I could use some help getting some votes to verify my Black Belt.

I was promoted 2 weeks ago.

Real Talk: Did you know it costs about 61 US dollars to register with the ibjjf if you’re in Brazil. And $400 if you’re in the United States . . .

Congrats on your promotion!

I think you're referring to getting a certification, which is closer to $500 when it's all said and done. You can still register with them as a black belt for about $35.

I think I just realized I don’t know the difference between certification and registration. :) Thank you!
Yeah, I really didn't either, when I got promoted 2+yrs ago, so don't get fooled and start jumping through all the hoops and paying all the money to the evil empire without understanding what you're paying for.

Getting certified definitely has its benefits: you have to take the rules course and pass a test on the rule set, which I found helpful. They also run a background check, so at least you know that anyone who is certified probably isn't a serial killer child molester.

But keep in mind, you can do all this stuff on your own, and just add it to your beltchecker profile, and keep a little bit of your cash out of Carlinhos' pockets.

Otherwise, with your standard membership, you can still compete, and you can still register your team.

I think the ONLY real benefit of doing the certifications is that after 6 years of shelling out money and jumping through hoops, you can sign off on blackbelt memberships.

Honestly, that's really about it.

For me, being just a regular Joe Blackbelt, running an independent, unaffiliated gym in an ocean of Gracie Barras and Royce Gracie gyms, having a certification helps with my legitimacy in the eyes of some, especially since I'm the only ibjjf-certified bb in the region.

But this is why the success beltchecker is so important: it puts the power firmly in the hands of us jiujiteiros, and not some big-ass pyramid scheme. Hopefully in the not-too-distant future, even the heaviest of mouth breathers out there will hold a verified beltchecker profile in the same esteem as an ibjjf certification.

Unfortunately, the verification in itself holds no weight. At least IBJJF claims to check lineages and evidence with the rigor of an auditor. No one (except perhaps some cold country mouth breather) dares to do the same here as they would inevitably be called names (where "police" is in the nice range) and be the target of revenge vote campaigns. There would need to be at least one down voter for every person verifying without actually having reviewed and made sure the lineage and evidence holds, which we're far from today. Otherwise, a verification is more or less guaranteed sooner or later.

It is however more transparent than a IBJJF black belt certificate, where even the lineage is kept secret for everyone but IBJJF. Also, you can always check if there is ANY criticism of the evidence or lineage on Beltchecker. If that transparency will be here in the future as well will of course depend on if more people dare ask the difficult questions, down vote when they're not answered and help make sure revenge voting is not accepted. Not too sure where we'll end up there.

Sorry to hear about Jacob's passing last month (https://www.uptospeedjour[...]cclintock/).

There has been promotions from recently deceased instructors claimed on Beltchecker before. I would really encourage you to be transparent about the circumstances and easiest would be if Gustavo Dantas could confirm that he stands behind the promotion in Jacob's name (it seems as if he's held seminars at your club earlier this year).

Now, nothing about the circumstances is mentioned on your profile, in this thread or in your promotion history. Clearly, quite a lot of people who have never met you have verified without even asking about the zero degree BB putting on your BB clearly not being Jacob (as I wrote in the last post, you'll usually get verified anyways, which is why a verification in itself isn't really worth anything). But I think you'd find that you could get verified here being totally transparent as well. Either with Gustavo supporting the promotion and/or explaining how e.g. all of Jacob's previous black belts have conferred about the promotion and hope the community accept them acting in his name on this promotion.

Thank you for the feedback. Sorry, I don't mean to misrepresent anything, but Jacob's planned promotions were this december and were carried out with his only promoted black belt.

Yes, the promotion was endorsed by Gustavo Dantas (Jacob's Coach) and Jacob's only other black belt (Jonathan Burnem) before his passing. He is the one wrapping the belt around my waist. Do you have any recommendations on how this information should/needs to be conveyed? I'm unsure if Gustavo is on beltchecker, but I could reach out.

I hope I've addressed your concerns, if not, please let me know and I will do my best.

I sent a message to Gustavo on Instagram. If he confirms he endorsed your promotion in Jacob's name, I will up vote you and relay the confirmation from Gustavo (which will hopefully be trusted by others here, or they could otherwise check with Gustavo themselves). Or if there is a social media post from Gustavo on the matter to link to plus add a screenshot as evidence.

My recommendation is that you add a comment below the BB promotion in your promotion history, where you mention something like "Promotion planned before the unfortunate passing of Jacob this November. Jacob's own instructor Gustavo Dantas has endorsed Jacob's only previous black belt student Jonathan Burnem doing the belt promotion in Jacob's name, which I also hope is accepted by the wider BJJ community".

Don’t know if it helps. But I have a text from Jacob stating he is promoting drew in Dec.

He sent it to me because I live 21 hours away and he wanted me to fly in and be there for it.

It was a terrible blow to the area and jiu-jitsu when Jacob passed. It crushed everyone.

I flew in the day after he passed. He had Drew’s belt in his desk. We contacted Gustavo right after Jacob passing happened.

If you want reach out to me on IG and I’ll share the text with you.

Drew is one of the best people I’ve ever rolled with and one of the best people I’ve ever met.

I just got a reply from Gustavo, who stands by the promotion, so I will very gladly use my verification points to support both this promotion and if Tick Tock needs any further help in the future!
