I come from the Burmese arts originally and the styles I did had no belts/ranking systems so I have never really been big on it. With that said I do give a certificate with the belt and it is more so the person has some paperwork in case something happens to me because as a cancer survivor I realize I may not be there for their full journey.

By the way does anybody else not really do the stripe thing?

Yep.
Sometimes (during graduations) we give some stripes to white or coloured belts. It is a question of motivation, especially for the younger guys and girls. But most of the time we do not really „do the stripe thing“.
I earned the first 2 stripes on my bluebelt at once. Later two more. On my purplebelt were 2 stripes at least, my brownbelt had not seen any stripes at all.

At Origin we still adopt the stripe system, not sure if that’s a good or bad thing it’s just the done thing here.
Similar to the certificate thing, every club will operate slightly different some will issue and some will not.
I don’t t tend to think or dwell on either of these things to much, they don’t affect the way I train or teach nor why I enjoy Bjj.
I think once you focus on belts, certs.stripes etc you lose focus and enjoyment on why your there in the first place.

Personally Bally I received a certificate for my blue belt, but did not receive one for my purple.

I don’t think the certificate is THAT important. I put more consideration into training photos, competition photos, promotion photos and personal vouching than I do the certificate.

I've gotten the impression that all-certificates-profiles don't get their upvotes anywhere near as easy as those with really good promotion photos with a well known instructor. Myself, I neither upvote nor downvote certificates-only-profiles, but i usually upvote when there is a lot of photos together with the instructor on the diploma, showing that there has been a long relation with the student. Even if it isn't promotion photos, so I wouldn't had upvoted (perhaps even downvoted) if it weren't for the certificates.

I just posted all of my certificates
...and I just voted for you. It's also great that Prof. Machado list you as a professor on his website, but I do like a good paper trail.

When I was at 10th planet for three years, we were never issued certifications. My coach just rolled with me one day and said "are you a blue belt yet? No? Well, you are now." And that was that. Then, when I transferred over to Checkmat, I restarted back as a white belt, issued a certificate for my two stripes and issued a certificate every since all the way up to brown belt by different affiliations. I am not oppose to them, but I would not give out a certificate for every stripe you hand out (unlike what Checkmat did). I am not worried about receiving a certificate. My knowledge will produce my rank around my waist on the mats, but again, I am not opposed to them being issued either.

As an historian, I think it will be cool for my future generations to look back on my academia diplomas and my sport accomplishments.

Or maybe I am just a nostalgic fool. Who knows.

It's interesting that your 10th Planet gym didn't give certificates since they're (presumably) no-gi only. In-house, it's no problem: everyone knows you're legit. From a Beltchecker perspective, it would be hard to verify the rank since there would be neither certificates nor promotion photos of an instructor presenting a physical belt. The rank would be 100% legit, but also unverifiable, which would put the athlete in an awkward spot.

My wife is a history professor (and BJJ blue belt) and I'm a philosophy professor, so we both have a soft spot for diplomas. I like having as much empirical evidence as possible, and it's always nice to have something for the "archives."

Yeah, it was a bit cumbersome to say the least. This was back in 2009 and I remember when Rick Marshall designed a mock up list of every person's rank and their promoting instructor. I believe it is still up with my name on there. At best, they only did pictures and hand out belts, which it seemed Eddie would only do that routinely. However, in my case, it was neither.

That is very cool. My undergraduate degree is a dual concentration: history / philosophy. No doubt it is why I fancy them, as well.

I have records of my family lineage going back 250 years and it is always intriguing to see the lives that were lived by my immediate ancestors.
