I've been training Judo 2x a week now for about 8 months at Ararat Martial Arts under Ghazaros Grigoryan Sensei (Godan) & Elyor Serikbaev Sensei (Shodan). I was recently promoted to Orange Belt. I love it , although my 45 year old body with 35 years of martial arts doesn't. LOL

It's a slight improvement, but still has a long way to go if it's ever going to return to it's pre-Olympic state that Kano would recognize as judo.

Still waiting to see what the All-Japan tournament looks like since their rules change seemed to be more in line with what we want. The International Joke Federation would have to drastically improve things to get me to care about major tournaments.

I love my dojo Judo. All the techniques you want, none of the rules you don't. 😁🥋👍

The IJF will have the final say & their recent release didn’t have leg grabs, but was OK-ish. Bringing yuko back seems pointless, but a few other changes are promising.

I disagree about Yuko. I've seen way too many dubious throws being given a waza ari, and an equal number of decent throws not scored at all. The 5 second osae komi seems a bit weird though.

Bitterly disappointed to be honest. I don't understand how so many people said leg grabs were coming back when they weren't. It's not like I need to do a blast double in judo, just a firemans carry would completely change the value of the sport to me. It remains a little side quest for me because I think the ruleset is pretty pointless.

Any US-based judoka out there pay any attention to the new ranking criteria for USJA? As it applies to us BJJ practitioners: 'Recognizing that practitioners of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), an art derived directly from Judo, train in techniques substantially similar to the techniques of Judo and acquire significant Judo skill through their training, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to allow head coaches to waive the time in grade and minimum number of classes to test for the following ranks issued by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation: a. BJJ Purple Belt up to Judo Yonkyu. b. BJJ Brown Belt up to Judo Sankyu. c. BJJ Black Belt up to Judo Nikyu. Waivers are at the discretion of the head coach and practitioners must still pass the required vocabulary, general knowledge and technique portions of the USJA senior kyu promotion system...' What do y'all think about that?
Do you guys not need competition points to progress from Kyu grade to kyu grade?

No, not necessarily. You can just go to a crap ton of classes instead.

Not in the UK, although it used to be the case that you did. You only need them from brown belt and even then, there are other ways to progress.

„Technical changes to the referee rules are as follows:

Addition of a third score yuko, in ne-waza it will be given at 5 seconds.
Use of head to throw and defend allowed except in cadet events where it will be penalised with shido.
All jacket grips and gripping under the belt to the level of the top of the inner thigh are allowed but shido will be given if using the jacket grip or under the belt to the level of the top of the inner thighs grip negatively.
Hooking the legs with the hand or arm, leg grabbing, gripping the trousers and touching the leg from the top of the inner thigh down is forbidden and will be penalised with shido.
Kumi-kata will be given 30 secs time for an attack.
Bear hug in tachi-waza is allowed except with hands or hands and arms clasped, forming a circle which will be penalised with shido.
Unintentionally leaving the contest area in tachi-waza and ne-waza will be given “Mate!”
Kansetsu-waza applied while performing throws, with high injury risks (where uke cannot escape), will be penalised with hansoku-make. For kansetsu-waza applied with techniques, with lower injury risks (where uke has the possibility to escape), performed with two hands on one arm, it will be “Mate!” and “Shido!”
Positive activity in ne-waza will be taken in consideration.
Reverse seoi-nage is allowed except in cadet events where it will be penalised with shido.“

"Positive activity in ne-waza will be taken in consideration" is what I'm most hopeful about. Obviously that's the ref's discretion though

Yeah, but I'm not sure how much different this is from how it's been until now.

Will te guruma be legal? High crotch grip looks to be within the boundaries 🤷🏻‍♂️

No. Watched a video where they demonstrated the new rules, and specifically addresses te guruma as illegal.

The vast majority of the refs don't have the newaza ability to even understand whether what's happening is proactive or not.

Anyone else feel a little more constricted when competing in judo vs BJJ?
Of course. There are more rules and more restrictions, so this makes sense.

But these rules apply to both competitors, of course.

Avoiding shidos is just a matter of understanding the ruleset; you're bound to get the hang of it with time.

No leg grabs, but you can totally grab a butt cheek now or wedgie someone. I can't wait to see the new throw variants from this one. 😂
