Is there any way that you add the option to have a black belt with a white patch on it? Under Rob Kahn, or any of the Gracie Tampa affiliates, when we promote we go from brown belt to black belt with white patch > red patch > instructor bars > then we start receiving stripes. Of course I'm just a brown belt but I'd like to be able to choose the correct ranking that applies to me when I eventually earn my black belt.

That's a cool system, would be cool if you could select a blue patch too since some schools do that as well.

Yea Rob Kahn wears one of those since he is a direct Royce Gracie black belt. I train under Rob but I don't think it works that way for us. The white patch isn't permanent its just our original black belt after 2 years we earn the red patch etc.

Given that the timelines for the first three stripes are three years each, do you blow through the bars fast enough that you're still getting your stripes at 3/6/9 years after the initial black belt promotion? If not, how do folks square it when they change programs or register with an org (SBJJF, IBJJF, etc)?

I guess I don't personally see the benefit of showing extra gym-specific black belt ranks anymore than adult green belt ranks since BeltChecker seems to just stick to the IBJJF belts and timelines right now, especially if you'd just end up with the ranks you can already register on BeltChecker were you to register with IBJJF or similar.

For us its 2/2/2 for white, red then professor bars, at that point we start earning stripes. I believe this is how its earned through the Royce Gracie lineage I can't speak for other gyms but am aware that other lineages award straight to black with red patch for example Rob Kahn has been a black belt for over 20 years but only has 3 stripes from Royce (aside from his professor bars) on his black belt.

Not sure theres a right or wrong way, or why some schools go straight to red vs white, but this is the way my lineage does it.
