This is good: https://www.youtube.com/w[...]Mq1u3Y7zzc (Tim Kennedy - Closing the Distance)
Good vid Jorgen...He is Gracie Humaita so he for sure has trained the self defense program like the rest of us. I know alot of former and up and ccoming mma guys that teach and train the program regularly. It all boils down to choice or even just being at the academy when the fundamentals are being trained. I am going to go teach in a few and tonight is a fundamentals night so takedown ,self defense and basics.

"training sport is more than enough training to make someone able to handle themselves fine on the street."
This is the truth. Sport jiujitsu and the points system are designed to reward methods that would dominate in street situations - takedown, sweep, mount, submit.

Sure you can improve overall with striking classes etc, but the lack of striking doesn't compromise the incredible advantage that sport jiu jitsu has over almost all other martial arts.

It's not the lack of striking it's the lack of getting struck that is the problem. Noone know how they will react when eating punches, elbows etc.
When I was coming up a legit black belt could do it all self defense, sport, vale tudo.. now a legit black belt is a sport only black belt.
funny thing is the folks who without which we'd all still be doing kata are telling us that training with punches is necessary but now everyone is an expert and don't want to listen to the actual reason (exponents) bjj became popular in the first place.. folks are suffering from short memories
