Hey everyone,

Just looking for a bit of advice from anyone who's been through something similar.

Has anyone had a scapholunate ligament reconstruction, a four-corner fusion, or even a total wrist fusion?

Unfortunately I've got some fairly significant wrist degeneration and instability from an old injury that's caught up with me over time (not BJJ-related), and I'm currently weighing up my surgical options.

I'd love to hear from anyone who's had one of these procedures:

* What surgery did you have?
* How was the recovery?
* Were you able to return to BJJ?
* How much strength and range of motion did you lose?
* Did it affect your game, and if so, how did you adapt?

Any experiences, good or bad, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have SLAC wrist myself. I declined the surgery and just roll through the pain. I strongly encourage you to look at the drawbacks of these surgeries. They often focus on pain relief while sacrificing range of motion which, for me, is an unacceptable compromise because they would not just affect my BJJ but also my ability to manipulate a firearm (I am a hunter and I carry a handgun daily).

Unfortunately, I had to accept that this was the cost of training as long as I did and now my primary contribution to the art is teaching. I still roll with my students and I still compete on occasion but the hard truth is I have to tap a lot more.

Hey Josh,
I had a pretty bad TFCC ligament tear on the outside of my wrist where my ulna bone and wrist connect (not originally a BJJ injury). I ultimately had 2 surgeries. The first the surgeon said he sculpted it and cleaned it out. About 3-4 months after the surgery and physical therapy it started hurting again and just felt wrong. I went back and that guy told me there was no tear. So I went to another surgeon who said I did have a tear and went in and put a permanent suture in there to clamp the ligament back together. It worked great. For probably 1-2 years I favored it and had pain from time to time but for the last 6-7 years I’ve had almost no problems with it…unless something extreme happens like a wrist lock or if I’m gripping someone’s Gi real tight and my hand gets really forcefully stripped, then it might be sore for a few days. Totally glad I had the surgery, full range of motion restored, I just wish I went to the correct surgeon first rather than second. If you’re near SoCal I can recommend a guy. Hope you heal up.
