I remember that.
My issue with certification is that it is primarily finance based to certify you have to pay and to be certified you have to pay.. At least here it is like a peer review you here the good and bad an make a decision for yourself

Let's face it certification is meaningless you trained with someone and they awarded you the belt that is all that actually matters
Agreed. When your instructor promotes you, THAT is your “certification.”
Beltchecker is basically like a secondary verification that you didn’t fake a promotion or certificate from some unknown entity; nothing more, nothing less, amd I think that concept is PERFECT. No need to add troublesome “certifications” for the very logistical nightmare reasons Christian stated.
IBJJF certification “could” male sense in some circumstances for some schools, but the whole “provisional” thing essentially invalidates their own promotion schedule while being a slap in the face to every Professor out their giving legit brown and black belt promotions to non-IBJJF registered students. It’s equally a slap in the face to the person waiting for their provisional status to expire. What happens during that two year period to DO anything to establish legitimacy? NOTHING.
The whole concept of the IBJJF and their money-grab-for-everything approach is disgusting and a dishonor to our entire Art, which is why I haven’t and will never register with them or support any of their tournaments. The more money they get, the more abuse they’ll enact.
That’s just where I stand, to each their own.

Really, "provisonal" status is nothing more than a monetory and time punishment for those that have the audacity to only start paying ibjjf at brown or black belt level
Take that as a warning all you purple belts, better pay up now and never let your dues lapse or you'll be punished by the ibjjf
luckily there are other options for comps in most places

So, I've been jumping through the hoops of the IBJJF Black Belt Certification process (it's a business decision). In order to get fully certified as a black belt with those guys, you have to: take a CPR/First aid course, take the IBJJF rules course, pass a background check, pay a ridiculous amount of money, and take the 'Safe Sport' course (an educational course on preventing abuse in sport). This is all after you are basically 'vouched' for by someone who is a little higher up on the pyramid scheme. Here's my personal take on each of these requirements: 1) CPR/FIrst Aid - affordable and helpful for my job as an instructor/gym owner. 2) IBJJF Rules Course - helpful but not necessary... especially since all we did was just watch the videos that they make free online anyway. 3) Background Check - I really like that they do this. 4) Paying a ridiculous amount of money - Why does this stupid shit cost $400, for real? 5) Safe Sport Course - most of this was common sense information, but I'm glad they're making other people take this course... I was thinking, throughout this process, that maybe it would add a little value to the Beltchecker certificates that you can buy on here if we went through a similar process. What if beltchecker, maybe just for black belts, offered a certification option that made you jump through some hoops as well, and they could 'manually verify' it, and charge a bit more money that would go to the maintenance of the site. I'd be interested to hear what the community thought about this, and if y'all thought maybe it would be valuable? If so, what requirements would you feel would be the most important? Personally, I would include a background check, Safe Sport (or something similar) and... not sure how this would work, but something certifying that you're not sleeping with your students... ??? Anyway, what are your thoughts?
Hello , I am here in Taiwan, and my professor who was certified by IBJJF at the brown belt level. Want to get his black belt certificate. Do you mind expanding the talk on the process a little more. What do you mean have someone higher up to vouch for your black belt ?? (Do you have to like sort of join an affiliation?)
Thank you in advance professor. I have been trying for the past couple of months and it has been a nightmare (everything comes with string attached) that is why I like the beltchecker community

You can register as a black belt for $35 and still do pretty much anything you want without getting the certificate, which will cost your instructor around $500. I jumped through all the hoops to get the certificate as I was led to believe I would not be able to "function" as a black belt within the IBJJF, but it turns out that this is not the case.
For all intents and purposes, I don't think it was worth it, although I did feel that the information in safe sport, as well as the rules webinar, was very helpful. I also like that they do a background check (at least here in the US).
That being said, you could just as easily get your own background check done and post it on beltchecker, you can watch the entire rules webinar videos for free on their site, you can take safe sport for like $20, and then donate $40 to beltchecker (a not-for-profit) to get your beltchecker certificate. So, for like around $100 you can do pretty much the exact same thing as getting certified with the IBJJF (which will cost you around $500).
Your choice!

Actually, I'm not sure the $500 certificate grants you a membership that allows you to compete in their tournaments. So in fact the certificate gives you less value than the $35 membership.

Thank you so much for the reply professor. The problem is for my professor to be approved by ibjjf (even for 35 dollars membership) he needs someone to sign the paper… and he needs someone higher on the pyramid scheme (great analogy btw). And that usually comes with strings attached

Then he does not need the expensive black belt certification, only the regular membership. The certificate is just a piece of paper that has no actual use.

You have to be a registered member to be eligible to get the certificate. So, in that case, the real cost is definitely over $500. Here's a breakdown of costs for me (in USA):
IBJJF membership: $35
Rules webinar: $80
First aid: ~$20
Safe Sport: ~$20
background check: ~$20
Certificate: $400
Total: ~$575
Now I can register my team ($70) and register for a tournament ($120)! Yay!
I think I really need to stop thinking about how much money I'm throwing these guys, as I'm having a good day so far...

Yeah man, I feel you. I was lucky enough to "know a guy" lol, but this was the same guy who told me I needed the certificate as well, haha.
Thankfully, said guy was generous enough not to attach any strings for his services.
One thing your instructor might try doing is to maybe attend a BJJ Globetrotter camp somewhere and to forge a relationship with one of those special "diamond" members of the pyramid scheme, who also happens to be attending/teaching at the camp. Otherwise, it's possible he could do the same thing here on beltchecker, albeit remotely...

I would be happy to sign it if I wasn’t banned from the IBJJF for doing just that :D

Yeah truly I love what you done with the community.I feel shitty for feeding the beast but it is purely a business move. I do not agree with this at all.
