Proofs and evidences, are what those not involved, must rely.
As, men and women murder, rape, assault, and steal from their neighbors,
And also bear false witness against them.

I wish it is not true but sounds really bad so far.
Does anybody actually get surprised when this stuff happens anymore?

I don't know 100% about this case, only what the internet says and i only can judge if he would be convicted and not only accused, although the allegations i read on the internet sound serious ... Independent of that specific situation, I feel very sorry for every victim of (sexual) violence, harassment or worse, independent of this specific case, especially in relation to Sports. It's always the (toxic) men, often in leadership roles (source of a german evaluation in relation to sexual violence and harassment in the context of sports; Rulofs, Bettina et al. (2022)).

94% of the offenders were men, only 3% were women....

81% happened in a Sports team/ Club (only 3% in Sports lessons in schools or universities). From Gymnastiks (17%), Judo (7%), swimming team (7%), soccer team (10%) to other sports( 49%)

81% of the sexual offenders were the Coaches/Trainers/ Instructors, 19% of the offenders were other members (or in professional sports people like team doctors)
It's really disgusting ! I can not understand how somebody can do this (especially as a father). Hope everyone of those convicted culprits get their deserved and just punishment! Working for more than a quarter century in Law Enforcement, i had to deal with lots of these kind of evil men .....disgusting

Interesting, there have been some recent posts on my Book of Face,
Where people like Jake Shields, and others besides, that I know personally,
Are now saying they don't want their wives and girlfriends grappling with other men.

Some of them seem to be taking a tone, that they would not allow it.

On the one hand, as both men and women can be inappropriately salacious,
Mixed sex type classes of heterosexuals, and same sex type homosexual classes,
Always have those potentials.

I tend to fall on the side, that the Dojo is not the Disco.
And it tends to annoy me, when people treat the Dojo, like a Disco.
Still, I know others that have found their spouse of years and decades on the mats.

On yet another hand, men who say they will "not allow" their female sig others to grapple with men,
Are laying down a boundary, to be in a relationship them, and that is legitimate.
So long as the female or counter party consents, can lay similar boundaries, and is free to leave.
Or vice-versa, for females that lay down similar boundaries to their male or female partners.

Otherwise, the wrong tone combined with the wrong diction, begins to sound like one party,
referring to the other as property, or chattel.
And that objectification, combined with a lack of good judgement, I suspect contributes systemically,
to the frequency of these events.
Meaning a disposition to see others, as objects, or possessions to be possessed, rather than as people.

As for me, as someone that used to investigate sexual predator cases, as a forensic investigator,
I do not know any professionals in that line of work that allow their kids to do sleep overs.
Nor that would ever allow their child to be alone with other adults,
Without rigorous checks and balances, such as multiple adults present,
Safety cameras running, etc, etc.

This universe, is full of monsters, that are quite real.
And even more, of humans who simply make bad choices.
Or that are apathetic, or selfishly disinterested.

I do not shame victims of predation, but I am in the business of helping people make themselves more difficult to be preyed upon.

Nope. The world is a pile of shit filled with piles of shit.
Man, I wish I could argue with you brother. I'm the first to admit that I'm not perfect, nobody is, and I've made my fair share of mistakes. I've been an awful person at times myself, but never with malicious intent. Its hard for me to pass judgement on others, as I wouldn't want judgement passed upon me, but there is a wide divide between human mistakes and predatory behavior.

As a father of a 14 year old daughter. There has been many times, I have had to tell my daughter, we don’t do sleep overs. “Oh Dad Everyone Does It. But you are not everyone.” It amazes myself when white belts come in and think they can use my academy as a meat market. Go to a bar and do that. Not in my academy. For every coach or professor that this comes out about, there are 100 or 1000 white belt men who make the training area a hostile environment. But if I do something about that, I will be told it is non-of my business what other students do on their own time.

This is what we're doing to make sure the chances of grooming, which is what I understand is being alleged at Atos, are at an absolute minimum at our gym:

1) It's woman-owned: my wife is 51% owner, and yes, I understand that women can abuse and contribute to abuse, but I think the chances are lower for a variety of reasons.

2) All our kids instructors undergo a thorough background check. No domestic violence and no creepy kid stuff, at minimum.

3) All adult/child interactions are recorded on gym cam, including doors to bathrooms; it's one big open space.

4) The head instructor is safesport certified... I'm pretty sure Galvao is too, so if the allegations are true, obviously I'm glad that it's not the only thing we have going for ourselves.

5) IMHO, most importantly, we don't have an idol-worshipping culture. It's very easy for nefarious behavior to go undetected/ignored if the gym culture is such that a potential perpetrator is somehow almost like a deity in everyone's eyes.

It's also worth mentioning that our gym is not nearly as big as Atos HQ, so there's less chance of anonymity. Also, as of yet, none of our underage competitors have needed to travel to a tournament without their parent(s) which is a bridge we'll cross when we get there.

Anybody doing anything aside/ in addition to this list? The only other measure I can think of that we're not doing is having something like a 3rd party hotline or person someone can talk to who is not myself, my wife or someone who is otherwise affiliated with our organization.

Not really an addition to the list, but an observation made about almost all of those actions. Nobody has a record until they get caught. Background checks are definitely worthwhile and are pretty low hanging fruit, but a predator that's good at what they do is very hard to catch and won't show up on a background check. Also, certifications are all good and well, but training isn't going to make a predator change their mind any more than not taking the training will turn someone into a predator. A pretty sound argument can be made that child protection training is a really good way for a predator to learn how to not get caught. Bottom line: no matter what you learn about someone through a background check or how well credentialed they are, it is in your best interests to maintain the same high level of vigilance with everyone in your gym.

Maybe. But predators are also looking for low-hanging fruit. They don't want a challenge. They don't want anybody to fight back. I think the more effective safeguards we have in place, the better.

Galvao has issued a statement:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
February 1st, 2026
Over the past few days, false rumors have circulated online alleging inappropriate conduct with female students. These claims are untrue and we are taking the proper legal steps to protect the integrity of ATOS.
I have dedicated my life to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and to building academies where people can train safely, confidently and with dignity. I’m proud of our culture: respect, discipline and professionalism—on and off the mats. Our mat space is surrounded by staff, students, cameras and we have always worked to maintain a safe, respectful and transparent training environment.
I will not engage in social media disputes, however, I will take the necessary measures to protect our community and my family’s name and I assure you that soon everything will come to light, especially the facts on why a few staff members left due to recent administrative and financial changes.
This all started by someone who recently left ATOS before this whole thing happened and this person isn’t even stated in the rumors but obviously has a personal vendetta due to financial cuts and administrative decisions. Which aches our hearts to see such devious ways by someone who has been benefited so much through the years and who should have at least the minimum amount of gratitude and respect for the team.
If you are a current student or parent and you have any concern or a question, I encourage you to reach out directly. We will take any genuine concern seriously and address it through the proper channels—not through vague accusations on social media.
To everyone that has supported our academy and our team: thank you. We will continue focusing on what matters—providing world-class instruction in a respectful environment and keeping our academy a place where all students can grow.
In the end I have faith that the truth will prevail. I stand alongside my family, Sarah and Angelica through all tribulations.
God bless you all.

Disgruntled parties sometimes do make false accusations.
Humans are liars.
That being said, humans also prey on each other in other ways, including sexual assault, and all the rest.
Galvao has said he is pursuing legal action.
There is a lower standard of proof for civil suits, than criminal guilt.
If for example, he pursues defamation claims.
But, if court actions of any kind are initiated, we can expect discovery to follow,
And, then everyone's texts, dm's, emails, about the matter, all can be ordered to be provided,
Directly from the devices, Teleco's, ISP's email account providers, and social media.
Both the accused, and the accusers, and other parties of interest to the matter.

So, vamos ver.

I read that as well.

Seems like all the accusations I've read have been in situations on the mat during sparring that probably can't be corroborated by anybody, or by video (i.e. ear licking, sexual noises, etc).

Hopefully the truth comes to light, one way or another.

Could be because Atos is aware of or suspects malfeasance on the part of the Galvao's, or simply a practical business decision.

Monetary conflicts of interest, cut both ways.

That certainly is a position they have taken, that is clear, though.

I don't mean to be pruriently curious, but one wonders what Galvao did, if he did something, because the stories about ear licking are just weird.

The mods are going to have to decide if this next comment is civil, or not.

It is not meant to be racist, it is meant as an observation of a cultural difference, and a difference in laws.

There are very different attitudes, and approaches to sex, and the laws around them, in Brazil, than the United States.

Very different.

Those practices, and outlooks, and cultural approaches, are not in alignment with some U.S. laws, nor also the approach to sex a large part of the U.S. has.

In fact, there is the old gag, that Americans will have machine gun murders on TV, but not naked breasts.

We had debates in the U.S. about whether breastfeeding in public is appropriate, which I find absolutely ridiculous - ( I think we are strange to think that breastfeeding is not natural, and in that way, innocent).

Topless beaches an nude beaches, exist in the U.S., but they are rare.

Likewise, we have the gag, that we Americans will be very careful where they go to the bathroom, and put their bottom but not careful about they put in their mouth, such as McDonalds junk food, and processed foods, etc.

There are also gags that America has a puritanical disposition, when it comes to sex, and there is some truth to this gag..

But, I don't think the American public, by and large, is aware of those differences, specific to some parts of Brazilian culture, compared to the U.S. cultures, until perhaps they experience them, and did not want to, nor mean to.

Brazilian culture 101, is not taught in our schools, and the fact most Americans only speak one language, tells you that most of them are myopic to their own culture, and often not aware of the mores and practices of other cultures.

I am NOT saying that this means Brazilians have a disposition to be rapists, compared to other cultures.

I am saying that I have observed, while in Brazil, and around Brazilians, that there are very different outlooks, and cultures about the domain, compared to say my own State of Florida.

Their laws and judicial processes are also different.

Including what is perceived as appropriate, or reasonable, including differences in social etiquette, expectations, and also their respective Laws.

And those differences, and ignorance of them, can increase the chances of sexual assault, because of misunderstanding, and misinterpretations.

Also, Brazil has a macho-macho culture, to boot.

The instructors from Brazil, especially the affiliations of largish size, but also even small dojos, tend to really indoctrinate their students from day one, "to be loyal" to the instructor, the school, and their team.

Indoctrinated cult loyalty is always what enables and what is invoked to drive cover ups of predation, by those in positions of power.

To the public, Caveat Emptor.

Based on these recent events, I have a new rule, and a new piece of advice, that I had not thought to advise my networks before today, but now I must do so:

1) No licking of other's ears in the Dojo.

2) If someone licks your ears, run out of there, trail of dust, and report it.

I had already covered other prohibited behaviors while grappling, so the sexual noises allegation, falls under that.

Hy William, I think it’s a problem of some males just being assholes.
I agree there might be cultural differences between some countries in how women are treated in general, especially in patriarchal societies.
But when properly educated there is simply the rule not to touch intentionally certain body parts , not to lick someone‘s ear, kiss, or other of that stuff, if it isn’t your significant other. There is absolutely no problem to roll with women as a man, if you don’t reduce a female training partner as a sex object…. Every well educated man should have himself under control. Especially as leader/ coach .
I heard about men in some gyms complaining about female training partners, wearing short tights and Rashguards would be too sexual provocative, when the guys instead train shirtless themselves. Or the guys feeling „distracted“ or some sexually provoked …. Stop acting like assholes and grow up!
Those guys I wouldn’t want to have on my mats….
We live in a democratic society, we have equality and I hate that „alpha“ men toxic masculinity in general and exploitation of their power, especially when in leadership roles.

Hy William, I think it’s a problem of some males just being assholes.
While this is certainly not false, it ignores the fact that women are often just as bad. We used to train with a woman that led the women's class and would constantly preach about how women shouldn't be objectified or have their bodies exploited. Then she would post pictures of herself on social media in a thong to attract reactions. She also made a habit of searching for things to be offended by and got a few men thrown out of the gym for doing nothing before getting kicked out herself for making false accusations. Sadly that is only one case of several I've seen. I'm not sure I would say I've seen more women than men act in a predatory manner, but it's a lot closer than most people want to admit.

I do not know what is happening in other countries, but I will tell you what I have seen in this one (the U.S.).

Since the law was changed to require female teacher sex abuse to children in schools to be reported and prosecuted the same as that done by males,

Everyday, we see daily new cases of females school teachers that sexually assault children in public schools , that are are children, widely documented.

To deny that is happening is naive at best, or a willful lie, willful denial, and therefore a part of serial willful cover ups, on the parts of those that take those positions, contrary to documented reality.

DOJ studies have documented that female prison guards are documented to do so in greater percentages than males, when both are prison guards, to the inmates, when the females are in positions of power.

And female juvenile inmates report being sexually assaulted by other female juvenile inmates in 7 times greater numbers that then juvenile male inmates report that happening - although maybe the males report less for various reasons.

That entire conversation begins to become as strange as the idea that women do not also cheat on their spouses as much as men, of course they do, or the men would have no one to cheat with.

Of course women, are just as salacious, often inappropriately, as men, this is obvious, and documented every day, by new sex abuse cases by female school teachers in public schools across the country.

So , those females

(and the males thinking they are being "allies" by taking unilateral positions that are not case specific with evidences specific to that case)

that deny the predations of female predators, are just as dangerous, as males who deny that males do it.

That increases predations, and gives predators cover.

So, in that case, why on Earth, should I find denials of the predations of the female sex type, less vile than those men who deny the predations of the male sex type?

I would be doing more harm to all the children that survived those terrible sex predations from adult females - that they were charged to protect as their school teachers, if I denied that reality.

And, those children, and survivors, have already suffered enough.

Male school teachers, and female school teachers do commit these predations.

As do males and females, in all roles where counter parties are vulnerable.

In situations where there are more males in authority positions, expect greater numbers of predations committed by males, and when those numbers of females in position in authority even out, you will see the ratio of predations being caught being done by males and females, even out, too.

It is the nature of predators, to need to select prey that is vulnerable, and the more vulnerable the predator is, the more they must select even more vulnerable prey, or rely on camouflage, and deception.

So I consider all who deny those predations or that cover them up, to be equally vile, especially to their victims, and survivors, who are often children, or other vulnerable parties.

It is the nature of these matters, for people to defend their favorite tribe, and claim all the problems originate from the other tribe, but we all know that is not so, that is merely propaganda, and societal biases.
