On that note though Saipan is at the top of my list for vacation spots. They have diving, motocross, and BJJ. What more could a guy need?

There's still no BJJ in Cuba, right? I know that when I went (2016), there was nothing and nobody had any leads on the BJJ Globetrotters group. There had been a guy briefly who ran something in Havana, but he'd left. Considering how close Cuba is to the US and all the Cuban-American BJJ black belts, I'm surprised nobody has jumped on that.
Nothing that could be easily found when I went a few years ago. Judo & wrestling yes, but I wasn't THAT eager to train, since I only spent less than two weeks on the island. Dancing is better the option. :)

Ooo yes! I loved the salsa out there! The music was amazing, so was the dancing. In fact, I'd go so far as to say the music might have been my favourite part of the whole trip: https://www.instagram.com[...]Mt_U5p_yb/

How many of you go on vacation and always find somewhere to train while on vacation, or do you completely shut down to recharge the batteries?
I always train. Just got back from San Diego this evening. Spent a few days and trained at Surfight BJJ in Del Mar. Magid Hage and Joel Tudor own and teach.
Magid was great and so was Richard Colavin. Had a great atmosphere.

I'll be honest I can't remember the last holiday where I didn't train. I've been really lucky to make some great friends and have only ever had a couple of negative experiences - there def the rarity and tend not to be the instructors but a random grappler trying to prove a non existant point.

First off, what the hell is this "vacation" that you speak of? Is it a Jiu Jitsu related thing? How's it pronounced? VAC-Action? Is it about sweeps?

I travel between 100-200 days a year working at music festivals and concerts/events, and whenever I get a dark day, I'll always drop into a local gym to train. Running Newbreed for all those years, across the country gave me the luxury to meet a lot of gym owners, hell it's even gotten me some seminars at some gyms, which is always a bonus. I always travel with a gi because you never know. Funny story, I was working Austin City Limits in 2019, and the tour manager for Odezsa (who is a purple belt) was asking me about some leg lock entries, so there we are, onstage after their set, there are 30+ people onstage trying to break down their gear to pack the truck, and him and I are in the middle working on leg lock techniques.

Anyways, I gotta look into that "vacation" thing (is it Va-Kaaaa-tion?), and also this other thing people talk about... Sleep (apparently you just lay down and don't do shit for like 8 hours .. WILD)

an extended period of leisure and recreation, especially one spent away from home and work.

I don't often visit gyms these days when I am traveling unless it's someone that I know. My absolute best experience ever visiting a gym was in 2002 while on vacation in Hawaii and me and a buddy went to Baret Yoshida's place. We were in awe to just meet the guy (we were blue belts at the time) and he couldn't have been nicer or more welcoming. Fantastic experience.

Whenever someone visits our gym I always try to remember that experience and do my best to replicate it.

I normally spend every summer 1 month in Italy on the island of Elba where my wife is from. Apparently its the only spot in Italy where no one has ever heard of BJJ. Once someone said he knows a black belt in BJJ from Elba but it turned out to be a black belt in Karate..

I train at BJJ Cozumel on vacation a couple of times a year. It's my favorite place to train other than my home gym. Made some great friends there.

I don’t think I’ve been on a vacation that hasn’t been training based. Always manage to sneak training in somewhere.

I've been training for a year and half but since I started training everytime I get to go to other cities either for vacation or work I try to go to other schools. Even my coach said it is important to see and compare other schools and teaching methods. That way you can see if your level is par with other schools and you can learn more.
In the year and half I had the opportunity to train at:
Renzo Gracie downtown New York
Fight Sports Miami
10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Headquarters LA
Gracie University Headquarters CA
Todd Tanaka Academy in Honolulu Hawaii a week before everything shut down because of Covid. I was so lucky to had been able to vacation in Hawaii right before all when downhill.
Looking forward to visit other schools.
