You don't have to get them on their knees - if you get the hands locked you can trip or throw them if they insist on trying backing out upright.
Thanks, i will focus on that when i can practise again!

Since I am not the strongest I have always favored the guard game. Any form of open guard , but especially butterfly. Using my skinny 6'2" frame to elevate or extend has been my go to setting up the Kimura into straight arm locks. Also every sweep in the book comes from that open/butterfly position!!!

I like working from the guard.
lock, chokes and sweeps galore!
from the top position I prefer side control with
a solid game of the Americana-straight armber - Kimura combos.

Don't like to put on too much weight (:

I tend to use the same techniques over and over, Guard->sweep->sidecontrol/mount->Kimura or advanvce to the back. So nowadays I know I can use that as ”fallback”-techniques. Focusing on the ”newer” stuff with getting to know the different guards with different sweeps and subs thats around, just to get a grip on what is happening so that my defence and offence gets better. Also working on my finishes to get the most effect from small effort.

But hey a nice high C takedown to sidecontrol and then exposing the partners arm for a Kimura finish is hard to resist sometimes

I move with the blinding speed of a banana slug and use the flexibilty of a brick..

Honestly upper body takedowns and trips and if in top use a grinding pressure game .. On the bottom attack the legs or sweep to get on top

Top game smasher here. 6'4" and 315lbs makes it a no brainer approach. I wrestled and played offensive line a little in high school so I am kind of conditioned to be aggressive and use my size.

I received my blue belt in November, and right before then through the time of the lockdown I had been working alot off the bottom though and learning to defend more. I cant close guard well though because of my knees and I dont engage in full blown leg lock battles on purpose because of my knees.

In the 6 weeks just prior to the lockdown I had been trying to expand my submission game away from the basics and do some things that people may not expect from someone my size especially knee bars. I am pretty good at getting to side control to all the normal attacks, but I started doing things like moving to reverse mount to attack knee bars and such.

Half guard top and bottom are my next focuses. I kept getting locked in top half guard in the tournament I did in March. I still submitted 2 guys from there because of my size and torso length, but I want to be better at getting out and attacks from half.

Harley Smith Top game smasher here...
/makes mental note of using special blackbelt techniques on Harley if we'd ever happen to meet on the mat... and by "special blackbelt techniques" I mean the ancient secrets of
a) "nah, I am a bit tired, I'm going to sit this one out" and
b) "starting to teach just a second before the opponent is about to finish a move, especially a submission"

Ath 4th degree you can make your belt come off during a roll at will,

and convincingly take a very long time to re-tie it.

Have been on 2 contradictory kicks for the last year. On the one hand I'm trying to make the "basics" work on the highest level training partner Is have. Mainly looking for back takes and rear naked chokes, armbar or triangle from closed guard or armbar from mount.

On the other side I'm trying to develop & innovate in my leglock game so I roll like 2 completely different people with completely different games depending on whether it is Gi or NoGi. Its a lot of fun

Is panicking, loudly grunting, and inhumanly sweating a game? That's what I do.
That's going to be a lot of peoples game (including myself) once we can start training again! lol

Depends.

Randori: kumi kata sequences to encourage kuzushi ( both tachi-waza & ne-waza)

Streets: ko soto gari > knee on belly w/ giftwrap

Look to pass, get to side control, secure their arm, move to north south kimura and wrap the arm up with their gi. Depending what they do, I can switch to various follow ups (kimura hug, armbar, breadcutter choke etc), or finish the kimura. If I'm losing it, switch back to side control and start again.

If I end up on the bottom, aim to get to closed guard, work their arm across their chest and trap it against me, hipping out. Go for Andre Anderson's sweep (from his awesome old DVD about guard) to mount and look for the arm. If when I trap their arm they have slipped off my chest, go for the back. As ever, try and get that kimura grip, then to the same north-south kimura sequence.

If I'm in trouble (e.g., their passing is better than my guard), go to Priit's running escape, work through the running escape > turtle > panda sequence to get on top, pass, then as always side control > secure arm > north-south kimura with gi tail overwrap. If they're better than me, that tends to mean a loooooot of stalling in running escape/turtle hoping they'll eventually give me an opening. :D

Since I'm getting older I've lately adopted a more Helio'ish mindset.

If you can't submit me, you can't beat me.

Over the last year+ I've been focusing quite a bit on Priit Mihkelson's defensive postures (turtle, running man, hawking, panda). I'd start in one position and let someone attack me and I'd just take what they give and change positions accordingly. Rarely going on the offensive except when it's right there. It's actually pretty rare these days that I just blindly 'roll'. I'm usually focusing on one thing or another while doing so (like defense).

Also had been working on the Rickson/Thornton style gravity passing before things went to pot.

All that being said, I guess my current 'game' is Soresu (Form III). Obscure Star Wars reference there. lol

hmm... well... kinda everything.
i let you do whatever you want while spinning out of your attacks and trying all kinds of weird shit myself.
passing and pressure is often a bit boring so i dont do much of that, also rarely i go for actual throws just for fun...
the more low percentage the sub is the more likely im gonna go for it.
the chances of me catching you by americana from bottom sidemount are multiple times higher than me catching you with a cross choke from mount.
doing lots of guard since i let nearly anyone pass mine all the time cause im too busy trying stuff and cant be bothered too much with retaining guard

i do any imaginable subs be it leglocks, wristlocks, cranks, slicers or random shit i come up with,
with the gi i do tons of things with the lapels be it subs, passes, sweeps, etc.

i know im a bit special. lol.

as for my goals, its mostly learning every possible way of dismantling the human body with bare hands
and connecting it all fluidly and effortlessly.
also mastering timing and physics of movement in general to a point where it looks almost like im ignoring the laws of physics

thats all :)

I have a longer background in Judo, so I try to enforce a standup game. But after I lost over 100 pounds at the beginning of my blue belt career 4 years ago I really started trying to build a guard game. I love closed guard, and overwrap guard from closed really stuck with me for some reason.

In January I was taught side guard from Prof. Brad Nico so I've been training and drilling that in my game (helps I have mats at home and a 17 year old :) ).

For open guard I really like X Guard so I try to use that as much as possible, and I have been trying to add different entries from different open guards to X Guard. Currently playing with butterfly guard.

Top game Im a big fan of arm locks and chokes from a Judo perspective due to my background, but I am trying to integrate anything and everything I know. My personal favorites currently are wrist locks / Americana / straight arm stuff and kata te jime (one hand chokes / breadcutter etc.

I also understand I am still a baby in this art so I am keeping myself as open as possible. To me it's exciting to learn new stuff and see if it clicks with me.

To folks here, if I am missing something or there's a better way that you can suggest I'm all open. Or open guards that will work for me please feel free (5' 10', 175 lbs)

Stay safe everyone!

with the gi i play lasso spider, x guard, 1 leg x. sitting guard. nogi i play x, 1 leg x, and this odd position where the bottom of my feet are touching each other in front of me like you're doing a groin stretch.

Ha - yep, very accurate summary of what I remember from when we sparred last year! I had no idea what the hell you were doing, but I kept getting attacked in extremely odd situations (like when I was trying to secure a kimura grip from north-south). Very much hoping we can do the same thing in July, if leglock camp still runs.

Followed by a tattoo again: I'm kinda more upset about the impact coronavirus has had on my tattoo plans, rather than the impact it's had on my BJJ plans. :P

This is extremely accurate.

Every time we roll, I also end up laughing hysterically, because I tap to weird shit that doesn't exist. Or does it?... (like TATU?)

You sir, are an anomaly.
I recommend no one to try your style for themselves, because for most it'll be a total disaster.

But somehow, you make it work...

+1

Only other thing is I actually advise to TRY Alex's style for everyone - it'll broaden your mind.

Just look into it! :)
