After being away from grappling due to health issues I got back into it this past summer, starting out exclusively doing nogi the first two or so months and after that started sprinkling in gi more and more. What I noticed to my own surprise was that the added friction of the gi made my knees fel much more banged up after a training session (I’m 42, so yeah…) than after any given nogi session… whats your experience regarding this, do you notice any difference between the two?
I have a harder time with getting back into no gi if I take time away from it, because I feel I’m using way more muscle groups to keep up with the youngin’s (34 year old grappler here). I just tape my knuckles to prevent wear and tear in the gi but the gi is kind of like a little extra muscle laziness layer for me. 😂

I definitely get more injured in nogi. One of the numerous reasons I avoid nogi as much as possible. ;)

Hard training is hard on the body. I've stopped training hard, so my body is pretty OK most of the time.

I'm 46 I constantly feel banged up. I try to do mor flow rolling than anything now because the energy output a high intensity spikes my inflammation response. I try to avoid white belts or new blue belts unless I am specifically trying to pressure test myself on a new technique chain or positional nuance. That has seemed to make the journey much more enjoyable for me at this stage.

I find that doing a structured strength and conditioning program really helps with minimizing the damage as well as dealing with intensity.
