As you guys have probably noticed I have no idea how to use this website/forum. I am now updated. Thanks Sleeman. Johan I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. You are completely entitled to question my rank. That is the point of this site.
Unfortunately sarcasm does not translate through text. I will refrain from using this as my dating site and go back to grinder and probably not be back on here until I am promoted again.
My students are loyal and passionate, as am I. We have each others back on and off the mats as we have for decades. I am blessed to have them. I wish everyone felT the loyalty that my guys/girls give me and i give my teacher. We wouldnt need a beltchecker app. Sometimes we wake up and choose violence and I’m ok with it.
Keep it up Christian, beltcheckers and globe getters.
Have a great day everyone.

Justin, you mean you don't want to stick around and talk shit online about all bjj things in Ontario? Booo. Say hi to Marco, Monkey and all the old school Shah Franco guys. Good, painful memories of training there as a blue belt.

Justin, you might actually want to look into some of the other benefits of Beltchecker. If students tag you in their promotion history and you confirm their promotions, it's both like a digital diploma for them and you get statistics on your student promotions. You can also log training, injuries etc and can have a private forum for your academy (if you don't trust Facebook or dislike the way it works). I probably missed some things too.

Oh, and I think I remember seeing lesson planning, including assigning instructors to different classes.

Will do. We were all together last spring for grading for the first time in many years. Everyone has gone on to be extremely successful out of that room. Monkey Marco, myself and Antonio are all fourth degree now I may wander onto this site here in there, but it’s unlikely the way that she has gone the last year still little bit much for me. It’s gotten away from what it supposed to be. I still love it in all shapes forms, but Online bickering and black belts that can’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag spoil that quite a bit for me

I 100% think the profiles should be up to date and showing the correct rank. This makes the statistic on the page more accurate and I like them.

Also it makes him able to vote and give more points towards his students belt verification so why not just do it.

I keep my page 100% up to date and it does take minimal effort. You don't get a new stripe or belt that often in this sport.
I even keep my trainings up to date (i miss a few because I forget, but mostly I do uppdate). The training log i find less important, but I think that to should be updated for everyone serious about this page. I do ONLY log BJJ trainings on this page. So no weightlifting, running or stuff like that.

It's not unreasonable to expect somebody to spend some time as a black belt before promoting somebody else to black. Personally I don't care if the person promoting has stripes on their black belt or not (I've never liked stripes on belts in BJJ), but having a simple indicator of time served like a stripe isn't without merit.

Regardless, I don't think that merits an internet flamewar, especially as like Christian has established, the profile in question is technically inaccurate (given it says no stripes when there should be four). I get that students can be protective of their instructor's reputation, but it doesn't cost anything to be polite.

It also doesn't cost anything to just update your profile either.

"Spend a little time at black belt before promoting anyone" seems like a slippery slope to taekwondo town to me (no offense to taekwondo enthusiasts).

You're right, we should be polite, but we should also check some belts... because we're on... beltchecker.

I agree that we should be wary of specific limits on when a black belt can promote other black belts. As we've discussed on here before, being forced to stay in potentially shitty business relationships with a suitably anointed black belt, purely to get those essential stripes, is no bueno.

However, I think black belts being able to IMMEDIATELY promote other people to black belt is a direct taxi ride to Taekwondo Town. E.g., one dodgy black belt gets promoted, they promote a bunch of equally dodgy friends, the rot quickly sets in.

Having new black belts wait a bit won't totally prevent a similar situation, but at least it makes it harder.

But I think that there's a strong consensus on the 2 stripe thing. Is it unreasonable to just try and adhere to that?

I'd rather it was something like "at least two years at black" and not bother with stripes. Six years is excessive IMO, especially as the IBJJF is more than happy to shift the goal posts to keep their pyramid scheme going.

But yeah, in principle I don't have a major issue with the two stripes/six years thing.

I totally get not allowing newly promoted BB to promote people to black. I mean if and when I get there. I would want to wait to settle and grow into that rank. You know get some experience at that rank. Like in my day job I didn't start teaching people rehab principles the day I qualified. I am nearly 3 years in and now just starting to teach people in my day job. So maybe I dunno? Wait only 3 years? Wouldn't that be sufficient time to get the right amount of experience for the role? In most jobs that would be sufficient. But again wouldn't want anything to change or dilute the challenge of reaching the next belt. More applying how I felt going into a teaching role with my day job.

That response is unwarranted.

I actually have a higher level of members thanking me for advice (not only in public), with profile verifications gaining momentum after changes made. So added together with his instructor Remco being a chill and humble guy, yes, I was a bit surprised.

It will probably always surprise me too with members having the discipline to reach black belt but not the discipline to handle getting a objectively motivated dispute with calm and dignity. Or gaining the knowledge of a black belt over years of training without seeming to be familiar with the minimum time standards generally used for degrees on BB. Sure you can know about them but favor alternative, lesser time standards, but why act offended when not everyone agrees?

Responding to an action with public profanity certainly does not reflect intelligence, nor does it indicate consideration or any kind of discipline or thoughtfulness. All it accomplishes is reflecting extremely poorly on the individual and the club that he or she represents. One can disagree with discourse in a civilized manner, or one can comment negatively without resorting to personal insults. All public swearing shows is that one has a short temper.

By the picture supplied in how you are addressing the dispute of the profile. In my opinion it's mean, and aggressive.
You can address a dispute of a profile and be respectful while doing the disputing of the profile.

For example this is what I use and have never had a problem with anyone.

Sorry to down vote your profile. It is solely based on incomplete profile: either your promotion history, pictures at each belt in you promotion history, social media setup ie: Instagram, pictures in your galleries. some of these you may have filled out. but incomplete profiles are becoming a problem with many registered users and it slows down the verification process.
PLEASE message me when it is done so I can IMMEDIATELY up vote your profile. please watch the below video it will help you setup your profile.

Which part (and which dispute) are you referring to?

"Major sandbagging on the BB-degrees!" obviously wasn't received as a tongue-in-cheek compliment as it became clear that not all black belts know what sandbagging is. Hopefully, that misunderstanding is taken care of now so no one any longer thinks it's mean or aggressive.

I've only read the first page here so at the risk of missing some context in the greater discussion I just wanted to simply add here that I can absolutely vouch for Prof. Justin Bruckmann being at least 4th degree, maybe even close to eligibility for 5th at this point. I'm a 3rd degree and I took one of his seminars when he was already a black belt and I believe it was around the time I got my blue belt. We're in the same lineage, him having been taught by Prof. Shah Franco and Master Sylvio Behring.

Yay, THIS is the thread I was thinking of, when I responded on the more recent "can a purple belt promote" thread. Good discussion, worth bumping I reckon.

Getting back to the original post and the downvote discussion that prompted it, I think it gets forgotten a lot of times that there are people on this site from many countries and with many different first languages. When a comment like "sandbagging blackbelt" is made there is a large opportunity for it to be misinterpreted or misunderstood by someone whose English may or may not be at the same level as someone else. Then the same opportunity exists with the response. Many of these arguments wouldn't happen if people accepted this and erred to the side of misunderstanding instead of assuming they or their friend are being attacked any time they read something they don't understand. I can't for the life of me understand why Johan's comment would be attacked the way it was unless it was just misunderstood.
