I hadn't even heard anything about this film until I saw this thread. I'll definitely check it out. Kind of already know what to expect going in, so I'll look to just enjoy the action.

I'm not too convinced by the trailer & early reviews about it's quality as a film... but likely gonna see it anyway because of BJJ. This pitch for jiu-jitsu (and to a lesser extent, for the movie) by Sean Patrick Flanery I think was pretty good! https://www.instagram.com[...]_copy_link
It was an enjoyable movie. Best of the BJJ mainstream movies so far.

Unfortunately the bar isn't set very high. :)

Some nice use of grappling techniques in a few MMA-oriented movie fights, but that's about it. (Btw there is a hilarious use of juji gatame in a recommended horror-thriller called Green Room, which is not a martial arts film otherwise.)

It seems, even after 50 years, that when it comes to fight choreography, the 80s Hong Kong movies will never be matched. :) Stuntmen of that era really took a beating for their paycheck. Unlikely to ever be replicated, although I admit we still get occasional gems like the two The Raid flicks.

I thought John Wick was pretty legit in terms of choreography and creative use of techniques. I like the firearms technique as well.

Agreed, although Chapter 3 was the only one I truly loved; it went over the top enough. :D The planning it must've took to execute those dog action scenes so well... beyond impressive!

This is why I will continue to think that Rogue One is the best Star Wars film, bar none. Along with a good plot, decent performances and SFX, it is not possible to get better fight choreography than having Donnie Yen in your film. <3
