Don't threaten me with a good time! I'd be the first to dance around the dojo singing "Like a Prayer" for the trial class dudes lol

I don't even know what's on at our gym half the time. Enya or Enigma or something probably. On the nights I get to play guest DJ it's 80's metal. Metallica, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, etc.

I find music during training to be very distracting. It seems like a relatively new phenomenon to have music playing while lessons are going on. And I've run into the problem of people not being able to hear verbal taps when there's loud music, so it can actually be dangerous. I turn the music to extremely low volume or preferably off completely when I am teaching. I am sort of curious as to when it became standard to have music playing during rolls. My instinct says it started to happen at the same time UFC was becoming a popular event on television, but certainly the thought of playing music while training or rolling was unheard of when I was coming up through the ranks.

I agree with you 100%. It's a distraction to learning. Imagine sitting in any classroom setting and blaring music while teaching....who does that? And while rolling if your hyper focused on the roll (as you should be) you generally won't even hear the music, it's just background noise. Also, you mentioned verbal taps, i haven't encountered a gym that plays music so loud that it would muffle a verbal tap, however i still find it pointless. When I came up through the ranks, we never played music.
Perhaps from a business perspective some light music could be played before class on a low setting by the front desk (if your gym has one) to present a more welcoming and inviting atmosphere, but during an actual class has never made any sense to me. Seems counterintuitive as every time the instructor starts talking, the "DJ" has to run to grab his phone and turn down the music. I don't get it personally.

I forgot to mention, the awkward moment when the purple belt "DJ" has to sprint off the mat to grab his phone to stop the music because a song pops up with extreme profanity. Just as the kids' class is rolling in. I've seen that one before lol.

It's worse than that in our gym. The head instructor is partially deaf, but he loves rap; and the swear words, misogyny, racist language, and N word are constant, regardless of whether or not there are children in the class. Plus it's like a loud conversation constantly going on in the background. When it's not rap, it's pop radio which is constantly interrupted by load ads shouting over the speakers. It's gotten a little better of late, perhaps due to complaints from some of the parents, but whenever I get there, the first thing I have to do is turn down the volume.

We play music, but only a couple people run the music from the phones, and explicit language is turned off on Spotify (it's a handy feature) and we only play music at a reasonable volume during sparring not blasting. But I can certainly understand and empathize where some folks wouldn't want music and just silence.
We haven't had anyone ask to turn the music off but certainly would if asked.
As for music played, I usually like metal and 80's/90's hard rock, but rap/hip hop can be good, and if we are doing a lot of flow rolling etc, I put on Pink Floyd or reggae for a more chill vibe.

I've seen some discussions about playing music during BJJ instruction. Personally, I've never been in a gym where music is playing during teaching sessions—it can be distracting for some. However, I find background noise helpful for concentration and learning in certain environments.
When it comes to live rolls, I honestly don't mind either way. I don't even hear or remember the music—it seems my mind tunes it out. So, feel free to play your jams and enjoy the rolls!

Sometimes our gym sounds like someone is playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater on a surround sound system. As an aging punk rocker I love those days.
Because we are up in the northwest corner of Connecticut there is a considerable amount of country music as well. I dont like that as much, but its ok.
For me, I need the background noise. Maybe its the ADHD I've had since childhood, but it actually helps me focus.

HA! I actually like them. The cliche of punching drywall does exist though and I'm sure we would have to heartily invest in joint compound and tape.

Ha! Yes!!
I think you and I have the same idea about acceptable music.
Punk rock and thrash metal make me happy.
I used to play in a horrorpunk band. When I had to pick music or jiu jitsu, I picked jiu jitsu.

If you like them, Motorgrater is far superior for the 1 album they did in my opinion, and if you want heavy but chill music, Ghost Machine was awesome as well.

I love Motograter!! Suffocate is such an underrated song.
Along that line, Mushroomhead has long been a favorite band of mine. Can't say the current version is still Mushroomhead, but it's still really good.
For heavy, but chill, I tend to lean towards GHOST. They get a lot of hate but I love them. I'm not familiar with the Ghost Machine I'll have to look them up

Yes. and Megaton, my wife says same thing, but she used to go to sleep listening to Slayer with me when we dated in our 20's, so I take anything she says about aggressive music with salt. :D

I guess I should count myself lucky that my wife will listed to Korn and Disturbed all day, but she draws a line at horror, hardcore punk, or thrash. She can tell when I've been driving the momwagon because she turns the key and Cannibal Corpse or something like that blasts her in the face and ears

My last band got to open for the Koffin Kats. They could not have been nicer or more supportive. Tiger army is such a great choice too.
I haven't heard much from The Creepshow. I'll look them up today. Now I have something to look forward to! Thank you!!
If you aren't familiar, I suggest looking up Blitzkid, Mister Monster, Savage Remains, The Casket Creatures, Shadow Windhawk, or the Rosedales.
I could go on and on. Literally all day lol
