I honestly think this fits with the overall BJJ'culture' the most. We all more or less came to BJJ to get a break from the formality. It's seems a bit wrong to start bringing it in.
Strongly agree. I also hate the 1-2-3 clap militaristic thing, along with saying 'osu' all over the place. Both feel extremely out of place, BJJ doesn't need either. As indeed does the belt whipping gauntlet, another weird variation of a formality/ritual.

Though as ever, to each their own.

Mostly agree, but at the same time, I don't have a real problem with an overall "BJJ Culture" if you will. I'm honestly fine, for example, with the slap and fist bump before rolling. Nice to have a sort of universal "I'm ready" sign. Been in plenty of groups with people with no common language. It's nice having some common ground there and not accidentally rudely bulldozing someone off guard.

But the militaristic stuff is just too much. The clapping (I aware, I didn't know that was a thing before my first Globetrotter Camp), calling people master and everything like that. Hell, we don't even call my coach "coach", just call him by his first name.

Yep, that part I'm fine with, as like you said, it's a handy "I'm ready" sign without being super formal (like bowing to each other would feel to me).

I never did any 1,2,3 clapping in the military, but it does happen at my gym; however, I’ve never heard anyone say oss/osu so there’s that.

I don't bow. I'll do it if I visit a club that does.

For me its because I don't want any formality. Sure move for higher ranks when rolling. But I'm just any other guy. Squeeze m neck bend my arm and I might tap.

Some guys like paying respect for the mat by bowing. But for me showing respect to the mat is turning up with clean gear on and cutting your nails. :p

Sometimes instead of Oss'ing a non Osser I'll bow at them repeatedly after every sentence or gesture until they catch on that I'm just breaking balls like I do with the Oss nonsense. Lol Sometimes I get to or three people in on the joke and the subject is left very confused and they usually ask "wtf are you doing that for?" LOL

I also do stuff like calling a black belt professor too much. " Hello Professor what's going on today Professor. How is the Professor doing today Professor." That usually gets them to stop calling me that themselves. I don't like being called professor. I kind of like being called Dave alot.

Question is though....do you do the ‘surfer dude’ hand gesture on any given opportunity?!?!

I do.

We don't do any bowing at my club. Its not that I have anything against it, its just that I wanted to have more of a relaxed vibe. We all have respect for each other, it is something I make sure is present both by example and expectations I have on each student. We are a Jiu Jitsu Family or Brotherhood, we all friends on and off the mat and if there are any elements I dont like I address those with the individual.

I have trained at gyms that do bow, especially when I did judo and kickboxing, but in my MMA day there was no bowing. Each club to there own and I'm complete cool with that.

For us its fist bumps, a 1 2 3 followed by a synchronized clap to signify its time to practice a technique and then at the end of class we gather into a circle and discuss class, successive classes and sometimes a bit of a Q&A.

Thereafter we shake hands, kinda like I have attached. I'll kick it off, and walk around the circle, once I've shaken the first person's hand they file in behind me and so on until everyone has shaken hands.

That it for formalities.

My instructor has recently changed things up. After bowing at the end of class, we used to clap then shake everyone's hand. Now, after bowing, he has everyone circle up with hands in and do a "Team on 3". When I teach, I still do it our old way with the handshake.
