BTW... unless someone is coaching (aspiring included) professional athletes then retention actually is a logical priority over skill-aquisition-speed. So the trainings being as interesting as possible and challenging to the right extent while being safe enough becomes priority.

in 2006 after a year of training Dave Lentz (black belt under rigan machado and marco santos at the time) gave me one. he charged to test for belts. I didn't pay to test for blue but people were complaining that I had gotten better and was tapping people or maybe he just saw me getting better and decided to promote me. but everything that guy did was designed to get more money out of people. people would quit and he'd charge their credit for a full years worth of training. he went white, orange, green, blue for adults. I forget who, I think robson moura also does this but I doubt its for the same reasons.

I got one.

I started bjj with Michael Yanez of Team Popovitch (they were ATT affiliated at the time).

I was told it was the same as a 2 stripe white belt. Never paid for any promotion, didn't do stripes either.

I didn't care much for the green either way.
I'll tell ya though, the green belts in our team were savages and could own pretty much any walk-in.

My understanding is everyone at Highlander MMA are basically killers.

Any opinions on adult BJJ green belts, or this mainly a Florida thing?
It isn’t just Florida, but it is common in Florida. I understand what they are trying to do, but think it is just a terrible solution all around. Green belt is a belt that takes kids a decade to earn by IBJJF requirements. Giving it to an adult in a couple months is just stupid and devalues it.

White belt is too big a category though. I mean there is a massive difference between a 2 day white belt and a 2 month white belt and a 2 year white belt. At about 4-6 months of training after getting some fundamentals down their is a significant and noticeable shift in ability, I start students at an “unranked white belt” or “low white” and have them earn the white belt most people start off with in bjj. The one with the “black tip”. This is my first belt promotion. This tells the student they have learned enough JiuJitsu to be competitive in a tournament as a white belt, and doesn’t devalue the green belt for kids, or make my adults feel like goofballs that don’t have a real belt and can’t even compete in tournaments without lying about their belt.

I have trained and competed in Florida for over a decade now. I don't recall having ever seen an adult green belt. Sounds like a mcdojo gimmick. Make people pay for belt tests and then create more belts.
They've been taught to not wear the green belt to a comp because it's not recognized.

Great to see you on here, William! Much love from Bristol, hopefully we'll see you on the Artemis BJJ mats again. ;)

This is my sentiment as well.

The green belt is my most feared BJJ belt. :D It's the final kid belt, almost like a kid black belt, and most of those little monsters who reach it are cold blooded killers. (At least where I come from, many don't even get it until they're old enough for blue.) Just think of the Ruotolo twins only a moment ago. To give it to an adult, who is not good enough for a blue yet, devalues its significance. Just use stripes if you must have something in between white and blue.

...or use the white-blue-white and blue-white-blue betl if you REALLY want to break the whitebelt down.

You can count on it. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

I teach a combined system of bjj and comba jujitsu (danzan ryu lineage). We use the kyu system. So an adult has to test and spend time in grade as a yellow and orange belt before achieving blue. At blue belt, the rank colors are the same. A yellow or orange still competes as a white belt in bjj tournaments. If people rank under before bjj exclusively there is no yellow or orange.

Also, I do what I want.
