Serious Question how do you define BJJ

Originally, striking was part of BJJ just like leg locks had little emphasis. Back in the day, this was the consensus of BJJ back then. However, now things are different. Yes, you'll learn striking in some BJJ schools, but not in most, at least not as part of the BJJ class. When talking about the majority of BJJ schools, you're going to be talking about a grappling system with a focus on controlling the opponent on the ground and submitting them. The rest will be the xyz. Again, nothing bad, just not really BJJ.
Hy Chris,
I think I get your point!
However it is your perspective or description of bjj, let‘s name it, „modern bjj“ (pure grappling).
Like from my perspective BJJ, which consists Punch protection, etc, too, is bjj too, but more „classical“ or „traditional“.
In your view you have xyz as kind of add on (like you said , nothing bad, but not bjj).
In my view, the xyz is standard and is part of the curriculum, not an add on to the grappling.
But that is totally ok! Everybody has its own view at what BJJ is.

Hi Marco,
I can understand what you're getting at, and it's not really the sort of thing that has an objective right or wrong answer.
However, I do see an issue in defining BJJ in this specific way. If we say BJJ is the grappling base plus whatever anyone adds to it, that essentially makes everything BJJ and as a result the term becomes completely meaningless. In terms of communication and conveying an idea meaning everything is the same as meaning nothing at all.

Hey Chris,
My name is still Mirco not Marco though ;-)
Of course there is no right or wrong and as the question was „how you define bjj“ it is pretty subjective and individual. There is no better, it just depends on purpose and context.
What all bjj approaches have in common though is they use grappling for control and Submissions and have a guard ( although Luta Livre uses guard too).
So in essence, if you would visit our gym we of course could roll together cause we of course train all the fundamentals and basic positions, although we might suck at, let‘s say „worm guard“ or „crab ride“ , 4/11, cause that is not the focus of our training, although I am interested in learning it, but it is not my priority for example.

Oh, sorry. I'm really bad with names. Don't take it personally. I thought one of my best friends in highschool was named Cliff Berton for like almost a year. Wasn't a big Metallica fan back then. :P
