Hello, I've worked as a scorekeeper at tournaments and I'm looking to begin refereeing at some small local tournaments. Any tips or advice as I look to step into the new position?

First things first...don't do it.

Okay, I tried. Now...go attend an IBJJF rules meeting. It's long, boring and overly complicated. But it's the most intense dissection of the standard ruleset that you are going to ever get.

Thanks for the reply! I'd love to attend a rules meeting but the ibjjf won't acknowledge my existence because I got promoted from blue belt to purple belt quicker than they would like.

Doesn't matter you should be able to attend anyway (and pay, of course)

Ive tried, they wouldn't let me. Makes no sense
Yeah, that's surprising as they usually find a way to take money. Well then. Find a smaller tournament that is happening soon and reach out to the organizer about reffing.

I agree with Joe: don't do it. Lol. That being said, I always take the time to watch ibjjf's videos on their rule set (from their website) before I ref. They're fairly helpful, straight forward and free.
