https://www.instagram.com[...]mg_index=1 What do you think about it ? Is it a legit black belt for you ?
It says that it make history, i agree with the main idea behind but the instructor seems to be a first degree Black belt, so it will not be legit... if the idea is to make history it should be doing right, no ?

Yasmin is only 1st degree but her husband Mohammed Doty is a 2nd degree under Fabrcio Moreira. Even though he may not be training directly with the girl who was just promoted because of his religion, he could easily sign off this promotion. If he puts his reputation on the line and trusts one of his black belts and his wife to make this judgement, then it's perfectly fine in my book. Similar situations happened in jiu jitsu history more often than we would like to admit. Taking into account geographical and cultural implications, I would give it a pass in this case. They are an inspirational family and do a lot of good for jiu jitsu, islam and their local community in Quatar. As much as I love a good old witch hunt, they don't deserve one.

Either you're "promoted by" or you're not. If she was promoted by (legit I assume, but haven't checked) 2:nd degree BB Mohammed Doty and he for real has followed her training with his own eyes (whether she's totally covered up or not, as long as he knows it's her) , that would be totally fine by me. But post says "my first black belt" (not Mohammed's) and there's no indication that anyone other than 1:st degree Yasmin was promoting instructor.

Should be easily fixed with just adjusting the claims who was the (senior) promoting instructor though and fixing some evidence of that. Even if Mohammed has just seen her train for a couple of hours and the rest is trusting Yasmin, he would have still have made a personal judgment.

It's really similar to the pioneering years when Brazilian instructors came to Europe in the 90:s and early 00:s and promoted our students mostly based on our recommendations, together with using their own eyes for the duration of a seminar. Obviously not everyone promoted went to live in Brazil for months. As Pete writes though, trusting puts your own reputation on the line. If Mohammed's own (short?) checks (if that's what the story is, not just Yasmin promoting herself) weren't enough and we hear about some woman we know and trust rolling with this new BB and saying she's really far from BB standards, that would put into question other BB:s promoted by Mohammed as well.

Anyways, Yasmin will soon be a 2:nd degree BB herself and then it's her reputation that's on the line. I sure hope all 2:nd degree BB:s keep up standards on who they promote, but I really don't think I've ever down voted anyone based on their legit promoting instructor throwing around undeserved BB:s. And I've really never heard of anything indicating that Mohammed's BB:s would be less than BB:s (I've never heard of him at all before).

I'm personally not fond of religion imposing different rules on men and women, but that's another discussion and in a culture which won't change anytime soon, it's still great that women too get to do combat sports. So as long as they get the formalities in order, you go girls!
