Let me as a mild and few-worded (not true actually) Nordic/Eastern European person point out the obvious: Likely, everyone's around you (including your own) life would be more pleasant and easier, if James, you'd be a person who considers and expresses care towards other people and their perspectives more. Now, Beltchecker forums would be less entertaining for sure. You seem to be motivated by perceived challenges, competition and conflict overall. So maybe you need that type of stimulation in your life. That's fine. Please just don't cause unnecessary harm to people who enter into interactions with you without same mindset and possibly lacking resiliency.
Conflict is not interesting. It's annoying. Others are entertained by it for some reason. Always assuming and searching for it.

Lineage is important to know for many nerds like me who believe history is important to know.

I think for some people they want to get as close to the source as possible, for others they just want to be connected with the history and the team, and lastly some people want to be certified by an instructor with a stellar reputation. I already am excited for everybody who trains JiuJitsu, but if you tell me you’re a student of Marcello, Terere, Roger, or another BJJ celebrity I’d be pretty excited for you because I love those guys.

My lineage is Carson Gracie Sr > Rodrigo Medeiros > Me

Marcello dropped into my 'second' home club in Spain last night. Soooooo gutted I wasn't there :(

It's not important, but I find it interesting and fun to know the lineage. So I got it on my profile.

Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie sr. > Carlinhos Gracie jr. (Gracie-Barra) > Yuki Nakai (Paraestra) > Takayuki Hirose (Paraestra TB) > Robert Vingsnes (AABJJ) > Sindre Eide (AABJJ) / Me.

I think understanding your lineage can be important to passing on the growth through the history of this sport to new students. Knowing where you come from can help give perspective to where you are going. As an artist I enjoyed creating some artwork for my instructor to display his lineage in the gym.

I always felt the whole lineage praising culture was kind of weird. If I take my own students, some of them are super talented and medal at big tournaments. Some of them are blue belts for 10 years and lose first match in every single competition. Some of them copy my game to the detail, some go their own way and develop completely distinct style. I dont see why they should get anything out of saying I’m their lineage, when so many other factors play in. An important point to consider of course, is that this is kind of unique to jiu jitsu. Why don’t golfers, tennis players, table tennis players, cyclists and marathon runner talk about their lineage like jiu jitsu people do? It’s weird. Just weird.
I was told in the 90s it was to show the legitimacy of your claimed blackbelt. Maybe because the art was so new to the United States, they were trying to preserve the art before blackbelts popped up all over without credential. Who knows haha

This makes a lot of sense. "Lineage" is basically the simplest form of Beltchecker :D

Agreed! Before (or outside of) beltchecker, lineage is what gave universal legitimacy that you were training in authentic Gracie/Brazilian Jiu JItsu.

My lineage is: Jigoro Kano > Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Francisco Mansor > Joe Moreira> Adam LaClair

I received my blue belt and spent considerable time before purple belt under Roy Harris, a high ranking Joe Moreira black belt, who laid much of the foundation of what my game is today. I received my purple and black belts directly from Joe Moreira.

1) I'm thankful for the increasingly condensed BJJ information package passed down to me
2) Honoring the BJJ ancestors feels right and I like being a part of something
3) I'm glad that we need to prove things physically. If we didn't, I would ignore lineage.

Ended up looking into this because my instructor promoted his first Black Belts after 7 years of being a Black Belt himself. Where I train at is not very ritualistically traditional (no habit of bowing at door or mat, no rank filing to meditate at a portrait, etc...) as a dojo; probably described as 'very Americanized'... but still interesting to see where it all comes from. Mitsuyo Maeda → Carlos Gracie Sr. → Hélio Gracie → Rolls Gracie & Carlos Gracie Jr → Rigan Machado → Chris Haueter → Eric Hemphill → Josh Botkin
I’ve trained with Eric Hemphill back in the days, he came to Denmark once or twice as well to my gym. Say hi from me if you see him!

I totally agree!

I'd say lineages are similar to brands of clothing or electronics. You'd hope that Levis or Sony don't risk their reputation by putting their name on terrible quality, although it can happen. You can also find products from a brand you'd never heard of that is still of fantastic quality. I'd still say your chances are better going with brands you recognise and trust, unless you are willing to put in the time of doing a lot of googling or trying the goods out hands on.

Lineage plays role in my own "algorithms" for verifying here on BC, where (without googling) I like to be able to track the lineage to a name I'm already familiar with, with evidence of connection all the way. The more distanced from the trusted lineage, the more difficult to verify a profile for me. Good evidence from a promoting coach who I know nothing of and is not on BC is not good evidence to me and neither is it if the promoting instructor is on BC but doesn't have good evidence him- or herself.

Lineage is no doubt still on BC very handy in time and energy efficient verification - why spend time googling someone who hasn't spent the same time uploading their lineage to give them your verification when you can use the same time verifying 10 others, who have taken their time entering lineage and uploading evidence connecting them to that lineage (or to a well known name that itself is a "source of lineage")?

It is an interesting question if it can be BJJ at all without lineage going back to Maeda. Must all legit BJJ practitioners have a lineage? Must they know it and display it?

My lineage btw: Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rolls Gracie > Romero Cavalcanti > Alexandre Paiva > Johan Nyh
A quite short and widely trusted lineage which I've been loyal to since I first started training in 1996. Being less loyal, switching affiliation to someone you'd meet much more often but not with as well known or short lineage, would probably had rewarded itself with faster promotions and in many ways faster technical development over the years. Sticking with lineages can come at a cost. So maybe my lineage says even more about my personality and values, besides practical skills and recognition.

Mine changed along the way. Originally I was at a checkmat club, so Leo Veiera/Rico Veiera > Bobby Andersson/Anders Odhal.

However, after relocating to a new area and club as a brown belt, it changed. I was given my black belt by Octavio Couto Jr

My instructor and their instructor in turn and so on put extra emphasis on hygiene and smelling good! ;-P

Ok, perhaps a bit of swenglish or something there. I think what I was trying to say was more along the lines of short way up to instructors which many will know without googling and also that both my instructors and I have stayed with the same instructor for a long time, so the are not a lot of parallel lineages to keep track of.

And I hope I smell good too :-)

My lineage is typically described as Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Helio Gracie > Rickson Gracie > Marcelo Behring > Fernando Yamasaki. But there's an interesting site here:

https://www.judo-ch.jp/en[...]/world/br/

that suggests that it could also go Maeda > Ogawa > Shigueru Yamasaki > Fernando Yamasaki.

My BJJ lineage is Mitsuyo Maeda > Carlos Gracie > Carlson Gracie > André Pederneiras > John Lewis > Egan Inoue > Burton Richardson > me.

It’s funny how some arts care about lineage while others do not. Jeet Kune Do is obsessed with lineage (e.g., Bruce Lee > Dan Inosanto > Burton Richardson > me). By contrast, I have no idea what my judo lineage is even though my promotion to nidan under Randy Russell was certified through USA Judo.

Lineage in itself means nothing to your ability as a fighter.

However, it can be fun to learn the history of your art and there is nothing wrong with putting in some academic effort in studying our art.

The archetype of the Warrior-Scholar is a worthy image to attain.
