Would you rather get surprised or know before hand for your promotion?

This being said I was told in advance of my black belt which as you say meant I could get family and friends along. All my others were a surprise. Its always nice to see people promoted on the podium but often not all the team mates are there which takes a little of the edge off of it.
For me, the Podium Promotion is the holy grail. I'm sure a non-podium surprise promotion would be exhilarating, but I'd kind of like to know ahead of time so my wife could see me get a black belt.

I showed my wife the video of my gaunlet for my bluebelt and got asked if I'm sure I didn't get involved in an S&M Cult. :D
Sounds like your wife knows what's up, I'd think the same. ;)

Every time I've been promoted, it's been a case of "ah shit, now people are going to expect more of me.
This is exactly how I felt getting my purple belt and especially my brown belt. For the first week after being promoted to brown belt, I would anxiety before stepping on the mats. I would stress myself out thinking if I would be able to perform up to everyone's expectations of my new rank. I finally realized that I my instructor wouldn't have promoted me if I wasn't already doing it.
All my promotions have been surprises, and I prefer it that way.

Both my blue and my purple belt were a surprise. My brown belt I knew beforehand. Definitely was weird to know I was getting promoted, especially since that’s not how it usually is at my school.

I pretty much knew when I was going to get my blue and purple belts even though no one told me. For brown belt, my instructor likes people to attend the seminar to receive a promotion so that more people are there to celebrate. I had to miss the summer seminar because I attended the 2019 Maine Camp, but a teammate told me that I was going to get promoted. I just didn't know when. A few classes went by after returning from Globetrotters camp without getting promoted, so I was a little confused. Then One random class he pulls me up in front of everyone and gives it to me. I expected to get my brown belt, but was surprised by when it happened. I prefer the surprise. When I get my black belt, I'd like it to be random, kinda like when Dom Bell got his black belt from Galvao.

I experienced both ways..
The complaint with being surprised I heard the most is that people don’t know if their progression will come with a rewards and ended up got burnt out and sometimes quit altogether.
Personally, I don’t want to get notified of any promotions. I will deliberately not going to that class to avoid being promoted. I guess there’s no perfect way to do it.
