Grappling is like chess where I've mapped out every move I'm going to make and written down every counter you can make from each position. I don't think of moves on the fly anymore. I do something I know and know you only have certain responses you can make.

Occasionally you make a move I haven't seen before, but there's always a way I can reset back into something I know.

I don't think it's strategic beyond making a game plan, mapping opponent responses, and having a depth of experience.

So yeah, not like chess at all I guess.

I got most of the way through this then stopped reading...
It seems to me that people have presented their opinions and it has decended into "but my point is still better, even though yours works as well!"
After reading it subjectively, you're all right. My take on the chess thing...
It emphasises the fact that:
*Mental training is just as important.
*Strategy is better than physicality.
*There are moves and counters to them.
*Anybody is capable of participating. (unless its a 'gym' of dooche-machines that crush all the new people, shame on you).

Heck with the EVA mats you can even make a chess board! (This is a joke... Calm down cupcake).

All the analogies are great, if you look into them deeper... None of you are wrong... I know that's probably going to annoy some.

My 2 cents, now I'm going to train, drill or procrastinate on one of my assignments.

Not sure what StarCraft is like, but if it's similar to Age of Empires II then that is like BJJ :-)
What I meant is that chess is turn based while combat sports are more like real time strategy...

But even that is not accurate as you don't gather resources, it's interactive from the moment the round starts etc so games wise you could say BJJ is most similar to actually... IDK Tekken and other fighting games :D

Alan Shebaro (I think) had the best take on the limits of the chess metaphor.

"My turn, my turn, my turn, my turn, fuck you, I win!"

It's more like Starcraft. I'mma zergrush u ASAP :) I love the chess quote though: 'Play the opening like a book, the middle game like a magician, and the endgame like a machine.” -Rudolf Spielmann
Here's how I look at it:

White Belt = Connect 4
Blue Belt = Checkers
Purple Belt = Chess
Brown Belt = Total War Game (Real Time & Turn Based in combination)
Black Belt = Calm Relaxing City Builder Game

I really just made this entire post so people would get the connect 4 song stuck in their head. Your welcome.

I have noticed that when training with white belts or blue belts without as much experience they have a tendency to fall into a fallacy of 'turn-based jiu jitsu'.... If I can do 9 moves without you doing one, I'm going to do it.
I've really enjoyed starting every spar by letting my opponent put me in whatever position they want to start with. And then proceeding to work out of it and then once I have got back to neutral then go on the offensive. Making my defense so much better so that i can be more creative with my offensive without being worried about being put in bad positions. And depending upon how much better i am I will just let them start with a fully locked up submission or the setup before the submission is locked be it diamond or seat belt etc and if they manage to get the tap who cares.

No matter what happens at least I get something out of the roll instead of just wasting my time.

Also I think a lot of white belts are at gyms where they don't really have any purple, brown or blacks they are sparring with outside of maybe the coach who is taking it easy on them and they might get a false sense of how good they are by sparring with 90% white belts and maybe a couple of blue belts and another thing is the region someone is in. In the USA for example White Belts in the North East will destroy most blue belts in the South East. Just the reality of it.

BJJ isn't like Chess so stop saying it is. BJJ would be like chess if: - Doing cardio before a chess tournament gave you 2 moves for every 1 your opponent has and dieting gave you 5 extra pieces at the start of the match, - If different chess pieces varied in weight so that certain moves were physically harder to do than others, and your queen was covered in razor blades such that it literally hurt your fingers to do moves that involved her, - If you weren't allowed to move certain pieces without doing a handstand first, - If chess had about 6 fundamentally different rulesets and the most common one didn't allow you to use your Bishop or sit with your legs crossed. So all in all, it's got about as much in common as a car and a horse.
as is use this for reference based on the ability and skill you need and gain over time from learning...

BJJ HIGH level is Chess.... This is where you learn to setup paths and plans of attack to force you opponent to either defend or attack back. Not everyone is able to see the whole board but usually is able to know 4-5 moves ahead ( because of the force of the position that were put in). Sometimes you can Fools mate someone into something stupid but there is a lot of stalemates that happen at this level and even some people will go for the gusto and will pull it out in the end. Checkmate.

Bjj Mid level is checkers... You understand the movements and the way the game is played so you are tying to strategically placed you moves to capitalize one having to sacrifice a move to you. but at any given point in the game, the jumps of moves goes back and forth until you get to the end.

Bjj Beginners is LEGOS ..... We give you a bag for up pieces and you do what you want to with them and build what ever comes to you mind. Sometimes you get instructions on how to build stuff but its to your own imagination at the this time. build what you want with what you were given. As time goes on it starts to form things that become really good and then you move on to the higher and more difficult pieces.

Shrimping is really useful though. I even shrimp when I toss and turn at night switching sides with my elbows tucked in. Lol

Wim Deputter has great material out there, and he often makes the case that what he calls Baby Bridges (inside/outside shoulder escapes) are preferable to shrimping, most of the time, because you don't lose the connection.

Danaher also goes over why most people shrimp wrong , and why his Rising Shrimp is better.

Xande Ribeiro similarly points out bad shrimping is common (Diamond Concept), and where his Elegant Shrimp fits in.

I have regular sloppy white belt shrimp, elegant black belt shrimps, lemon shrimp, fancy purple belt framing shrimp, Rising Shrimp, coconut shrimp back shrimp, pineapple shrimp, side shrimp, shrimp salad... ^^

BJJ is like playing COD.... There are days you get tons of kills, massive score streaks, end up on top of the leader board after accumulating a bunch of fury kills... And then there are days where you rage quit and throw your controller at your wall towards your 65" screen...... Jiu Jitsuuuuuuu

'It's like chess' is what most people say when they actually mean 'it's complex'.
Just saw this: https://www.youtube.com/w[...]qnGPPTjV5I (5:51)

"Yeah definitely it's a game of chess, rugby is" - Andy Goode, England Fly Half

Everyone thinks their sport is "like chess" when it has any element of strategy. There's probably even some fucking sprinter who thinks "it's like a game of chess".

Strong opinions about the very essence of Jiu jitsu. One belt level in and you want to stop shrimping and do away with the original BJJ meme :-).
