I don’t want to read through all of the posts and it probably already has been said. But simply, a 2nd Degree can promote someone to black belt as long as the brown belt being promoted had a an active membership at brown for at least a year. As far as the IBJJF is concerned, the only person they can’t promote is someone that has never had a membership with the IBJJF below black. If a brown belt is promoted to black without prior membership, the IBJJF will not recognize the belt if it was given by someone that is not certified by the IBJJF as a third degree or above. The newly minted black belt is put on a probationary period for a year.
Makes sense,
And if someone being minted a new black belt has no interest in an IBJJF diploma or competing in Ibjjf or opening an academy all this doesn’t matter anyway.

Voters please note that just because someone isn't listed on the IBJJF website, it does not mean they are not a legit black belt.
It just means they have not kept up their dues.
Take that into consideration when looking into a profile.
If they paid their 2022 dues and their membership / card expires, they won't show up in the 2023 list of certified black belts until they renew.
The list is not the definitive authority on Black Belts.

Just because someone is listed on the IBJJF website, it does not mean they are legit black belts according to IBJJF:s standards (they can still be a legit BB according to our personal standards). If you're a wellknown Brazilian BB, you can sign BB forms for people you have never met. Only gringo teams (Globetrotters) get thrown out of IBJJF for less.
Also, IBJJF diplomas and the BB list on the website hides information about who promoted you and when. So nothing IBJJF gives you is worth more than the paper you send in with your promoting instructor's signature and date of promotion. Much better with a photo of that signed form than a picture of a IBJJF diploma.
Unless you need a IBJJF registration for a competition, Beltchecker is now the golden standard.

Many disputes seem to refer to the IBJJF standards and black belt list on them.
Just making sure people understand that the IBJJF is not the definitive authority.
I know many including yourself who
are not listed yet are still Legit Black
Belts.

I'm a registered Black belt, but I've never paid for the certification.

Thanks for that clarification. I have never been a member of the IBJJF, so I’m not sure how their record-keeping works. It’s odd that they don’t keep records of people who were registered in the past, even if they aren’t current dues-paying members. USA Judo lists everyone who was certified in a given year on their website, even if they aren’t current with their dues (https://www.teamusa.org/u[...]promotions).

Nobody after 2021... hmm...
To answer your question, I'm pretty sure the ibjjf record keeping isn't public information. You would think there would be some sort of records that are kept though...

They do seem to be a bit behind at USA Judo, don’t they. :) I like the public record-keeping practice, though. If we’re going to pay money to get our rank nationally (or internationally) certified, there should be a permanent record of that certification.

I've never felt the need to join IBJJF Because I have no intention on competing in one of their tournaments. I don't think IBJJF pretends to certify belts, but rather they certify eligibility to compete in IBJJF tournaments at a certain belt level. I competed in the the first nogi worlds in Los Angeles at blue belt. I don't recall having to register for anything other than the tournament. IBJJF is the governing body if IBJJF tournaments and nothing else

I think what was being referred to here in this thread was the black belt certification that they do: https://ibjjf.com/certifi[...]lack-belts
