This is how the IBJJF-poster looked in 2013, so note that the required configuration of stripes and spaces has changed since then, to at least accomodate OCD partially. Because of Lasjovino though, they couldn't go all the way, or a lot of practitioners would lose their mojo by distributing stripes and spaces evenly. Source: https://www.facebook.com/[...]349450934/
That looks suspiciously like a top-down configuration of stripes....

I was wondering this myself a couple months ago and came across the video below. I like the idea of a set of measurements because of my OCD. That being said, my coach applies stripes top down. I sent my belts to Kataaro because they give you free sewn on stripes, and they sewed them bottom up. As nice as the sewn on stripes are, they upset my OCD tendencies. They seem to be too near the bottom end of the rank bar.

According to Cleber Luciano (6th degree), the first degree stripe should be at the end of the belt. Then when you get promoted to 2nd degree, the two stripes are top down. And when you are promoted to 3rd degree, the stripes come up from the end of the belt again. I have no idea how this pattern was devised, but it would appear to be Brazilian tradition.
