7 years?? I'd find a new coach.
Indeed, I've advised them repeatedly to find a new coach. But yeah, they seem to have made their peace with it now, so up to them.

Obviously there should be no promoting if the student still trains under the original coach. But if that's not the case there should be no issue. Unless they go train under Lasu.
Ok yes but the debate is about promoting someone else's current student, so now I'm confused what your point was :D

I think it depends on the person. I can think of several friends of mine who I'd be happy to promote to blue if they ever asked me, as I think their coach is absolutely taking the piss by not promoting them. One person in particular, they have been a white belt for something like 7 years. This is despite plenty of comp success, solid jiu jitsu game, consistent training, great attitude etc. I've rolled with them lots and have no idea why the hell their coach hasn't promoted them yet.
Yeah... sometimes the coaches/instructors are the ones with bad character. But I think usually in those cases the students would end up switching gyms anyway.
I can only think of one case when a student went away, got promoted and came back to the old gym. And that was done by the book, the guy promoting asked about it from the first coach and it was OK'd by him. The student returned as a blue belt to win multiple medals in the national championships. :D
And Christian... I don't remember what my point was either. I shouldn't be roaming the internetz and forums when I should be sleeping. :D
