What to do with Nogi Ranks?

So basically if we don't do it the same way as you we're pricks. Is that a general feeling you have about all people or just BJJ people? Pretty sure I can guess the answer to that one......
Not what I said. I don't promote or demote anyone, so doing it the same way I do it is not a valid criteria. What I said was that you are a prick if you are going to strip someone of their belt solely because they came from a different gym.

I have no feelings at all about any of those belts. I don't do judo or LL and avoid no gi as much as possible. But 10P is still a BJJ gym; it says it right in the logo on the website. As far as the other disciplines go, I still say that the biggest consideration is ability and knowledge. An armbar is an armbar regardless of which art you are doing. Does that mean a judo black belt should be able to walk into a BJJ gym and get their black belt on day one just because they wreck everyone in the room? No. Does it mean they should have the opportunity to advance through the BJJ belts at an expedited pace? Yes.
OK, so in light of your understanding of my initial question, perhaps it's better to ask how 10P ranks should be treated. While yes, I agree with you that they are a BJJ gym, they do have a different ranking system, and if I were to go to a 10P gym, I would not be recognized as a black belt because I'm not a 10P black belt.
There's a good breakdown/discussion on the 10P system here: https://ringsidereport.ne[...]explained/
So, from my point of view, in the example I gave of a 10P purple belt showing up at my gym, and even though I didn't choose to go this route, I wouldn't be demoting him but rather asking him to put on an appropriate belt - just like if a Judo practitioner were to show up with his Judo belt. I decided that I wouldn't do that though, after educating myself a bit more on the 10th Planet system. :)

Coach here who trains both people who only care about jiu-jitsu and people who pretty much do jiu-jitsu as a side quest for their MMA carreer, plus a few who only care about no gi.
If they are here only for the jiu-jitsu, I will require them to be recognisable as their rank in both gi and no gi.
If they are here only for no gi, or because they are doing it for MMA, I will promote them even without them ever wearing a gi, and I will give them a belt on promotion day.
For those who one day will decide to put a gi on, they will wear the belt that they have been awarded and it's their problem to make up for the missing parts.
The belt is a ranking system, not just a vestiary item. If they are awarded a rank, instead of a piece of paper I will give them a piece of cloth.
I've been to tournaments where my athletes went against guys who fought in a certain rank in the no gi division, and then in a lower rank in the gi division; my solution was to corner as usual except I would loudly call "sandbagger" the opponent. "Let's go man, control the knee of the sandbagger! Don't let the sandbagger win the grips! Hold the mount on the sandbagger!"
Somebody found it funny, somebody didn't.

Fair enough.
However, this is extremely common in the community. Most big name gyms will ask you to wear a different belt if you are a visiting black belt. Been told MANY times that when I've called ahead of time to see if I could drop in.

So do I understand it correctly, that the „2nd degree blackbelt can promote black belts rule“, doesn’t apply for 10 th planet BJJ black belts, as there aren’t any degrees on black belts in their system?
It’s just an IBJJF rule, correct?

From what I gather, each 10p bb promotion has to be approved by Eddie Bravo.
The 2nd degree "rule" isn't exclusively an IBJJF rule as that's been covered in multiple threads on here already.

Was thinking the same thing. Although I've heard of this happening, I've yet to experience it myself.

Am I remembering wrong, that originally also for IBJJF 2 stripes were enough to promote someone to black belt, and only later, when they started pushing "provisional grades" and all the nonsense, it became 3 stripes?

You need a 3rd degree or higher to sign off if your first application is at brown or black. Then you are “provisional” for a bit.

For years I've been half-joking, half totally serious regarding nogi belts: what do these guys do with their belts when they're not getting ranked? How embarrassing would it be to have to teach a purple belt how to tie his own belt? It was all fun and games until this exact scenario actually happened to me... The other night, we had a "10th Planet purple belt" who presumably was leaving his gym and starting to train at our gym; I'm not exactly sure what the situation is, as I haven't had a conversation with this individual yet. He asked me what belt to wear in our gi class, as he admitted that he was a "nogi purple belt". I told him to just wear the belt he was awarded, as I know his instructor and trust his legitimacy within the 10th Planet "system". I shit you not, we had to have a couple of our white belts try and walk him through the belt-tying process. Dude looked like a white belt had taught him how to tie his belt, too: knot all cockeyed and tied right up below his nipples. At some point during class, he gave up entirely on trying to tie the belt and just left it on the mat until the end of class. Now, I can't blame the guy for not being a good sport: he's doing the thing and giving it a shot. Ultimately, it's not his choice what belt he was awarded. Furthermore, he moves on the mat like I would expect a purple belt to move, just with no concept of gripping and the slow, grinding nature of "gi BJJ". So, I'm a little unsure of what to do with this guy, long-term. For the first few years I was training, there was no such thing as "nogi belts", and the 10th Planet "system" hadn't been invented yet; everybody just trained both with the gi and without the gi on, so this is still the lens through which I view rankings. I don't award belts to my students who choose to just train nogi. I have a handful of students who train exclusively nogi and I have a conversation with these individuals, explaining to them that I don't give nogi belts. All they have to do is demonstrate proficiency in the gi and all this requires them to do is to train in the gi maybe ten percent of the time. If you never train in a gi, then wtf do you need a belt for? Anyway, I'm about 90% sure I'm just going to roll with it and let this guy experience the brand-new sensation of wearing ancient Japanese civilian attire through the eyes of a beginner, while wearing a purple belt. He'll figure it out along the way, I suppose. But what would y'all do? I'm curious what other BB's who rank their students would do in this situation.
I had a decent No Gi phase and trained at a MMA gym for about a decade, but a purple belt that can’t tie a belt. Bro.
Just roll with it.
Grips and learning the nature of Gi Jiu Jitsu is a necessary part of becoming a black belt 100%, but he has time. It’s not a huge deal though.

Agreed. He just did his first spider guard last night lmao.
Also, his belt is at least 1 size too small, which makes the belt tying curve that much more steep.
He's being a good sport about it though; he really wants to learn all this stuff and it won't take him long to catch up.

Grips are easy to learn and the belt is just there to hold your lapels in. At least the dude can roll. That's really what matters. I know some guys who train mainly with the gi, but never really utilise the gripping. Under hook/over hook and clinch game just comes naturally to them. And I can't blame them. I used to be a gi-only guy for the first 7 years before starting my 10th Planet journey. These days I mainly use hooks and clinching as I find it more reliable and of course easier on the fingers and forearms.
On the flip side, there have been a bunch of people coming to our gym from gi-focused places and they get their arses whooped by our blue belts, some times even by white belts. Even if they have prior no-gi experience.
But, I do want my students to be good at both gi and no-gi and in my books you get promoted faster by doing both, because you'll actually improve faster on the mats.

I don't think this is the case. 2nd degree 10th Planet black belts can promote to black. Eddie will of course know about the promotions at some point but his approval isn't required beforehand.

This appears to be correct. I was under the impression that they don't do bb degrees, but apparently they do.
From what I'm reading (10p forums, 10p affiliate sites, etc) each bb promotion still has to be approved by Eddie Bravo or they risk losing affiliations, branding, etc.
Despite the claims that 10p bjj is totally different than mainstream bjj, everything I'm finding out seems to not support this claim. Everything they're doing seems pretty standard.
