Interesting, I'm also much more interested in sweeping from closed guard rather than getting subs. Thanks, reassuring to hear that you do the same. :)
Yes it's called older than dirt BJJ

Damn bro hope you don’t have any more issues. I suffered for many years until I had surgery. Still always in pain but more bearable.
Thanks Dave! Four ruptured disks with one slipped bad enough to compress the sciatic nerve. I never want to experience that level of pain again (but likely will...); at worst I was unable to sleep for a number of nights because the pain kept my heart rate so high.
Will try to avoid the surgery as long as I can however, and feeling quite optimistic at the moment! The back gets stiff after training but no issues anymore in my daily life otherwise. But definitely need to adjust my training.

Very glad you're back bro. Those back injuries are a shitty thing. I was slammed years ago on the back of my neck and felt everything pop all the way down to my tail bone. The diagnosis was basically a sprain of the ligaments holding my vertebra together. I felt it for years, and I was at the chiropractor weekly for years. That changed when I started doing yoga daily. January 1, 2001 I made the commitment to do at least 10 minutes a day, but my usual is between 20 and 45 minutes. It has made a huge difference. I have a YogaforBJJ membership, but there are plenty of solid programs out there. I haven't been back to the chiropractor since I started...
Thanks bro! Daily habits make a difference for sure. I better incorporate more yoga into mine.

Are you familiar with the McKenzie method? Robin McKenzie’s book, Seven Steps to a Pain-Free Life, completely saved my spine after a nasty judo injury back in 2013 that took me out of training for the better part of a year (though yoga was also a big help).
Also, congratulations on your promotion to brown belt!

Sounds familiar, so I must've looked into it at some point. Will do again! Awesome that you have found help. I currently work with a really good physiotherapist, who has described me exercises (and even specific warm-ups for BJJ) that keep me busy & feel effective. But I'm always willing to listen to additional tips and perspectives.
Thanks x2!

I feel ya! I got 6. 3 in my lower back and 3 in my neck.
Jay have you tried traction for the herniation? Or perhaps heading to TJ for stem cells?

Me too, I use traction help a lot. Keeps me fairly pain free and on the mat

Honestly. I’m 39, and I have in the past. I liked doing berimbolo with partners that were smaller. Just like “spider guard”, worked that a lot in my younger days. Now I work a lot of closed guard and knee shield, try to transition to the “x”if possible. I don’t like getting stacked up, and we have a lot of former wrestlers. That pass aggressively.

I have. The only place that had a traction machine doesn't take my new insurance.

As an older practitioner, do you berimbolo? I was able to fairly easily when I was younger, not so much these days. Any one 40+ still doing them?
At 52 I still do if is necessary from both the tactical and the show off point of view. Sometimes you got to let them whippersnappers that they don't own the game lol
