Inconsistency in verification requirements for black belt promotions

I've been reading through the FAQ and I think I've found a significant loophole in your verification policy, and I'd like the community's input on this.
According to your system:
If I'm promoted by an instructor as a black belt to my next degree, my profile needs reverification
If I self-update my black belt degree based on time served, no reverification is required
Only colored belt degrees require reverification
So the question is: once someone is initially verified as a black belt, can they update their degree indefinitely based on time served? And if so, what happens when they reach the top of the black belt degrees—can they then move to coral belt or red belt without verification?
This creates a scenario where someone could theoretically work their way up through higher degrees and into coral/red belts with only the initial black belt verification, never needing to verify higher ranks after that.
Your stated mission is to validate ranks from legitimate lineage. But this system seems to allow self-promotion through degrees without ongoing verification.
Can the Belt Checker team clarify: Is there a verification requirement when moving between belts (black to coral, coral to red), or does the initial black belt certification cover you indefinitely?

Can the Belt Checker team clarify: Is there a verification requirement when moving between belts (black to coral, coral to red), or does the initial black belt certification cover you indefinitely?
Since this is a decentralized, community-based program, I'll go ahead and consider myself part of the "team" and answer your questions from my point of view:
1) once someone is initially verified as a black belt, can they update their degree indefinitely based on time served?
- Yes.
2) And if so, what happens when they reach the top of the black belt degrees—can they then move to coral belt or red belt without verification?
- Yes, why not? Coral belt is just a fancy black belt, imo, and progression to attaining it is strictly time-based.
3) Is there a verification requirement when moving between belts (black to coral, coral to red), or does the initial black belt certification cover you indefinitely?
- I suppose I just answered this on #2, but, yes, progressing from regular black belt to fancy black belt follows the same, time-based protocol. Kind of like little kids' belts.
FWIW, I can do the exact same thing in IBJJF, SJJIF, etc. if I pay them enough money and jump through all the hoops. Here it's free.
If you don't agree with it, you are more than welcome to downvote anybody's profile based on any beliefs you have about how ranking should be. I'm not sure if anyone on here has progressed to coral belt via "time served" here on beltchecker, but you could totally go and downvote that person if you don't think they should be doing that.

Bobby answered it perfectly. Black belt degrees are purely based on time served and this platform can verify better than anyone/anything else exactly how long you've been a black belt. So that's by design, not a loophole.
In case you're being promoted to X black belt by someone, it must be community verified to ensure that the information about the promoting instructor, date and location is correct.

Thank you for the thoughtful responses, Bobby and Christian—I appreciate the transparency and the decentralized spirit of BeltChecker. It's clear a lot of care goes into building a community-driven tool like this, and the free access is a huge plus compared to the fees at orgs like IBJJF or SJJIF.
That said, I respectfully disagree on framing black belt degrees (and especially progression to coral/red belts) as purely time-based in a way that allows indefinite self-updates without reverification.
If I get promoted legitimately by my 5th-degree instructor—with photos, a signed certificate, and public acknowledgment—I still have to go through full community reverification on BeltChecker. But if I just click your "upgrade" button after enough time has passed, I'm all good to go, no questions asked. That double standard undermines the very legitimacy you're trying to protect.
While time served is a foundational requirement under IBJJF rules, their system explicitly requires more: an application process with instructor endorsement from a certified 2nd-degree (or higher) black belt in good standing, plus documented "proven activity" (e.g., teaching, competing, or academy involvement). Lineage traceability is baked in to ensure the promotion chain holds up—it's not just a timer ticking away.
Self-updating skips that oversight entirely, which could erode the trust you're aiming to build.
For coral and red belts specifically, these aren't "fancy black belts" in the same casual sense; they're reserved honors (7th–10th degrees) that IBJJF treats with even stricter scrutiny due to their rarity and historical significance. The Gracie family and core pioneers hold most of them, and promotions there demand not just decades of time but verifiable contributions to the art.
Allowing unchecked self-progression to these levels risks turning BeltChecker into a vector for the exact McDojo scenarios we're all trying to avoid—think self-proclaimed "masters" inflating ranks without external validation, à la Master Ken or those viral "10th dan" memes.
I'm all for downvoting as a community check, but that's reactive and subjective; it puts the onus on vigilant users rather than proactive safeguards.
Why not evolve the policy to require reverification (e.g., instructor-signed docs or community consensus) for every 2–3 degrees or when crossing into coral/red territory? That keeps the low-friction time-based updates for standard black belt stripes while protecting the higher echelons. It aligns better with your mission of validating legitimate lineage without the full IBJJF hoop-jumping.
Curious about your take— I'd love to hear more on balancing accessibility with integrity. Keep up the great work!

IBJJF will promote your black belt degrees purely based on time served. As long as you are a member of their organization, they will upgrade your rank every X years you've paid with no other requirements what so ever. They've confirmed that with me by email, but perhaps they changed it in the last few years?
I am not sure I have more arguments than what have already been laid out. If enough people disagree with promotions based on time only, they can use their voting power to make those impossible. Start a movement and see if you can get more people on board with it, by all means! That's what the platform was built for; to have those debates and find out what the general consensus on promotion standards is.
That's an awful lot of em-dashes btw, I might downvote your profile for actually just being a robot posting in the forum 😂

Here are the options for "staying active" in the IBJJF according to their most recent edition of the IBJJF Graduation System (article 4.2):
"The year(s) an athlete completes any of the activities listed below will be counted towards the degree certification.
1) Active membership: Maintaining active membership through the year(s).
2) Academy registration under IBJJF: listed as a Head Professor or Additional Professor.
3) Approving students: Professors who regularly approve athletes’ membership requests under IBJJF through the year(s).
4) Black Belt/Degree Certification previously granted by IBJJF.
5) Titles won by the athlete in an IBJJF championship
6) IBJJF Referee Training Program Certificate and Rules Course Certificate, both granted by IBJJF.
7) As long as the applicant is recognized by the IBJJF as an athlete or teacher of significant importance in the development of
Jiu-Jitsu, or if they have made substantial contributions to the legacy of the sport during their career.
The year(s) an athlete does not complete any of the activities listed in Article 4.2.1 will not be counted towards the degree
certification."
You'll notice that all of these options involve the IBJJF getting paid for something.
To contrast beltchecker.com with the IBJJF, the IBJJF is basically saying, "you must have the minimum time in grade, and you must pay us", whereas those of us on betchecker.com are saying, "you must have the minimum time in grade".
I think it's hard to argue that the IBJJF somehow has higher standards when, according to article 4.2.1(i) of their rulebook, you can continue to "stay active" simply by keeping your membership current with their organization. You can literally just sit on your ass and do nothing, teach nothing to anybody or even interact with another human being so long as you keep your membership active on the computer.
If you keep doing this for the requisite amount of time, you can attain coral belt and even red belt.

On the IBJJF website there are 57 seventh degree athletes listed. Renzo and Royce Gracie are NOT listed on there. Most people outside of Brazil train BJJ because of Royce Gracie whether directly or indirectly. And Renzo Gracie is probably more responsible for the current top American No-Gi players than anyone else.
There are 33 eighth degree black belts listed. Rigan Machado is NOT listed. Rigan Machado is a LEGEND of the sport.
9th degree has 22 people listed and Rorion Gracie is not listed there. Without Rorion Gracie there is no UFC. Without the UFC there is no worldwide attention on BJJ.
The IBJJF isn't that concerned with identifying who was important to the growth of BJJ if it doesn't match up with their politics. Crowd sourcing for verification has it's problems, of course. But it should, in theory, overcome the types of problems that occur when you have a smaller pool of people validating.

This is the key. You pay your money long enough and they will recognize you as anything you want. It wouldn't surprise me if this is why they continue to list minimum time in grade for promotion. The longer it takes you to promote the more money they get paid to acknowledge that promotion.

I'm pretty sure all these guys could get certified fairly easily under article 4.2 (#7). They'd still have to pay up though. Also worth noting that all these guys are Helio guys, with the exception of Rigan. That might have something to do with it as well. But, just like beltchecker, you have to set up a profile and all that, or else you're not going to be listed.

Christian, Bobby, everyone,
I need to clarify my concern, because the FAQ and your responses don't align.
Let me quote the very first thing I wrote in this thread (which nobody has actually disputed):
• If I am promoted by my instructor to my next degree: My profile needs full community reverification.
• If I self-update (by clicking a button) my degree based on time served: No reverification is required.
Your FAQ explicitly states: "The system allows certification of degrees for verified black belts once due time is served and as long as the community agrees by voting to approve it."
It also lists four requirements for black belt degree certification:
• Time served as black belt
• Full ID and photo verification
• Full promotion history
• Enough votes from verified community to confirm your profile and promotion history is trustworthy (1000 points required)
But your responses in this thread state:
• Bobby: "Yes" to indefinite self-updates based on time served
• Christian: "Black belt degrees are purely based on time served... So that's by design, not a loophole."
Here's the problem: A self-timed self-upgrade adds a brand-new line to the promotion history that has never had a single piece of evidence uploaded and has never received a single community vote.
That means the moment anyone uses the timer button, the profile instantly and permanently violates two of the four bullet points you yourselves wrote as mandatory:
1. No evidence in the "full promotion history" for that degree
2. Zero community votes confirming that promotion is trustworthy
So which is it?
Option 1: Does the community need to actively vote to approve each time-based degree update (as the FAQ states)?
Option 2: Do time-based degree updates happen automatically without community voting once you're initially verified as a black belt (as your responses suggest)?
If it's Option 1, then I misunderstood the system and I apologize - problem solved.
If it's Option 2, then the FAQ is misleading, and the only way to make the site obey its own rules is to require the same evidence + community vote for every degree increase, no exceptions, no special "timer bypass."
Can you confirm which interpretation is correct?
Respect and thanks for the work you do,
Dalan

Option 2 is correct. You are just reading the FAQ "wrong": It doesn't say "For that degree" or "for that promotion". Time based promotion just requires your promotion history + active community verification + time served.
We could maybe reword the FAQ so it's even more clear, but I'm honestly not sure that's totally necessary here 🤷🏼♂️

I wouldn't consider them "self-updates", but rather "community updates", based on community standards. If community standards change at any point, I will have to comply.

Christian, Bobby,
Thank you for the clarification.
So, to confirm: Once a user is initially verified as a Black Belt, the platform assumes indefinite trustworthiness. No new evidence, no instructor signature, and no new community votes are required for any future degrees—including Coral and Red Belt. It is simply the passage of time and a button click.
I accept that this is the platform's deliberate stance, but I want to leave you with a final thought on why this logic is tragic for the art.
The "Coma" Test - Bobby, calling this a "community update" is excellent branding, but let’s be honest: it is a database script. I am a SQL programmer; I could write that timer logic in under a minute. Under this system, a verified Black Belt could fall into a coma tomorrow, retain only the ability to click a mouse, and wake up in 30 years to find BeltChecker has dutifully promoted him/her to Red Belt while on life support.
That isn't a "community standard." That is an automated participation trophy.
The Reality vs. The Script - Contrast that with reality. Just recently, Australian pioneer John Will (a Dirty Dozen member and student of Rigan Machado) was promoted to Coral Belt. If you check the photos on social media, he is beaming with pride. Why? Because that rank was personally bestowed upon him by his mentor in a room full of peers, recognizing a lifetime of dedication. It was a shared moment of history.
Compare that to the "BeltChecker method": A silent database update at midnight because a counter hit zero. One honors the soul of the martial art; the other is a scheduled cron job.
Disruption vs. Dilution - I understand your mission here is to disrupt the IBJJF. I have never been a member and never will be. But in your rush to dismantle their bureaucracy, you have swung so far in the other direction that you have removed the soul of the process.
By all means, disrupt the IBJJF - but don't take down the legitimacy of BJJ in the process. Don't kill the tradition and pride of our sport for the sake of a SQL script.
Even the "corrupt" IBJJF requires a human signature and proof of activity for degrees. You now require less than they do. You haven't fixed the system; you've simply gamified it.
No legitimate martial art on the planet allows for self-promotion via timer. Rank has always been something a senior judges you ready for and bestows. When rank becomes something you claim via a button rather than something earned from a mentor, we aren't "checking" belts anymore. Perhaps a name change to "BeltClickers.com" is appropriate.
It saddens me because this platform had such potential to be the gold standard. Instead, by automating high-level ranks, you are accidentally building the very "McDojo" factory you set out to destroy.
I’ll rest my case there. Thanks for the debate, it has been valuable.
Respect,
Dalan

Instead, by automating high-level ranks, you are accidentally building the very "McDojo" factory you set out to destroy. I’ll rest my case there. Thanks for the debate, it has been valuable.
Absolutely not. Even my standards aren't that low. He'd clearly have to do it for 48 years after his original black belt promotion to get approved, not 30 :).
Again, as I discussed before, the only way you have to "prove activity", according to the IBJJF is to make sure they're getting paid, so I guess technically it's more work/bureaucracy, but not by much. I also should make it clear that I'm not trying to disrupt the IBJJF, but rather to support a not-for-profit alternative that has higher and more transparent standards.
I also appreciate this debate/dialogue. I think it's important for us to be having, especially at this juncture in our development as a martial art/sport. It seems like you have some strong feelings that our advancements in rank should include more than just surviving. I think it would be a shame for you just to drop this conversation rather than actively campaign for what you believe SHOULD be the community standard. You're just as much a part of the community as I am.
Personally, I agree with you in that I feel that more should go into achieving rank beyond BB than simply staying alive, but I'm also OK with it just being what it is: a time stamp. Regardless, we need to have some sort of uniform standard so that BJJ continues to maintain its integrity as the number of practitioners grows and the landscape changes over time.
From what I can tell, just by rereading our exchanges, and maybe I'm wrong, it seems that your criteria would be:
1) rank is bestowed upon you by your mentor/senior
2) on beltchecker, the community should be able to vote for the legitimacy of the time-based degrees
Would you add to or otherwise amend those criteria?
One course of action you could take would be to downvote everyone who's accepted a time-based promotion. That would definitely get you some attention, and I'd bet that you would have some support for your ideals as well.
It might help to have a well-thought-out alternative prepared, in which case you would have to answer the question of what happens if your mentor passes away or you have a falling out with them? What happens if you don't want/can't afford to pay for your mentor to come out and promote you? Specifically what qualifications should your mentor have?
I think, according to your criteria, there's no chance to advance in rank unless you are paying someone, which is maybe OK with you?
In any case, I 100% support your efforts to be an active part of this community!

self-promotion is how every martial art starts.
Let’s not forget that the entire BJJ belt system, including these very honorable, pride-filling black belt degrees and coral/red/gold-and-silver-striped ones, is literally just invented out of thin blue air by some Brazilian cousins.
I’ve always found it incredibly fascinating that regular humans, like you and me, who also needs to stand in line in the supermarket and clean their toilets, are capable of inventing something completely out of nothing, that other humans will decide is so real that they’ll dedicate their entire lives and identities to achieving it; even missing out on spending time with their kids and what not, in the process.
But that’s another philosophical debate that should maybe be in another thread. Merry Christmas! 🎄

Aren't coral and red belts just individual belts on this site or something you can claim after certain amount of stripes earned as "time served"?
I thought those are individual belts and you need to get them verified just like a blue belt.

Christian, Bobby, Thank you for the clarification. I believe this to be a systemic problem within BJJ rather than a BeltChecker problem. Perhaps we should adopt more complex promotion requirements like Judo.

Christian, Bobby,
I appreciate the willingness to engage. Christian, I’ll start with the philosophical point, and then Bobby, I will answer your direct question about "orphans" with a concrete solution.
To Christian: The "Thin Air" Fallacy You wrote: "The entire BJJ belt system... is literally just invented out of thin blue air... regular humans are capable of inventing something completely out of nothing."
This is true. But money is also invented out of thin air. University degrees are invented out of thin air. Laws are invented out of thin air. However, civilization functions because we agree that I cannot print my own money and I cannot award myself a PhD.
The value of the "social construct" comes entirely from External Validation. By allowing self-promotion via timer, you are essentially letting users print their own currency because "time passed." That creates hyper-inflation of the rank.
To put a personal face on this: My father earned his black belt in Karate under Stan Schmidt (a JKA legend). Stan was a 7th Degree Black Belt who didn't get that rank by waiting for a database timer to click over. He had to travel to Japan, face the masters, and have it bestowed upon him.
That effort - that external judgment - is what gave the rank value. If he had just updated a website profile because "he survived another 5 years," it would have been meaningless. A database script running at midnight is just a scheduled task; a promotion is a shared moment of history.
To Bobby: The "Orphan" Dilemma (A Concrete Solution) You asked: "What happens if your mentor passes away or you have a falling out... Specifically what qualifications should your mentor have?"
This is the perfect use case for BeltChecker. You don't need a "Timer" to solve this; you need a "Ronin Protocol."
Here is the proposal that solves the "McDojo" risk AND the "Money/Politics" risk:
Scenario A: The Standard Path (Legit Lineage)
Trigger: Timer hits 3 years.
Action: User uploads a photo of their certificate/ceremony with their instructor.
Verification: Community sees it, verifies it.
Cost: $0. (Solves the "Pay to Play" issue).
Scenario B: The "Orphan/Ronin" Path (Instructor Died/Left)
Trigger: Timer hits 3 years, but the user has no instructor to sign off.
Action: User initiates a "Community Review." They post: "My instructor passed away. Here is what I have been doing for 3 years (seminars, teaching, competition footage, contribution to the art)."
Verification: The Community VOTES.
Result: If the community agrees you have done the work, THE COMMUNITY acts as the instructor and promotes you.
Why this fixes everything:
It kills the "Coma" Loop: No one gets promoted while on life support just because a timer finished.
It protects the "Orphan": You don't need a corrupt instructor; the community can save you.
It maintains standards: A human being (either an instructor or the crowd) still has to say "Yes."
Right now, your system assumes everyone is an orphan who needs a timer. I am proposing a system that respects lineage where it exists, and uses the power of the crowd where it doesn't.
Conclusion If we don't have this distinction, we aren't "checking" belts anymore. We are just "Belt Clickers."
I think that solves the dilemma without sacrificing the soul of the art.
Respectfully, Dalan

"The value of the "social construct" comes entirely from External Validation. By allowing self-promotion via timer, you are essentially letting users print their own currency because 'time passed.' That creates hyper-inflation of the rank."
I would disagree with this, as in either case, there would be the same amount of nth degree black/coral/red belts, just with more money going up to the top of the pyramid scheme, so this wouldn't be inflation, let alone "hyper-inflation".
To address your story about your father's Karate promotion, I would guess that Karate probably has a number of more-or-less standardized actions that must take place before one gets promoted to the next rank by someone else. BJJ doesn't really have that, and it's a different martial art than Karate, so in some ways it's an apples-to-oranges scenario.
I actually do like your solution to the current status quo of simple "time served" BB ranks here on beltchecker. I don't think it would take very much to allow the community to vote on whether or not someone should receive their next rank, although I would personally probably continue to vote on simple "time served" rankings unless something drastically changes within the greater BJJ culture.
It's probably worth pointing out again that you can go and downvote anyone who simply claims time served on here, if you don't agree with it.
In any case, if you start advocating more for your "Ronin protocol", I will back you up just as long as you stop referring to the current system as "my system", because I definitely didn't invent this shit lmao.
FWIW, I'm a certified IBJJF 1st degree BB, and I was promoted in person to 1st degree by my original promoting instructor with whom I maintain a good relationship to this day. I pay him nothing and honestly, I think the promotion is more meaningful to him than it is to me, otherwise I probably wouldn't care. I am also heavily involved in BJJ almost every day of my life since I own and run a gym, and this wouldn't change if my next degree depended on it or not. I just like BJJ. Ultimately, I choose to select my "time served" promotion on here since that's what it all boils down to if you take all the money and ceremonial nonsense out of the equation.
When my 2nd degree IBJJF promotion rolls around, maybe I'll claim to have been promoted by Carlinhos since he's the one who signed my certificate and see how people vote on that. I think it would be a good experiment.

Got to say I'm almost a bit disappointed I've still not seen any down votes on profiles with Beltchecker's automated time-served-stripes as last degree (or IBJJF:s money-for-automated time-served-stripes for that matter). Or any other consistent down votes based on objective criteria (ie not revenge votes) which doesn't result in a down vote from me as well.
On the brighter side, that indicates there's already somewhat of a consensus on what is definitively enough for a profiles' promotion history to be verified (a.k.a. "Make Jonah happy, make everybody happy!"?). Or at least what would quite quickly generate a verification but no down votes, even if some members still skip voting after belt checking the profile.

...or IBJJF:s money-for-automated time-served-stripes for that matter)...
In their defense, there is more that goes into getting a stripe than just paying: you must take and pass their rules course again, you must re-certify your cpr/1st aid and safesport, as well as pass another background check.
This is the criteria for US-based IBJJF certified BB's, anyway. It's probably worth noting that exactly what they're looking for in a background check seems to be some sort of secret.
Also worth noting that the types of information, and quality thereof, in a US background check is bound to be different than in other countries.
The other piece of the puzzle is that you have to prove that you're active, and I've already noted how they do that at ibjjf in a post above.
Interestingly, and pertinent to this conversation, is that since my 2 major surgeries last year, I've been "proving activity" not by competing, but by approving memberships. My membership itself (the other way of "proving activity") has lapsed, so I could presumably just sit around approving memberships for the next 2 years, nothing else, and as long as I have cpr, safesport, background check and rules course, on top of all the money, they will give me another really awesome diploma saying I'm a legit 2nd degree bb.

Some of us would rather leave toxic gyms, do our own thing, and not acquire a transactional relationship with someone we don’t know when we can do so with a federation.
Like Bobby, I have a club recognized by IBJJF, members registered and certified, plus all the hoop jumping I do. Why is this a tsk tsk behaviour, but paying some Brazilian to wear their patch, and promote students they don’t know is A-OK?….

I've been reading through the FAQ and I think I've found a significant loophole in your verification policy, and I'd like the community's input on this. According to your system: If I'm promoted by an instructor as a black belt to my next degree, my profile needs reverification If I self-update my black belt degree based on time served, no reverification is required Only colored belt degrees require reverification So the question is: once someone is initially verified as a black belt, can they update their degree indefinitely based on time served?
Bobby,
Fair play. I will stop calling it "your system." 🤝
To be clear: I don't care about the IBJJF. I care about legitimate promotion.
1. The "Friction" Factor My point about Stan Schmidt wasn't about standardized testing. It was about friction. He had to fly to Japan and face the masters. The rank had value because it was hard-fought. A SQL script running at midnight is the exact opposite of hard-fought.
2. My Personal Stance I am currently eligible for my 1st degree right now. I could click the button today. I won't. I will wait until my instructor—who I do not pay—decides I am ready and bestows it. That is the only way it carries weight.
3. The Solution: The Ronin Protocol Since you offered to back me, let's solve Patrick’s "Toxic Gym" issue without resorting to participation trophies.
The Proposal: We need a distinction on the profile for degrees:
Type A: Time Served (The Timer)
Type B: Community Verified (Evidence uploaded + Community Vote)
This allows "Ronins" (orphaned students) to be verified by the crowd, rather than just a clock.
How do we move this from a forum debate to a formal feature request?
Respect, Dalan

You could just add a time served stripe manually, if you still want community approval for it.
Or (I guess) attend a Globetrotters seminar and go through the Council of travelling black belts, if they are open to do degrees after black as well.
Or have good relations with a senior black belt who you train regularly with and you feel is worthy to tell you you're worthy after the time served.
