I agree with that big time. Rolling one handed after my wrist was broken, and one-armed after shoulder surgery both enabled huge advances in my understanding of position and control.
Messed up my wrist and couldn't use my primary hand for a long time.
I learned that each hand has it's own brain basically and you can develope entire opposite gameplans and strategies and systems for each hand and side of the body your attacking. For example when you drive a car it's actually much smoother to drive with 1 hand when not going through major curves. Bad drivers who try to drive with both hands at the same time will literally send the car mixed signals back and forth.

Having a deeper look at k-guard, never played it like a guard before only used it as a transition and thought of it as such. Other than that I aim to go for a much more top focused game going forward after spending the vast majority of my grappling career as a guard heavy player…

Working on simplifying my game. Trying to use techniques that require fewer grip/placement changes this past year has made me a whole lot better. Feeling my age a little bit more these days (44) so taking the extra movement out has also been advantageous.

Currently working on weight manipulation and using more Kazushi. Strength is one of my advantages, so I learned how to apply more techniques to the reversals and sweeps. That's one thing I have been finding very beneficial in my weight class and division.

This year (and probably also all of 2024) it's all armbars. After having lost way too many favorite submissions to injuries/wear and tear over the years, this one should be good for longevity. 1000 armbars at camp open mats is my goal for next year 🙂
Love how specific this is and yet also incredibly diverse, in that there are so many armbar variations.

At my academy I’m working on finding my offense. My defense is pretty solid for my rank (4 stripe white) Also I’m old, I’m 51 but in good shape. So on average I’m 15-20 years older than most I train with.
Outside my academy I’m trying to finish up my Gracie Combatives belt. Simply because I’m a TMA and feel that all TMA whose style doesn’t include grappling should at least do the Gracie Combatives.
I’m always working on my strength training and competency with firearms and bow.
