Awesome film. I loved it all, even Sting in his ridiculous underpants. The books (especially the first three) could get incredibly silly and pompous, so this film frequently nailed that tone perfectly. Also, Patrick Stewart with long hair, excellent.

Friends. Read the damn books. I am not joking.

The original cycle by Frank Herbert has had a profound impact on my life. So many wheels within wheels. Staggering genius. One of the best works of fiction I have ever read.

Do it.

The new thing that's gonna come out looks promising. Star studded cast.
And Villeneuve is directing.

Thing is. Those books are so incredibly layered, very hard to do it justice on screen.

There is a tremendous amount of detail and subtext and backstory woven into the main narrative.

Same level as Lord of the Rings, but then the dystopian scifi version.

Pompous? Silly?

This is coming from the bloke who strolls around the mat wearing fruit salad gi's, whilst fanning himself?

Don't touch my Dune, mate. There's going to be consequences

Ha ha - I never said it was a bad thing. I'm a big fan of pompous and silly. :P

But seriously, you genuinely think those chapter headings aren't pompous? For example:

" To attempt an understanding of Maud'Dib without understanding his mortal enemies, the Harkonnens, is to attempt seeing Truth without knowing Falsehood. It is the attempt to see the Light without knowing Darkness. It cannot be."

"I think what a joy it is to be alive, and I wonder if I'll ever leap inward to the root of this flesh and know myself as once I was. The root is there. Whether any act of mine can find it, that remains tangled in the future. But all things a man can do are mine. Any act of mine may do it."

"The sequential nature of actual events is not illuminated with lengthy precision by the powers of prescience except under the most extraordinary circumstances. The oracle grasps incidents cut out of the historic chain. Eternity moves. It inflicts itself upon the oracle and the supplicant alike. Let Muad'dib's subjects doubt his majesty and his oracular visions. Let them deny his powers. Let them never doubt Eternity."

And so on. A lot of fantasy and sci fi is incredibly pompous, Dune is one of the classic examples, I'd say. See also, Michael Moorcock. :)

Well, to be fair. The entire saga is a meditation on and critique of hero worship / unwilling messiahdom / the corrupting effect of absolute power.

The parts you cited are mostly written from the view of devotees to muad'dib. They are intentionally written as if they were penned long ago, by fanatic followers of his path. Hence, the exalted phrasing.

Herbert blends several styles of storytelling and writing in his work. Depending on what character takes the stage. Using religious style 'pompousness', scientific and political analysis, historical narrative, meditations, stark descriptions of combat, dialogue, subtle manipulation, etc.

I find the actual prose and narrative writing of Herbert to be very clear, engaging and devoid of fluff.

Fair enough, that is definitely the main pretentious part. I found it distracting, though I can see it serves a purpose. My preference is for the later books, particularly when it gets all cyberpunk. Although I haven't read the non-Herbert ones yet, that would be interesting (same as I haven't read the non-Howard Conan books yet either).

Cool! Though I'm not really a board game guy, unless you count DnD. Played the hell out of the computer version, Dune II was an awesome strategy game.

Have you guys played the Dune board game? Originally from 1979, just got reprinted.
Didn't even know about it...Looks pretty cool!
I played D&D alot for two years when I first got in the military. I love games but I really don't know anyone who plays board games anymore.
