This just got posted on Reddit, worth a read, someone's detailed experience with symptoms of getting his carotid damaged from a cross choke attempt. https://www.reddit.com/r/[...]ction_cad/
Man, that's crazy! Like I said, my head MMA coach here also had a stroke and it was much worse than the one described in that post. His was also, most likely, dissection but he had taken a knee to the face during a shot in his last MMA fight and our assumption was that this was the cause.

There are always going to be Very Unfortunate Happenstances.
A few years ago a tragedy happened in MMA class where doing light warmup drills, a healthy and athletic young man got kneed in the chest, collapsed, bled from the mouth and died in a matter of minutes.
These types of things could happen to any of us at any time.

Disclaimer: this was not in my gym, I know of it from 1st hand witnesses and the newspaper stories.
The knee was like a regular semi-hard knee you would throw during drilling.
There was a (not exactly sure which) freak underlying health condition that everyone was oblivious about and there you have it.

I know 2 people personally that have had strokes after BJJ class that their doctors attributed to being chocked, Both were vertebral artery dissections. Neither guy had a memory of being chocked seriously more if having been neck cranked hard. I tend to like to play with puzzles and have spoken with a number of medical professionals and have come up with my own theory,,
Disclaimer I was raised by an acupuncturist abd have a good dealk of working knowledge of the human body BUT am by no means a medical professional just and idiot who gets punched in the face for fun. I think it is fighting out of the choke that is being done improperly cranking on the back of the neck.. We all have been in them and tend to just relax, defend and when the guy loses steam work out way free

In the link I posted, they guy actually felt the pain in the side of his neck from a cross choke when it was being applied. His common carotid artery ended up getting damaged and consequently clotting.
