Then we can conclude that I disagree with the Finnish BJJ federation on that one.

I usually refer to IBJJF equivalent standards, not exact IBJJF standards (even if that would include hefty money to me : -). One year less on blue and one more year on purple is usually equivalent enough to me when verifying, if I deem the promoting instructor trustworthy enough. Although I've never done those time deviations when I have promoted someone myself, so double standards there too, if you want to point it out. IBJJF not allowing evening out (especially on BB degrees) sounds more along the lines of making it easier to collect extra fees than having any function in quality control. Then again, IBJJF want to follow you (and get paid) every step of the way. If someone wanted to get my verification on each belt level, I wouldn't accept "but I'll stay for longer on my next belt" either, only deviations which have already been evened out on earlier belts.

My criteria for vote on a belt is actual sparring or competition footage or personal experience. So I can't verify you Johan yet. Can you provide some video of you rolling with someone you consider good.
Anything? :)

Nothing :)

I haven't been filmed while sparring for many years, as far as I can recall, except for some general filming on open mats. Guess you'll just have to ask if you know someone who you consider good who was to the Alexandre Paiva seminar in Takado (Espoo) in October, if they did some technical position sparring with me, if you're curious.

I saw people downvoting others for less than that....😅

Can you link to some examples? I've only seen revenge voters doing that.

Sounds like 99+% of Beltchecker members would be downvoted.

By your usual way of doing it, when someone didn't show the type of evidence you need for your inspection😷 you don't let go until they show it to you...so now someone is asking the same from you...Karma jitsu🥷

Here's a profile that's been disputed based on many things, but one disputer says "never seen him in any bjj event.", which is probably less than missing video proof?

What is your thought on that profile?

Thought of making a revenge vote never crossed my mind. :D But that'd take me to level I don't need to go. This is actually even entertaining and we should probably build up a super fight to some Globetrotters camp and settle this the old fashioned way. Fight to the death (or submission). :D I think we're in the same age group, as next year I'm in Masters 4? How much you weight?. :D

Not a very well formulated downvote, but I see it in the context of several local BB:s claiming something was wrong with that promotion and his skills being sub par for a BB. I haven't voted myself on that profile. If not for the locals downvoting, I would probably have upvoted him. There haven't been many instances where the local BJJ community has objected like this.

I don't travel as much these days, but might just visit a Globetrotters camp sooner or later. Right now, I'd be placed in master 3 ultra heavy (should really go down 1-2 weight classes though). I don't to trial by combat though - there are probably really competitive and athletic purple belts who could get a tap from me and I still wouldn't verify them as BB:s. Also, I have left the fighting to the death behind me. Won some, lost some ;-P

Basically, I'd happily roll with anyone who can behave respectfully and who also prioritize mutual long term health before short term high risk shit on the mats, including those I've downvoted who still understand that my vote will remain unchanged unless the circumstances around the vote changes. Wouldn't hesitate giving credit by writing "The dude is a monster on the mats though!" in a downvote :-)

I always roll in a safely manner and safety in mind and believe I behave respectfully towards people even when they are disagreeing with me.

I do plan on going for both Estonian camps next year, as I was in Beach camp 2 years in a row already.

I am actually curious, as I've often felt that people are dragging other people down due to their own insecurities, but you are at least trying to make arguments even though I disagree with some of them.

My initial promoters were not well informed on IBJJF rules as there are countless of similar promotions in place, but I also think my latter promoter does have the credentials to promote me to my current level even if we go by IBJJF rules.

But people are being promoted outside of IBJJF rules all the time. I feel competing in ADCC or MMA are just as valid places to test jiu-jitsu, there is no definite need for IBJJF which feels like is mostly there to make profit on athletes. Even my national BJJ federation is doing more for the people, sending people to competitions and organises seminars.

So far my argument looks strong as I'm getting upvoted by fellow blackbelts who I don't know by person, and by people who know me and my technical skills. I'm not defended out of courtesy.

I do point out that I choose not to downvote you just because I think people should show their level, as it would seem petty. But you should make the effort so others know what level of a person is up- and downvoting loads of people. I know level is good in Alliance from personal experience, you probably had tough belt exams for brown and black?

Let's keep two thoughts in our heads at once here - belts are in fact quite silly and so are styles ;-P
But it's akin to the old saying within sciences that "All models are wrong, but some are useful". If you are an a*hole and knock a blindfolded guy out on the chin, will he know if it was a karate punch or a kung-fu punch? If you choke him out, will he know if it was a BJJ choke or a judo choke? When the objective is the same, we'll see convergent evolution approaching the most effective way to execute the task at hand. Kind of like carcinisation in nature, where crab-like bodies have evolved independently of each other at multiple occasions. So is everything a true crab then, if all pinch you alike? It depends on how you define "crab", whether it's just the way of pinching or if it's more than that. For me in BJJ, I personally think experience and maturity also outside of the way you pinch is part of what makes it BJJ, which translates to a minimum time in the art as well as having a legit lineage. When my own instructor started training BJJ, it was just called jiu-jitsu as he recalls it and we might be getting there again, where all gi grappling is just referred to as jiu-jitsu, if objectives with it are aligned between what was previously considered different styles and lineages are mixed up enough. But as long as we see it as different styles, I think we all should make up our minds of what constitutes the style and it's degrees. If you have the pinching, does it really matter if others don't classify you as a true crab while still recognizing your pinching?

As for myself, I don't live the life where I can prioritize competing but instead just roll because I enjoy it and don't feel a need to show it to the world while still not shying away from a challenging sparring partner at camps etc. Not impossible that I upload something in the future, but not going out of my way for it.

No formal belt exams with my instructor, but he has been very clear in interviews that he only promotes those he knows personally, for what it's worth.

As Christian said - here everyone can have their own internal standard.

We are looking for common ground though. And that's why discuss.

Johan you just currently define only via
- is the black belt awarded by formally recognized black belt

So that would mean that also e.g. Bolsonaro's belt is "legit" (maybe not, he doesn't have previous history).

But yes, if you for example would know that a legit black belt has promoted (according to time guidances) their friend who has actually never stepped on a mat - it would still meet your criteria.

"Bolsonaro's belt is"
It's an honorary belt awarded by Renzo.
Not meant to be legit in any way.
Like an honorary degree given by a University for a large donation of money.

The question should be, if that leads to instant downvoting for every BB promoted by that instructor.🫣
Because of something like „promoting instructor lost competence by abuse of power“.

If I ever give an honorary belt to someone, it's going to be golden belt, ordered from China, and given with a great ceremony including trumpets and drums.

Someone not named can downvote it as it's not from a real black belt. :D
