Was just going through the voting list to looking to vote for some profiles. I could not believe how many profiles are being disputed for not being complete.

For me it’s this simple. If I want to use Belt Checker then I need to put the time into it or why waste my and everyone else’s time. Why start it and don’t add photos and all that to show others my lineage and that I am what I am. If it don’t matter to you this isn’t for you. If my profile isn’t to par please tell me I’ll make the adjustments. I won’t vote if you don’t have photos. It’s that simple.
If you think it’s just for people to say your a this belt or that your missing opportunities. I’ve met some fantastic folks here. Enjoy.

I think the easiest solution is that after one week has passed since the profile was created an option appears to declare the profile as an Incomplete profile instead of Disputed.

The entire disputed thing is getting watered down. Just have an option to say the profile is Incomplete and once the profile is updated the incomplete will be removed automatically. And if it's still incomplete then someone can either mark it as incomplete again or dispute it after that point.

Some people may not care if others recognise their rank. This site can be used in many different ways. Some people don't use other social media. For others it's a pretty good and free training log.

This is a project that a man created because he was bored. You all take this WAY too seriously. Makes me laugh.
Is jiu-jitsu about the fine details, that makes a technique work, or a lack of details in the technique that makes it fail?

It already works like this. People can only verify/dispute a profile once it has ID verification and full promotion history. So incomplete profiles are already disabled from being voted on.

In the cases in point, someone have been activating their profile, verifying their ID and filling out their promotion history, but still doesn't take the time to actually provide evidence for the rank they claim to hold. Verified users are of course free to verify or dispute this as they please.

Not entirely because of boredom; I wanted to create a very real alternative to the establishment for rank verification. People are free to take this as seriously or non-seriously as they want - each to their own 🙂

I get it.

But it's a bit like the cry wolf story. There are so many profiles that are "disputed" that when someone sees disputed they don't think anything about it. They just assume it's another incomplete profile that someone did not finish properly.

Might be more work but maybe some Yellow bar instead of a Red bar highlighting incomplete profiles or some option that basically means more information is requested. The person is not being disputed they are just being asked for more information in a nicer way, letting people know that they never completed their profile.

As is basically when a profile is legit disputed people have to make a forum topic about it for anyone to really notice.

As is the only person really benefiting from this system atm is Johan.

Not really. I too have for a long time requested a nicer-than-dispute down-vote for e.g. lack of evidence. Which I too would "benefit" from.

I've also suggested that needing-votes-profiles be moved to an archive after e.g. three months without being verified, so they don't steal attention from needing-votes-profiles from people who actually put in the work.

How hard would it be to make that change?

I didn't intend this post as a bitch session, it was intended as an observation that it seems there are more disputed profiles for being incomplete (for verification purposes) than fully filed out profiles that can be verified easily. I do agree with Johan though, as myself and a few others were the early people that disputed profiles that were not completed.
Maybe a change could be made to profile setup in the belt history were it can't saved unless there is a picture added to the belt.
I know some of these requests are extremely hard to implement, I used to maintain website years ago and know somethings just can't be done. Christian is doing an amazing job maintaining and building a great platform for the jiu-jitsu community.

Way more complicated than you think, actually 😄 We've already had this debate a few times before and I once wrote a more thorough response on why the logic of it is more complicated than worth it for me to implement. If I wasn't so busy, I would go look for it and paste it in here 😄

Harsh.
My jiu jitsu journey is pretty well documented but I trained judo 6 days per week for 4 years in the 90s and I haven't got a single photo to prove it. I can bet loads of people who become black belts way before the smart phones were a thing , are gonna have a hard time finding photos from the mat.
I also have a black belt friend and my former teammate who resigned from all of his social media for his mental health and he was able to get a verification on beltcheker based on his team confirming his rank.

I have photos that goes back to my karate days from the late 1970's
If I didn't ask friends if they did. Trust me I know it's hard. Those were days before most had cameras. To me there's always a way to get pictures and documentation.

But why would someone go through so much hassle just for the sake of some website?
Getting approval by people you trained with should be (and is) as valid as doing it by providing photo evidence to get approved by strangers.

Yes, why don't they just join some BJJ website without the ambition to verify belts? Or make their profile on Beltchecker unvoteable, as is easily fixed? Why go through with any hassle when you already know you don't have actual evidence? Sure you can "get approval" from people you train with, but if e.g. James Nakamura (fake Carlson Gracie BB) had joined Beltchecker and his students and training partners had verified him, without themselves really having checked any evidence (as it never existed, because it never happened), would it be a good thing that his Carlson Gracie BB was verified by Beltchecker?

Odds are...something like this has probably already happened at least once.

Hope this doesn't keep you awake at night.

And if it somehow hasn't happened yet, you are just the man to go through every single profile and confirm that it hasn't.

Is it possible to code a mechanism that deletes incomplete profiles after a period of time, like say a month. A month is plenty of time to fill out a profile properly. And if a profile is still incomplete after a month it gets deleted. If the person wants to try again hopefully they have all the photos and dates and other info they need before attempting to create a profile for a second time. Having a mechanism that deletes incomplete profiles would eliminate the website from being littered with profiles that are incomplete and not worth anyone looking at.

I remember we had this conversation before.

But if you find the time to add that yellow bar, please make sure those colours are in the same order as in traffic lights. My ocd demands it...🚦🤣

That would start with the questions of 1) what's the definition of an "incomplete" profile and 2) why are they a problem.

Not sure why there is a 10th degree red belt section. i'm pretty sure you got to be a dead to have that belt and even then, I thinks its pretty difficult for a dead person to fill out there profile. What's even funnier is that it has entries in there!!

This is some of silliest shit, I have ever seen.
The entire concept of belt ranks is not only a silly social construct,
It is entirely contrary to knowledge transfer, and acquisition.
If the blue belt, or the white belt, is doing something the best,
Make them the teacher for a day, or days, or months, or years.
The irony that I am the one saying, "Jante's Law".
