This situation is definitely worth watching. I understand removing someone from a school, banning them from teaching, to me that makes sense. But trying to erase the lineage? That feels off. This isn’t Back to the Future, you can’t rewrite history just because new information came to light. Two things can be true at once: you promoted him, and you wouldn’t have if you’d known who he really was. Own both truths. That’s how accountability works.

Gracie Barra Expels Instructor & Attempts to Erase His Lineage—Sparking Major Controversy in the BJJ World

Gracie Barra North America has taken the extraordinary step of permanently expelling Michael Cashman from the organization and declaring his martial arts lineage within the system “formally ceased.” The decision follows an internal ethics investigation and has ignited fierce debate within the global Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) community about whether any organization has the authority to …

This article popped up on my newsfeed as well. It's interesting to me that they're not speaking on what the initial issue(s) was/were that merited the case being brought to their "Ethics Council". Did the guy ("Cashman"... perhaps somehow connected to "Moneyberg"?) lie about some of his belt promotions, therefore perhaps nullifying subsequent promotions? Or did he do something even more horrible like accidentally wearing a non-GB gi one day?

If the former case is true, maybe ceasing his lineage is merited as it could be argued that any of his promotions of his students were invalid anyway.

Otherwise, what is GB actually going to do about it? Now that this guy isn't a part of their organization, what's stopping him from just changing the name of his school, getting a new logo and not giving any more money to Carlinhos, and then just continuing to use his otherwise legit lineage to promote his students?

In erasing his lineage, does that negate the rank of anyone he promoted? will this negatively affect anyone that was a student of his further than the removal of their coach? I'm going to assume that the dismissal has merit, despite not knowing what it was due to. It seems that a thorough investigation was conducted free of any bias, so far as what's been reported. My only issue would be whether or not parties that were not guilty, or even had knowledge of his misconduct, would be punished with him. This is a significant and severe response. A new precedent for conduct.

He defauded people for a few 100k's https://www.reddit.com/r/[...]of_gb_for/
I thought that was how the Gracie programs were supposed to work?

At least they didn't take his belt and wash it.

Seems like he'll just continue on. Nothing will ever change the fact that he is a GB blackbelt. He will have photos, certificates, etc. to prove that he is a blackbelt with that lineage.

I looked more into this and discovered that Gracie Barra invalidates every belt and rank certificate issued by that instructor, then requires those students to retest under any in-good-standing GB coach. To me, if this is true, that policy ends up punishing innocent students who were frauded by the same person.

But who cares? It puts more $$$ into Carlinhos' pockets from these students who have to retest. Do you have a link to a source for this claim? Not doubting you, just curious where you got this info.

I don't know what "Gracie Programs" you are talking about but we don't play those games in Gracie Humaita.

Generalizations are never a good approach.

Anyway I shared the reddit because the question was asked.

Never heard of this guy or his current situation with GB.

Seems sketchy on both sides.

Maybe they are upset they were not let in on the scam he was pulling.

What lineage is there to begin with? Gracie Bara seems to erase everyone's lineage by basically never providing info on the actual lineage of their academy instructors on Gracie Barra homepages, only that they're "Gracie Barra black belts", which makes it very difficult to verify those profiles on Beltchecker, if you want to verify the lineage before verifying someone.

More than a little ironic as founder Carlinho's IBJJF requires an explicit lineage of a promoting 2:nd (3:rd?) degree BB. Although IBJJF doesn't share this lineage with anyone else either, only that the person is a "IBJJF black belt", so there's actually still some consistency there, just no transparancy.

And you pay hefty money for both Barra belts and IBJJF belt registrations, but it's like "buying" a film digitally, that it can be removed from you at any time in the future. Only here, it can be removed from you also by being removed from your promoting instructor, who had all the necessary credentials only minutes ago.

Did he pull a scam? Well, some people really don't like competition ;-P

(if it's a lies-about-previous-promotions-situation, then I can agree with that subsequent promotions should be invalidated, but it also falls back on the promoting instructor really not doing the required due diligence before promoting)

Lineage is literally determined by the school you choose to attend. Most people new to bjj aren’t even aware of the different lineages in jiu-jitsu. They usually just pick a school that’s nearby, reasonably priced, and has a good vibe. If I had joined a different school, my lineage would be completely different. Just my two cents.

You can throw people off the team, you can end business relationships (end membership of affiliation, organization etc…), but „ceasing/erasing lineage“?

If the guy got his belts within GB and the y ended his membership, business relationship and threw him off the team, he still learned within the Carlos Gracie Jr. „lineage“ out of my perspective

How is it even possible to erase lineage..

If I had a student and we parted with intense animosity I can'r take back the knowledge and mat time he EARNED. It in effect is like trying to say he was never there,,,

If I hated someone and he had been given a belt I would acknowledge that and see he is no longer with my team
