Beyond terrible. Over 8 hours of stalling. Bjj will never be spectator friendly sport. Cji got patched and people are now gaming the rules and playing a game/system that will be geared to win/limit risk. Hope day is better and more action.

Also fuck flo.

I agree that both days were really boring. The only good thing is that due to time zone difference I couldn't watch it live. I fast forwarded most of the matches.

The final result seemed fishy as well. I had New Wave ahead in score, but somehow it resulted in a draw.

Day 2 had some good stuff. Great on Craig to add a 50k stipulation. The ending was fucking hilarious and such a troll moment, but the rules are rules and danaher with his 250iq should have known better. He knew once rules were read Infront of everyone, he had to tip his hat to Craig for that moment.

I thought by the rules judges could only score matches 10-9, not 10-8. Or did I miss something?

Yea the judges are the factor. It can be argued that Dorian match was 10-9. Half the match he was stuck in guard, he stopped trying to open after nearly getting his knee in a bad spot. He also wasn't attempting any subs, more being catch wrestler style and most being a dick to Ethan. But half the match was stuck in guard, so 10-9 I can see. Some can argue 10-8, sure. But the guardand near back take was decent, compared to Dorian breakdancing on Ethan's face.

Yet for Luke vs Nicky, Nicky was actively trying to sub and got lots of dominant positions (Dorian had more spots I say), so the sub attempts went a longer way.

Also the rules are similar to quintet, Giles made a post trying to win via rules.. sucks because I had it for new wave yet the rules and seeing it 10-9 vs 10-8 Dorian match really mattered.

I hated it. Watching people reach almost a great position only to let go and jump on heel hook was sad to see. I love watching Jiu-Jitsu, but this event was so bad.
This won't be popular, but leg locks have ruined spectator BJJ. The leg lock game has made everything one dimensional and most matches turn out just as you described. Once leg locks got popular it was all anybody tried to do and when people got good at defending them all you saw was two guys rolling around on the ground in a stalemate. Once this blows over and people move on to something else I hope the matches become exciting again.

I don't watch much BJJ but I tend to agree.

I thought it was pretty good. You dont get to see this many high level competitors in one event, for free. Day 2 was also a lot better than day 1. If both days would have been like day 2, I dont think people would complain a lot. Craig is trying to grow our sport and he is willing to put a lot of money on the table as well. Gordon Ryan inadvertetly helping in getting more publicity to the event by bringing up the controversial decision.

Next year Craig is going to compete with ADCC again, so Im interested to see what he is going to cook up that time.

Honestly, for me, pretty much every Jiu-Jitsu event save WNO events, or Quintet have the same problem. They're just too long. I mean if you watched all of CJI 2, you're going to be sitting there for 12 hours total. I can't think of anything I'd like to do for 12 hours. And that's streaming at home. If I had been in the auditorium, that would have been pure torture.

I don't remember the last time we sat down and watched BJJ matches unless we knew someone that was in them. Luckily, our teammate that we usually watch is a pretty active grappler and boredom is not a problem in his matches. But most of them are quite boring to watch for people who train. I can't imagine how painful it would be for someone that didn't know what they were looking at. Between the long boring matches and officiating that often leaves you wondering if you watched the same match the referee watched I'm surprised any of these shows are financially viable.

I enjoyed it, especially day 2. Some awesome moments, Sarah Galvao's takedown off the wall to back take, beautiful.

I wish a gi version of this happened though. It's incredibly hard to pass the guard at this level without grips. Now that leg locks are getting neutralized, passing game coming back, but without the gi, not many successful passes in this tournament.

Make matches shorter (5 min) and sub only. Add sudden death overtime.
I honestly hate sub only matches. By far the most boring fights I've ever seen were sub only. I truly prefer points tournaments.

Don’t play footsies for 8 minutes and not get the sub. Quintets are a fun but shorter rounds and cash for subs will hopefully let us see some cool shit in the future.

Cash for subs and cash for points. Total points in the match or point differential should either get people moving for the $$$>

Interesting thought. I think earning a payout for points scored even in a loss would really cut down on stalling. I could see that getting gamed pretty easily, so the loser would have to get paid substantially less but still get a reward for working towards dominant positions even if it didn't work out in the end.

Maybe do it like wrestling and have minor decision, major decision, and tech fall.
I think BJJ rulesets could learn A LOT from how rules are structured for Folkstyle/Freestyle matches. Including the emphasis on forward action and willingness of refs to penalize passivity. A BJJ version of the shot clock would be a great addition.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. MOST sub only rule sets at best just incentivize the worst kind of meta gaming and at worst, water down a lot of the martial applicability of BJJ. Why worry about passing the guard or sweeping to top position when you can just throw up 50 terrible ankle lock attempts or leg entries that inevitably fail, but score points in the eyes of judges?

There are ways to do sub only matches in an exciting way, but most rule sets don't apply a framework that rewards the correct kind of action if the match is decided by judges.

There's arguments to make for both sub only and points, what it ultimately comes down to though, is how much players are willing to take risks. Any ruleset can be "gamed" to edge out a win without too much risk. This is obviously a killer to entertainment value.

WDYT If there would be a sub bonus that would DECLINE with time? I think that would be an interesting incentive. E.g. 50k if you sub within 1st minute, 40k in 2nd, 30k in 3rd, 20k in 4th, and when the 5th minute starts till the end the sub bonus is 10k 😆

That's a very interesting idea! I believe that would really encourage aggressiveness and activity. Maybe making it more spectator friendly too.

The declining paycheck has been done. I don't remember the event, but we watched it several years ago.

While I liked seeing how the team tournament would play out, I wasn't too fond of it by the end. If they were to go back to the CJI1 tournament format and have the declining sub bonus, I feel like it'd push the pace and create more action. I'm also a fan of stalling penalties/shot clock but we can't have everything now can we? ;)

Stalling penalties / shot clock can and has horribly backfired (e.g. judo) because it creates a viable strategy to play for (less) penalties which usually is helluva boring to watch.
