I don't understand all this talk of maturity. Having a Black Belt in BJJ only signifies that you are good at BJJ. You could be a total douchebag and still be a black belt in BJJ, so maturity isn't even an argument. That being said, if a ten year old can perform as a black belt on the mat, he's a black belt. Unfortunately, being a black belt means you can actually tap other black belts who are not children, which is likely impossible for a ten year old, but look at this kid. He's as developed as a full grown man, so if he has the skills how can you argue about it.
Because you can't promote someone to Black Belt until they are 19. That's why.

Are you a police officer or a lawyer by chance? this rules driven stance to BJJ seems very out of step with my experience of BJJ, which I admit is restricted to Montreal. Anyway, IBJJF is just one organization that governs the rules of BJJ comps.

Oh Canada......

The IBJJF does not just govern the rules of BJJ competitions. They govern the rules of IBJJF tournaments. They also have requirements for their belts.

If you are going to be competing at IBJJF and/or want their certification then you would need to follow their requirements. That's not a "law" dude. That's an organizational requirement with that particular organization.

On Beltchecker if you want your black belt certificate you need 1000 points of approval to get it. You can't get it without that, correct? Different certifying bodies, same certificate.

Since you seem to be confused about the difference between a law and an organizational requirement let me use another example. Let's say I want to apply for a M.D program at University of Central Florida. They require a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0, a minimum Science (Biology Chemistry, Physics, Math) GPA of 3.0 and a minimum MCAT of 500. I'm not making that up, you can see it here:

https://med.ucf.edu/admis[...]uirements/

But if I want to apply for a M.D. at the University of Georgetown they don't have any GPA or MCAT requirements:

https://som.georgetown.ed[...]ons/mdphd/

So each organization is offering you a certificate but each one has different requirements to be eligible. This is an organizational requirement. You can choose which you prefer to be under.

Who determines what's official and not official? IBJJF? SJJIF? FIFA? The problem with bjj is that it's a organizational mess. :)

Except that’s not true.
You can’t compete as a black belt in IBJJF before 19.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t be a black belt.

Mica is 17. He is also a black belt. Those are facts.

Micael is gonna complete 18 years old this October. He will register for his first IBJJF championship as a black belt after complete eighteen years old. All good in my view!
You need to be 19 under IBJJF rules not 18. So he won’t be able to compete in IBJJF as a black belt until next year.

Ironically he won’t be able to compete as a brown belt either. While they won’t recognise his black belt, they will however recognise that he is no longer a brown belt. He’s stuck in no belt limbo with Robert Degle for the next while.

My solution is that maybe (to the behest of probably a bunch of adults who complain about all things IBJJF/Gracie), they should make the black belt with the white patch a standard in the ranking system like they do in the Gracie Academy, and with Royce, Caique's and even (eye roll) the Valente's. The Black Belt fighter, with the Red Bar being the Black Belt Instructor, and the White Bars on the Red patch as a Black belt Professor (with the subsequent degrees). This was those younger guys with legit black belt skills can receive their rankings, but still have to grow into the instructor/professor role.... Just a thought.
I actually don't like this solution as I think it's avoiding the actual problem. If the issue is not being able to compete at the highest levels, then I think it makes more sense to change the competition system. I think implementing a qualifier model for the highest level competition makes more sense here, like Black Belt Worlds for example. All the others can keep the open format. If you win the qualifier, you go to the next level regardless of your belt. Then everyone has a chance.

Sure, anyone can put on a black belt and call themselves a black belt. In fact why not just go ahead and give yourself one. I mean, who cares, right? No reason to have guidelines or standards.

Or laws, for that matter. Why don't we all just go ahead and do whatever we want. Seems reasonable.
