If it's not a 3x Olympian winning the women's division, it's a guy with 21 years experience of combats sports including professional MMA and D1 wrestling.
The blue belt division is the absolute worst.
I don't care if it fits within the IBJJF rules, the rules are wrong.

It happens, now he will break purple belt. Tournaments have a luck of the draw aspect also.

You might not like it but a black belt in TKD is not a blackbelt in Karate or Muay Thai. So being a D1 does not make you blackbelt in BJJ. Can it fast track you sure.
Massive congrats to him, well done and welcome to BJJ.

They should be competing at black belt. Back in the day, when John Olav Eninemo won ADCC and even beat Roger Gracie ... I think he was a blue belt at the time. Imagine if he was forced to compete against blue belts.

They should just have beginner, intermediate and advanced.
IBJJF will never do it...but almost all other organizations already do this for NoGi. And in that scenario, he would of been in the advanced division.

He's not just a D1 wrestler, he's been training MMA for >6 years and has professional wins via submission. He also has a win on CJI ffs

Right, he literally beat a 1st degree black belt on CJI

Are you upset that he competed at the blue belt or that he's a purple now and my come and beat you? He also didn't win. He got disqualified for being a dick after putting his opponent to sleep.

I personally think this particular part of BJJ is a bit wonky. What everyone seems to forget here is that BJJ is the oddball in this respect. Most combat sports DON'T separate according to rank, if they have ranks at all. There's no blue belt division in wrestling and (at least in Germany) Judo doesn't separate according to rank in tournaments either, you just have to have passed the second belt test.
BJJ is already giving people an advantage by bothering to separate tournaments by rank, where does that end? Is someone who competed at Euros and did well but didn't medal now not allowed to compete in local tournaments? Are worlds brown belt competitors not allowed to fight Europeans?
Sandbagging is fake. You only hear it when people are angry they lost.

Sandbagging most certainly is not fake.
Judo does seperate by rank, they just group some belts together. Wrestling has divisions.
I'll also add that BJJ is an order of magnitude better at getting amateur adults to compete than both those sports. It's true that a lot of combat sports don't seperate by rank and it's also true that they are dying because of it. Judo is largely a kids sport with 85% of participants under 18.

First of all, regarding Judo, this has not been my experience. Admittedly, this might be specific to Germany and could be different in the UK.
And yes, wrestling has divisions, but this is based on that you won tournaments in wrestling. If you have a Judo or BJJ black belt, you still have to start at the beginning of the wrestling divisions and work your way up.
This idea that being a wrestler or a Judo black belt means you should start in higher divisions is unique to Jiu-Jitsu.
And while I agree that BJJ does better at engaging amature athletes, it's also true this is mostly due to the availability of Jiu-Jitsu above pretty much everything else. It's also true that when you're going for world's, then you're not really in the amature level anymore. Also, having a world champion for each belt level is again kind of unique for us. There's no Judo yellow belt world championship. It's just the Judo world championship.

Judo separates by rank groups in most local and regional competitions. That is certainly the case in the USA. Generally it's Black belts, 1-3 kyu and higher kyus, although some competitions only have 2 belt divisions. Major international competitions are a different matter, but one doesn't expect low level inexperienced competitors to be competing in those.

Well that I agree with and I honestly think a white or blue belt "world champion" is absolutely cringe. White and blue are beginner belts, a beginner world champion is a contradiction in terms. I've won a British Championship "novice" division, I'd never describe that as a British title.
I think Judo has too many damn belts and I think the BJJ 5 is a big part of why the sport has taken off so well. It's also why I take such a negative view of the topic at hand.

In a sense, though, BJJ has more belts than judo if one considers the stripes. In my curriculum, I only do white, yellow, orange, green, brown, black, so that's only one more than BJJ, and there aren't any stripes involved, but I believe in Europe that the 3 ranks of brown belt are divided by color (blue, purple, brown). I think beginners like to see a visible sign of improvement. But by the time they reach brown belt, the actual internalized progress has finally become more important than the external accessories.
