Ha - strangely enough, I used to be one of those "I will ONLY wear a white gi" people. A flip switched when I started my own club, and I went "fuck it" and dyed them all stupid colours. :P
I wrote an article on it back in the day: http://www.slideyfoot.com[...]shion.html

You mean, you have a lot of gis that are ready to dye. That was the great thing for me too: once I decided to colour my gis, I had loooooads of white ones to test out different dye options. :P

Well, you will never get into Gracie Jiu-Jitsu heaven wearing those gi's.
Next thing you know, you will be having sex for reasons other than procreation.
Or eating beans with rice.
Where does this madness end...?

Ha - yep, Helio would kick me right out! But then I wouldn't want to hang out with Helio and Carlos for eternity anyway. Great jiu jitsu, but as people they seem like they were arseholes (going by Choque and other historical sources, plus that infamous Helio interview in Playboy). :P

Can, we are all arseholes.
However, even aresholes can stand for one, or if we are lucky, more than one good thing before we die.
Not because that ever makes up for the evil that each of us have caused.
But, on the other hand,
we were all born to die,
born flawed in a savage universe designed to kill us.
The best most of us can do,
which is better than most ever achieve,
is to do our best,
and have some moment of truth, and courage,
and hopefully many moments of kindness.
Jiu-Jitsu addresses a form of violence,
and a method of character development designed to stimulate courage.
As to truth and kindness, we have to add those things ourselves.
But, truth without courage is rarely in the sun,
and kindness without courage disappears at the slightest inconvenience or adversity.
Helio was not Carlos nor Carlos Helio.
But each of us is the sole author of our intentions,
and we can only hope that our results produce more fruit than rot.

On the other hand,
the fact you are wearing a gi,
and practicing grapple-dapple-fu
speaks to the fact that perhaps
despite the entertaining warts in Choque,
Some dead men left a positive ripple that lived far after their spirits departed,
and their bodies were reduced to dust,
and food for the worms.
Stardust we were, and to stardust we return.

A sentence that came to my mind the other day...
Being well aware that "Abundance of original ideas is a sign of reading too little." That being said here it is:
"Life gives meaning to entropy." (J. Matsi 2020)

Yep: I may have a low opinion of the character and morals of Helio and Carlos Sr, but I have a great respect for what they achieved (in terms of developing and popularising BJJ).
Thanks to them, and especially Rorion (BJJ would be a very different beast without his marketing savvy and skill at expanding BJJ's reach outside Brazil), I and many others get to live an awesome life.

And here I am entertaining the (very possible) theory that there were a lot more people responsible for the huge growth and innovations of and in the art, besides the gracies (takao yano, the fadda lineage, the catch wrestling influence, george medhi bringing real judo back from japan, bob anderson, etc...)

No, it was mainly the Gracies and their big mouths and flamboyant style.
Even so,
Let's recognize a lifetime of service from Osvaldo Fadda,
and a long, slow death from dementia after that lifetime of service.
Death and disease, have no regards for service, nor belt ranks.
And every teacher of the art, was their own potential universe of impact.

I really like this.
It actually is even better in Estonian because of added depth due to wordplay. In Estonian language "meaning" and "thought" are the same word, so the Estonian "Elu annab entroopiale mõtte." could be literally translated as to "Life gives (to) entropy the thought."

Oh absolutely: like it says in Choque, Carlos and Helio were important, and I think it is fair to say they had a major role in developing and popularising BJJ. I pick those words carefully though, because that's VERY different from creating or founding, neither of which would be true. They were very, very far from being solely responsible. There were three other Gracie brothers in that same generation, for a start, who don't get mentioned anywhere near enough. On top of all that there are the numerous other figures you mention, a number of whom had been teaching well before Carlos and Helio got started.
I babble about it at length on the big history post I compiled a few years back: http://www.slideyfoot.com[...]u-bjj.html

It's a journey to be enjoyed, not a race.
And although I am no expert on girls,
having been married for 25 years,
I don't think jiu-jitsu is at the top of their list,
or anywhere near.

Nah man, what you lack in jiu-jitsu you'll make up in skateboarding. You're still getting some girl with a bit of luck.

It only took me 15 years to get my girl to train with me.

The thing is that I started JJ to be more fit and can enjoy skateboarding longer. But after some time in, I realized that Jiu Jitsu is way more than just an addition to skateboarding.

I m a skateboarder and I do that since 36 years.
People who told me that they do it just for fun etc
I laughed about them and after all these years hardly anyone of them got skilled in a sense of at least average.
No man !
I have goals and I work hard for them.
Sorry that’s just me going all in and achieving my set goals.
In 13 years I ll be 60 years old and my belt is gonna be very dark believe me.

I realised I created an environment for my self that I like to exercise in and then I built my habits around that. And now that it's blocked, it's super hard for me to keep physically active :(
Damn I feel this. After 6 weeks of nothing I finally forced myself to go for a miserable 2 mile run/jog/walk. Today I knocked out some living room exercises. I need jiujitsu so bad for so many reasons.

I did it.
Set up a mat room
Invited a strong fellow and
Warmed up heavy
And learned and drilled for two hours straight.
Good stuff from Bernardo and Adam. Looking forward to repeat this until I got it so deep in me that I ll submit somebody in my sleep with it.
And hey I ve sore muscles and a bit pain here and there.
