As a point of trivia, this has been done before, several times.
The first attempt that I recall that used the Interweb was bjj.org by Don Geddis, which he started to track and verify lineages of legitimate jiu-jitsu coaches regardless of affiliation back in the min-1990's through the early 2000's.
A few other independent website attempts have been made over the years.

I did look up some of the earlier attempts. I think we can do better this time ;)

Which, interestingly, if you use the way back machine, you can access the entire history of that independent BJJ rank verification website from its inception until it shut down at
http://bjj.org/a/ranks.html
So, a sample way back machine link for that website would be:
https://web.archive.org/w[...]ranks.html

I think the current experiment is interesting, and worthwhile to try again.
It is usually apathy and lack of funds after a number of years in operation that kills these things.
People get busy and move on, and stop maintaining them.
Or their wife gives them to do lists, etc.

That's why this site is built to be self-sustaining. My only job behind the scenes is to maintain and secure the code - the data will build itself through the community.

Wow that way back machine link is amazing, that's a very very ambitious task to keep such a manual list updated haha

Yeah, the maintainer founder of the bjj.org website site also maintained Rickson's and Ralph's websites, and numerous other hobbyist projects back then.

Hey! I recognize that old site! That thing was cool! LOL
Cyan text on a black background. Those were the days!
Yeah, I was manually updating that database. Then I had kids.
