I wanted to start a thread analyzing street fight videos utilizing BJJ and things that were done well, and not so well. I would also like to say, that I do NOT advocate street fighting in anyway. Martial arts should ONLY be used in self-defense, and even so, should not be used at all if the fight is completely avoidable; and let’s face it, most street fights (99%) are indeed avoidable.

At the beginning, the smaller opponent pushes, and then gets clocked. That is a mistake, he should have set up his takedown from the beginning, but let’s face it, he looks like he’s 10. Take down was well executed, and then the opponent tried to head-lock him, he used the classic Gracie headlock defense, decent mount retention considering the flailing desperate arms pushing him up, tried for the arm bar, couldn’t hold the mount and executed a nice back take with hooks for the full choke out :)

This one is a classic. This is BJJ black belt, instead of escalating the violence, the BJJ practitioner used the opportunity to educate after the threat is neutralized. I like this, but one must take caution in a defenseless reckless opponent who will do or say anything to get up, and then go for a cheap shot.

This occurred when a basketball game got heated, man in green is a BJJ purple belt. He was ready for the punch, although I think he should have managed space a bit better. Took the back, went for an arm bar, but peers were getting involved. In many similar scenarios he would have just gotten jumped. I don’t think the aggressor realized the danger at all from the heel hook, so no lessons were learned here.

Done striking martial arts for all my life, and just started doing BJJ a couple of months ago at the same time my 5yo is in the BJJkids class.
Videos like that are the main reason behind my decision and my "change" towards BJJ (and other grappling arts).
You do need to know how to manage someone striking you, but once you get the essentials there is nothing better than managing the situation, getting everything under control, reducing risks and letting the other person know that you're in control until the cops come.
Thanks for the videos.

Pure machismo and egos here, I don’t like this one: This is street altercation between a young man, and a middle aged man, considerable size difference, and you will see why that will matter in this fight. The kid knows jiu-jitsu, and unfortunately seems be also be the instigator. He throws the first punch, gets the hooks in, but then the man immediately tries to back slam him. Couple flailing punches later, man gets to his knees (size difference), and then REALLY implements that slam, which in many circumstances this would be over, and a serious head injury would have occurred. The lesson: abandon the back and hooks and re-ground the opponent. THERE ARE NO MATS. Good thing the kid tucked his head. Man gets RNC’d taps, but kid chokes him out followed by some very disrespectful shots to an unconscious opponent. Nasty stuff.

This one is a clean choke out, but I have questions: First off, I don’t know why the guy is standing behind the car provoking two guys. Number one, there could be a weapon in the car, two, he could have gotten jumped (third bystander enters), and three, he clearly walked over to instigate, so not self-defense. The rest is pretty straight forward, and he’s lucky he didn’t get soccer kicked or stomped. His environmental awareness is very poor.

Video starts with kid in side control, managing head lock threat while throwing weak hammer fists. Guy “gives up”, kids helps him up, they shake hands and then BAM! Takes a hard straight sucker punch to the nose. Hard lesson to learn. It’s a street fight, keep your distance, do not trust a stranger in being honorable.
