Iam loving the variety of responses although it is amazing how many of us do it to get away from the voices in our heads

I have an interesting story. I first stepped on the mat in 2008. I "earned" my blue belt at this school however it turned out not to be the best BJJ instruction . I changed schools in 2011 and started back at white. I had to unlearn a ton of crap.
I then earned my blue belt for real and shortly after was accepted into the police academy and shut down my training for 6 months.
When I graduated, a black belt under instructor number 2 was opening a school and I began training with him. (Instructor #3) . I got a few stripes on my blue belt from him however he eventually passes away at the young age of 36.
I then moved on to to current instructor, Erick Tavares. He since promoted me to purple belt.
As for WHY I train, it is like therapy (as I'm sure it is to all of you) for me and I feel it's one of the best disciplines to learn for my job.

Im a Dm in 3.5 lol. Count me in!
Cool! It's mostly been all 5e in my group (and a tiny bit of Pathfinder, we had a game of Mutant and Vampire briefly too), but there are a number of veteran players who have played anything from 1st edition through to the most recent. I have been trying to encourage one of the DMs to run a 2e Dark Sun campaign, but it's difficult to pull away from 5e because DnD Beyond makes everything so wonderfully easy. The prospect of having to do all that DnD maths myself again in older editions is offputting. ;)

Part of me thinks. Combat sport are good for everyone.
But another part of me thinks. Certain people need combat sports, because they need something to fight back against their own demons.
As I got older. I've been more & more convinced the second thought is correct.

I don't think my 9+ years count as being in the game 'for a while' :D but I feel this is the perfect sport for me. I'm probably the laziest person you know. No matter how lazy I feel, when that round timer buzzes, a big motherfucker grabs me and intends to strangle me or break my joints, I have no chance but work. Also, if you indeed wanna take it lazy & use the least effort possible in these situations, you need to be technically unequivocally superior to your sparring partner/opponent. Which is why you hone your techniques a ton. I find this combination simply irresistible. And when you realize the depth of the levels in the game... It still blows my mind how good some people are. And just to get a little bit good at a few things already makes you better than the majority in most gyms... oh man.
Lazy? You walked through snow with a sleigh and ate beans by a campfire. If thats the finnish version of lazy then in screwed

That is basically what I had to do every day to get to school when I was a kid... Except we didn't have fire back then. Welcome to Finland!

Started for self defense, that turned into sport and now I’m doing it for fitness and social aspect.
I also seem to never stop being fascinated with sport as an art form.

You misspelled "BEARS" there...
I don't mind my inner dialogue too much, maybe I've thought about it enough.
But there are very specific aches and pains I start to get when I'm NOT training (back, elbows, wrists). Obv one could argue that without sports I might not have them in the first place :D

It has truly given me MY life back... I have reached a point where I am actually “living” my life and not just “alive”... I will forever be grateful to Jiu Jitsu and all who have shared it with me!

The benefits of Jiu Jitsu are real, that is what keeps me on the mats, even after all the injuries (Dodge neck, wonky knees and other joint related injuries)
13 year of Jiu Jitsu definitely isn't as long as many of you, but I got into the game late. I was 30 when I started, but I have always done sports that were hard on my body (Rugby, Powerlifting, offroad motorcycling, mma, etc.)
Jiu Jitsu is the vehicle I have chosen to keep doing for many many years to come, both for the physical and mental benefits. Its just my happy space. I enjoy the physicality, I enjoy having to solve the rubrics cube, being challenged mentally, physically and emotionally at times. Its that which keeps me coming back each week...
I also enjoy sharing it with others, because I want them to have the opportunity to experience all the benefits I have.

It's the perfect balance of Physical and Mental for me no matter what is happening for me health wise BJJ has always been the one thing I can adapt and continue to be active in. I can easily work around injuries and as far as leveling me out its also the best kind of self care I've come across from a mental health point of view.

I was just talking to people about this the other day if i wanted to compete in KB or MMA again I have to get in fight shape and would never live through the fight camp but with grappling I can go from coaching guys on the sideline to walking out on the mat is just good shape and hang and have fun while being competitive

for me reasons are endless
jiu jitsu didnt just save my life it literally gave me one
the never ending striving for perfection
its super exciting always
my body mind and soul are just made for jiu jitsu
jiu jitsu is life and life is jiu jitsu.
thank god i found it otherwise id be a super down depressed mofo
the more i advance the more exciting and interesting it gets
what more could one ask for,
i dove quite deep into it over the last decade and am at the point where i develop my own systems and stuff
it just never gets boring
i can only try to give back some of the positivity it has brought me by devoting my life to it
also im a super weird ass introvert and i have never found something that gives me the ability to express myself and connect with others as much as jiu jitsu does
i would say theres nobody who loves jiu jitsu as much as i do
but i cant since marcelo garcia said that already...
but right after marcelo theres me :)

I feel a clarity in my head after training. Even when injured and not 100% it makes my mind focus on one specific task. Calms the brain and has a lasting effect on my mental health. I feel the body can be taken care of and yes may get injured and naturally break down over time. But you can protect it and train smart so that you reap the mental benefits for life.
