Fight last Sunday was a mental torture to Felipe!
FloGrappling has come out with a statement that Felipe did accept the match with extra monetary incentive under the rules and conditions it was held.

I love 2 out of 3 matches as I can literally take the first match to wear down my opponent and don't care if I lose the first match. The 2nd match is always the hardest but whoever wins the 2nd match pretty much always wins the 3rd. The last match is the easiest if there is a 3rd match.
But at local tournaments just going 5 to 7 minute rounds people get exhausted from 1 single match if they are in the over 30 division a lot of the time and I just enjoy when me and my opponent are both exhausted because all of my stuff works when I am bat shit exhausted. That's when the fun begins. I really really enjoy going into a match when me and my opponent are both tired from previous matches.

I guess it wasn't just cardio, a no time limit fight requires mental strength, it's an endurance test, both gets tired and the competition is about who is the last one to give up. I am not saying Gordon wasn't going to win, he would probably be the winer. But Felipe reached a point where he didn't want to go anymore. Something like ' Fuck that shit, I already did what I was paid to do, I made the fight as promissed and signed on the contract and I will fight other 1000 times in my life. Today is not the day and I don't want to keep rolling with this douchebag.' Felipe was very close to Leandro, he wasn't mentally in the mood to fight. I went to Leandro's funeral and I saw that fighters as Murilo Santana, Eduardo Telles and Buchecha went from USA to Brazil just to say goodbye to their friend. Buchecha 13x IBJJF world champion, an absolutley mental strong man, was crying like a baby. I am pretty sure Felipe also wanted to be there! AGAIN I am not saying Gordon wasn't going to win. But last Sunday 07/08 was not the day for this match.
For sure, just keeping focused on your game plan would be insane to do, let alone staying sharp in a no time limit match. Independent of that, I still dislike the format where people can play a game to see who will last longer. I'd take a points match where you go all out within 10-15 mins over this any day.

If Pena had won the match we wouldn’t be having this discussion. It would be, what an inspiration, he did it for his friend. It’s time to move on to ADCC. Should be a really fun competition.

I felt just the opposite. The most boring match since the double guard pull 5050 fiasco at Abu Dhabi pro a few years ago. You could see Pena didn't want to fight. And Gordon looked the same. As both guys have gotten more bulky, they've slowed down a lot and lack the stamina they used to have. Very disappointing.

We will agree to disagree. I really enjoyed the match and it looked like they were both there to win, especially the first 30 minutes. Like I said ADCC should be great. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nicholas Meregali win.

I actually think Gordan was toying with him just being more efficient. Maybe playing extra safe/smart at the start but I really think he was wanting to drag it out to mentally exhaust Pena not just Physically.
More a psychological strategy than oh Imma just wear him down. Him getting tired is just a bonus.

I think that was the plan, no time limit.

I think you are both right. It is one thing to keep it together for 10-15 minutes of mental fatigue, but another thing altogether to do it for 30+ minutes. He would have been carried off of the mats (again) had he won and everyone would have talked about how mentally tough he is. He quit and has the built-in reason/excuse of Lo's death. Kind of a no lose situation for him in terms of his BJJ reputation.
The question is: Who learned the most about their opponent for the next time they meet? I think that Gordon found out that he was right and Pena's game is amazing and very dangerous but hasn't changed in the intervening years. Pena, on the other hand, learned that Gordon has a huge gas tank but learned nothing about his game. Gordon was just starting to get going when Pena quit.
