We just launched something we've been thinking about for a while: The Beltchecker Crowdsourced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Rule Book.

Instead of one (or many) organization deciding the rules for everyone, we let the BJJ community vote on them. Just like usual here on the platform, only verified profiles get to vote and your belt rank determines the weight of your vote.

- Which techniques should be allowed at each belt level
- How many points different moves should score (takedowns, sweeps, guard passes, back takes, etc.)
- How should matches be decided / other general rules

You can cast your votes either directly on the front page or by clicking "Ruleset" in the bottom menu bar.

The goal is to eventually have a community-backed ruleset that any gym or tournament organizer could actually use as an alternative to existing rulesets. The more people vote, the more meaningful the results become.

Would love to hear your feedback on this, and if there are rules or situations we've missed, you can suggest new items from the ruleset page as well!

Love this. Looking forward to seeing how it evolves over time. I think you should limit it only to people who actually compete though. :)

Don't know if it's by design or a bug that the survey never ends? I kept having same questions come over and over again. After five minutes I quit it...

Kind of reminded me about those psychological test back in the day where they repetitively asked if you wanted to be a gardener.

It should only show you questions that you have not answered yet (there's one for each belt level). Might be a bug when it runs out of questions. Maybe try to reload the page and see if it still comes up?

Thanks. Went back and finished it finally. No more questions.

If I vote “Yes” for a particular technique, would it be possible to automatically apply that vote to that technique for all higher-ranking belts?

That would make sense if all questions are “should X be allowed for X belt” but since users can submit suggestions, then we could also end up with something like “should C be illegal”. And then it would have the reverse effect to auto apply to higher ranks.

It would be great if we could differentiate techniques in gi vs no gi. Like knee reaping in the gi is kinda sus but in no gi I think it's fine. Very cool concept and I liked reviewing the data!

I agree, but also things quickly get incredibly complex if we add gi/nogi and different age divisions. It would basically be 10,000+ questions to answer per person 😄

I was thinking the same about knee reaping but then I also thought that honestly it's not really any difference if I'm wearing pants or spats and doing that.

I have added a push out suggestion the I think should be part of the discussion.

Please vote it up if you think it should be debated in the main/.

Im going to recommend a rule for vote but Id like some community feed back to hash out the details first:

Rewarding 1 or 2 points for lifting your opponent up off the ground for more than 2 Seconds.

In my mind this would encourage the bottom player not to allow being lifted and ingrain better habits.

I try to teach my students this all the time: either you make sure they can't lift you, or you let go and stand up if they do. Sure slams arent allowed and shouldn't be, but you are entrusting them to follow the rules and (not to get all street fighty but) its a cool skill to not give someone the opportunity to slam you.

I get it might encourage dangerous behaviour in the lifting player but if they know the rules well enough to know they can lift you, they might know a slam will get them DQd.

See any issues with this?

(Also we will for sure give the rules set a try for our in-house competitions!!)

You can post it as a suggestion here: https://www.beltchecker.c[...]ctedmenu=2

Then if it gets a total of 10 positive upvotes, it moves to the actual ruleset where people can vote on it

I suggested a similar idea rule, to not reward behavior which puts you in risk of a slam. Demonstrating in a controlled fashion that you could have slammed the other guy (e.g. with him having a triangle, arm lock or simply having jumped guard) both gives you points and resets the position either to open guard without grips or to standing position.

Perhaps a verbal signal of intention could be required (calling out "slam!", like simultaneous kiai needed to score points in some karate kumite competitions or some kung fu hero shouting out the technique names : -).

yes I saw. Since its a rule I haven't seen applied in any other ruleset I figured I'd stir a conversation about it first. To see the potential pros and cons before suggesting.

while very fun indeed, calling it out seems to come with a host of issues regarding verbal taps.
All though Im known to have conversations mid match Ill admit being strikt on verbal taps seems much safer.

This is awesome. I just submitted an anti-butt-scooting rule for consideration. Thanks for all of your hard work on this.

Ultimately, I'm not sure it matters as rulesets are really determined by whatever tournament one is competing in. One competing should always familiarize oneself with the ruleset he/she is competing in.

As far as training is considered, it's my personal belief that one should get exposed to everything that is legal and understand everything that is potentially dangerous. How else can you know how to safely apply anything or protect someone from hurting him/herself?

Now, if we are talking about proposing a standardized ruleset to appeal to major tournaments or developing a new tournament, then the ruleset has more merit or meaning.
