Why would a black belt take a lower rank in IBJJF, in my case 1 year away from 1st Degree. But I am actually a 3rd degree? I know why getting the professor certified and school certified. But why get certified by rank?

There's probably no reason to do so, other than waiting 6+ years and paying hundreds of dollars to be able to sign off on other black belts trying to register for membership.

But you can sign up your students to compete if you get the professor/academy certification. They just wouldn't recognize your actual rank. If you haven't been paying the membership fees for 9+ years you can't get them to recognize you rank.

Black belt (professor) certification and academy registration are two different things.

You can't sign off on new black/brown belt registrations until you're a registered (certified) 3rd degree.

You can register your academy without the certification.

They will only recognize your degrees on your black belt from the date you first certify, so in your case your actual rank will not be recognized.

All of this is stated in their rule book. If you'd like, I can link it for you.

FWIW, I don't think the certification is worth it. I originally got certified because I misunderstood some things, and I continue to re-certify so that I can help people sign up to compete in this stupid pyramid scheme.

There are some positive consequences to certification though; I found the rules course to be helpful, and I like that they do a background check, but I could also just do these on my own.

I'm a 4th but with IBJJF I'm just a 3rd because I lapsed on my dues.
If you're signing off on student memberships, at least one a year, that's another way to "prove activity", and it should count for your next stripe.

Either way they do not allow us to catch up on dues that have not been paid.
They penalize us by not recognizing the degrees that we actually have.
I'll be a fifth degree in 2028 and IBJJF will only recognize me as a fourth that year.
Royler even tried to talk to his cousin to get it all sorted but they stand by their rules and are adamant that no one can just catch up on their dues missed.

My best advice to anyone is they keep paying their dues or suffer the consequences me and many like me have suffered.
If they do not plan on having guys in IBJJF events then they don't have to worry about it.

Edited because I forgot to mention that when I got promoted to 4th Degree and sent them an email with the photos to see if I could correct my profile they congratulated me on my promotion and still denied me. LOL

wow?!?? So the best I could do is sign up students for the next 7 years to blue or purple? If I have a brown or black belt they have to go under another school?

You would have to get another IBJJF Certified Black Belt (teammate) or in your case Red and Black Belt to sign off.

Yes I have that option anyway. Is there a difference in IBJJF usa and International? Someday I might retire in South East Asia, because my wife is from there. Could those IBJJF organizations make someone "start over" again?

No difference that I know of as they are pretty much worldwide at this point.

Well I guess it might be better to get started and take your lumps. If you were going to play their games.

The only difference as far as it functions, at least in my experience, is that if you're registered with ibjjf usa, you won't be able to sign off on students who register with ibjjf Brazil, for example.

I was planning on helping out some friends from Canada, and I have a student who resides in Europe, and I'm not able to register them with my team. So stupid.

AFAIK, you shouldn't have do start over with your degrees, as they're registered with ibjjf international.

I guess when someone expands to another county they would have to open an academy it that country to sponsor students there.

That seems to be the case, yes.
