I love it. Other than no cursing and the quest against no gi. For the cursing just be cognizant of who is around you. If moms or kids are there, keep it to a minimum. Jiu jitsu can get weird quickly with students treating coaches like royalty. Looking forward to the Americanization of jiu jitsu where we are just coaches.

Couldn't agree more.

LMAO man , some dope rules like the dog bit and preventing no-gi and flat earth filth from contaminating the mats, but some of those I can't get with. :-D

America is Definitely a 'bowing' culture in the martial arts community, and has been since the 1920's. I find it SUPER weird that dudes think that is odd; likely because of the import of midwestern wrestlers who haven't trained in other American martial arts with Japanese roots.

The title 'Professor' has been used in martial arts since the late 1800's, and simply means 'Teacher', so strap on your gi and leave your padded leather-elbowed twill blazer at home, Professors. Academia doesn't have exclusive use of the title. They also call people 'Coach' in high schools, should only high school academics use the title coach? Silly.

No cussing would eliminate almost all of the music my students roll to -- we have kids classes and separate adult classes, use the language that works for each.

No hand signs? I grew up in the islands, I will throw that shaka at you and grin, and that's that.

FWIW, I am a professor in academia. I like my padded leather-elbowed twill blazer. :) I need a gi like that now (on the hunt).

My students call me "Dr. Wall" or "Professor." I call my BB instructor "Professor" or "Sir." I'm his student. He's earned it.

I would definitely pay absurd moneys for gis with leather patches on the knees and elbows. Good luck gripping that! Hahaha

Christopher Bradford, would you have a problem with a student who does not bow?
Nah. It's one of many ways to show respect; I'm sure he'll figure out some other way.

Yep, all of those rules make sense to me (though naturally he's being tongue-in-cheek). :D
Yeah, they are joking answer to the Gracie Barra academy rules he posted earlier.

But naturally I very much prefer Mr. Lukehart's rules any day.

Out of the 25 Gracie Barra rules, I agree with maybe 8, and find a bunch of them downright ridiculous, especially the ones about bowing to a picture of a Grand Master. :D

Yeah, they added that rule in the aftermath of my visit to GB HQ in 2013

From what I remember, Bill 'the Grill' Cooper wasn't wearing any undies at a major comp, his opponent had a strong trouser grip, resulting in unintended mooning. Can't remember if that was the trigger, but I imagine a contributing factor. Though he did also get DQed for it, so I guess the rule must have been in place already by then.

One of my friends also got so close at the weight cut, he had to go to the scale & fight the first match commando.... (Didn't get caught, and changed for the second.)

This makes sense if it's the difference being DQ's already on the scale at a major comp, but to have it as written down gym rule is hilarious. :D

Weird thing is I am forced on occasion to have an awkward talk with some female students regarding these types of things. Usually have to ask them to wear a rash guard under their gi and rash guard shorts too. Don't need that stuff on the mat.

Many of them do not wear the appropriate sports type of support (for lack of a better word) and all of their wares are open for everyone to see. Not good for a training environment.

As in just wearing a regular bra? No problems if it's a good sport bra then

Exactly. Some of the stuff they choose to wear is just inappropriate.

As someone who was in the GB system (and competed under their banner the last time I did so 2yrs ago, and still kind of identify as GB), I agree with a fair number of their "rules". There's also a number of them that I disagree with, and if I ever opened up a school under their name, would probably end up just being called a "training center" and not a premium school.

This puts me at odds with their philosophy/mindset, and I accept that. I like the curriculum (they give you the topic for each of the 16wks, it's up to the instructor to choose how they want to teach those topics) and the support that they provide behind the scenes; just find some things difficult to get in line with.
