Why do you verify without actually beltchecking on Beltchecker?

Why do you verify without actually thoroughly belt checking on Beltchecker? What good does that do the BJJ community?
Claimed 2022 Moreira and Palhares BB Samuel Lalrozama ("Sammy") was just 225p from getting his BB verified and had it not been for a single picture being questioned as photoshopped, I'm sure he could had used the Beltchecker verification as proof of being a
legit BJJ BB when attracting new students to his academy.
There has been several legit BB:s who have used their position for doing far from noble things, even though they risk their reputation and what comes from all the years behind their belt. If the BB isn't legit to begin with, a person who has been verified by the Beltchecker community doesn't have this "extra cost" at all, besides from (I'd like to think) all the years of disciplined training in itself hopefully increasing self control and at least lessening the risk that the person turns out to be a predator (in the bad sense of the word).
So why risk being an enabler instead of just not voting?

Is he a fake black belt?
The info provided checked out

He is also listed on the IBJJF website.
Please enlighten everyone on how much more we have to dig?
Also fill us in on how you know his promotion is illegitimate?
I'm not calling Joe Moreira are you?

Both Moreira and IBJJF are belt checkers by themselves (and, it seems, quite sloppy ones at times), rather than (always) acting as promoting instructors and taking responsibility for the promotions. So a diploma from Moreira, even if real, really should not be taken as evidence of him ever having ever met or knowing who tf Sammy is. Apparently, even BB:s actually awarded by Moreira previously have been the subject of controversy.
In any case, here is the picture provided by Sammy as evidence of Moreira having promoted Sammy to BB in 2022. While showing an entirely different academy than where the promotion is said to have taken place. An academy which probably does not exist in real life, considering I get no hits on Google lens and there is a logo shown directly on the jigsaw mats (why would you even have jigsaw mats in such an expensive looking academy anyways?). Also looks a little too perfect with no visible wires going into the ceiling lamps.
Also, the direction of light on Sammy and Moreira does not match, if you look at the shadows. A quick Google lens search also reveals where the Moreira picture (at least the top half) comes from - right from the front page of Joe Moreiras homepage! You can also see that the AI has mistakenly cropped the shoulder patches, thinking they were a background element, as well as the visible patches not being faithful to reality but having AI artifacts.
Obviously got 775 validation points of you fooled - this is why I have more or less stopped voting just based on images and verifiers (IBJJF, Moreira etc) who could have been duped by being less thorough than an actual belt checking Beltchecker member. I was the only one who placed a down vote on Sammy (enough to make him realize it was game over? although I got the tip from another member, asking if I too thought the image was fake).
Had Sammy been just a little more skilled with AI or Photoshop, the photo could have been indistinguishable from an authentic one. And before we know it, we'll be at a point where it's just at a simple prompts distance even for an AI amateur. So once again - images and diplomas from other verifiers (IBJJF, Moreira etc) is no longer reliable evidence. With no obvious signs of being fake, I would not down vote, but that makes it even more important that others don't up vote just to be nice or get votes in return.
We as a community have built up a body of profiles verified by pictures before it became this easy to fake, so let's make that count as an important basis for future verifications, when someone verified by pictures when it actually ment something really knows who someone is and can vouch for their promotions.

You could also have checked the information on his academy's FB-page, to see if there's a matching post at the date of the promotion and if it has a like by the promoting instuctor(s). In this case (https://www.facebook.com/[...]t3bwEL5Lkl), the post about a black belt was from 2024, not 2022. In English, it says the promoting instructor was 2:nd degree BB Bryan Daly (can't find any reliable information on this specific Bryan Daly, which is awfully convenient forSammy), who is said to be under Moreira and Palhares lineage (those two thus not promoting instructors at all, only lineage).
Translating the indian text below, it says the belt was awarded on April 10:th 2024 (not in 2022) and in the presence of Moreira and Palhares. Only when I check the same date on Moreira's FB-timeline, he was actually in Australia at that time! Very far from India. When the post is made on the 15:th of april, he already has the black belt registered with IBJJF, which seems awfully fast (unless that picture was added later).
As promotion evidence in his FB-post, he provided the attached image, which is supposedly Bryan Daly (as it is not Moreira or Palhares). Does the image look familiar? Remember this was pre AI, so would you have up voted a profile showing this image together with a claim that this is 2:nd degree BB Bryan Daly, under Moreira and Palhares? Without really checking that the lineage and Bryan's degree was accurate? Or that there even was a guy named Bryan in the picture?

He must have hacked Moreira's website and added himsel on there as well.
I'll leave the investigation to you as you have that kind of time on your hands.

Benjamin Franklin was probably the one who put him on there, as well as in IBJJF:s registry.
Not saying someone took a bribe, just that when you get a source of income where you get a lot of money with very little work, you tend to not put in more than very little work. So sub par evidence will be accepted, especially if you did a little promotion history laundering along the way. Actually evaluating someone for a belt takes time, so there are ever so many fully legit BB:s who are ready to put a signature on an IBJJF application if given a believable enough promotion history (just make some claims with some dead or otherwise of the grid instructor or just make one up from scratch). Not taking responsibility as being the actual promoting instructor if the person is later put into question, as they "just signed off". Besides IBJJF being totally non transparent with who signed off for whom and as long as it's not bad for business, they won't give any consequences for taking the duty of "signing off" easy. And even with that sad state of things, IBJJF is seen as an authority in belt verification.
Btw, here is a picture which Sammy uploaded as purple belt promotion evidence, if anyone wants to practice at connecting the dots (or at least learn not to be so quick at verifying unknowns).

Very sus.
So the purple belt promotion photo looks real, but the supposed black belt promotion (the 2024 fb one) is the same photo but with the belt edited black + blurred background. Whoever the promoter guy in them is, pulling a stunt like this would severe ties for sure.
The Moreira picture is hilariously bad Photoshop work.
I don’t believe he’s a Luta Livre bb either, since that ”photo” is so obviously edited as well.
Somebody has been signing him off to IBJJF etc. though. This is not awfully hard to achieve without real legtimacy however, one just needs to know a 3rd degree bb in the system willing to click a few buttons online.

Has anyone heard of Bryan of Ukrainian Top Team, 1:st degree BB in 2020 (so 2:nd-3:rd degree now?)? Very specific, so I guess Ukrainians would have heard of the guy if Sammy's claimed long term coach is for real. https://www.facebook.com/[...]1559641552
Wearing a 4:th degree BB here, supposedly in 2022 (but still mentioned as 1:st degree) https://www.facebook.com/[...]rbks3LeHFl
Elsewhere described as from the US. E.g. here, together with a Deepak (not THE Deepak?). https://www.facebook.com/[...]BVZdG9fbil
Same guy that was shown on Sammy's pics from 2019, wearing a brown belt, so an awfully quick 1:st degree BB. Also same guy that was Photoshopped into wearing a black instead of brown belt while promoting Sammy to black belt.
Where he's mentioned as Bryan Daly from the US. Only one I find any trace of is a brown belt Bryan Patrick Daly competing in 2013. And a no-show loss in 2025. Also IBJJF registered as a 2nd degree under Luiz Palhares Jiu-Jitsu Europe (Sammy is the only other one registered under that academy), so it would fit, but seems impossible to find much more. https://www.facebook.com/[...]TGmFmpJiNl
Gone off the grid together with the elusive James Nakamura?

Now I'm picturing the _real_ BJJ Dirty Dozen (or Suicide Squad), compromised of disgraced, gone-off-the-grid black belts coming together to form a supergroup forced onto black-ops missions for refurbished Beltchecker cred.
Who should be the captain though... Randy "Lasu" Rogers or the immortal Grandmaster Deepak Rao?
I think Sammy made the team as well.

Gets really weird with this American/Ukrainian top Bryan guy involved... nice digging!
He's clearly rocking 4 degrees on the black belt in the "brown belt promotion" photo, although Sammy writes he's 1st degree. Also for somebody so insecure as registering their black belt with every federation they can, are a few blurry rolling pics the best promotion photos you can get?
And only now I noticed the crudely added 2 degrees to Bryan's "black belt" (brown in original photo) in Sammy's older black belt graduation pic.
How about his Luta Livre lineage? Detailed here:
https://lutalivreindia.bl[...]neage.html
"Ryan Peterson: Prof. Ryan currently heads the international federation and is a 3rd degree black belt in Luta Livre ( Hugo Duarte). He is also a 4th degree black belt in BJJ (Augusto Galeb Brazilian Academy) Brazil, 4th degree black belt in Japanese Jiu Jitsu & Self defence. (Japan), 1st degree black belt in Taiho Jutsu (Northen Ireland) and a Brown belt in Judo (Phil Takahashi)
Samuel Lalrozama: A black belt with a professof title under Prof. Ryan and also is a black belt in BJJ under Grandmaster Joe Moreira and Master Luiz Palhares. He is also a veteran MMA fighter, coach and official with a record of being the first Indian to act as centre referee in an amateur MMA world championship. He is also a certified international Muaythai coach accredited by the Ministry of culture and education, Thailand. He is instrumental in training various natoinal, international and professional champions and fighters."
Also has almost exactly the same photo that looks very much edited with Mr. Peterson, but this time he has added a background with a sofa and a guitar??
On a IG post of Luta Livre Canada, at least Hugo Duarte acknowledges Sammy's Luta Livre bb: https://www.instagram.com[...]eCtyWiTyA/

These guys seem to be involved, it's Ryan Peterson and apparently a few other guys based in Canada: https://www.instagram.com[...]fbushido1/
"We are a team of Luta Livre, BJJ, traditional Jiu Jitsu, Judo and Wrestling instructors who have banded together to bring Luta Livre Canada the world." (sic)
Affiliated with Moreira regarding BJJ and Hugo Duarte regarding Luta Livre. On most gi pics Mr. Peterson is wearing a Kyushin-ryū jiujitsu(?) belt but he seems to be blackbelted in multiple arts.
Duarte is at least acknowledging the claimed Luta Livre ranks.
The Luta Livre Canda HQ(?) looks like a super small basement space with just a few pieces of puzzle mat (where Duarte is seen training and promoting). Not an issue to me, I used to train at a friend's garage in space almost as tiny during covid, but signals that the organization is not very large.

Is this IBJJF membership card authentic? Would "Ukrainian top team" (with an American head instructor?) really be sloppy enough to register as "Ukranian top team"? Not impossible that it's the level of rigor you get from IBJJF after paying hundreds of dollars for registering the team with them, but would still had been spotted and corrected by the time team students got their memberships, I'd think.
I too noticed the sofa photo looks like it's from the same photo session as the luta livre pic, where the light doesn't seem to match on the guy to the right. But why edit in a blurry sofa in the background? Similar light as on the Moreira pic, so perhaps the sofa is the real original background of all these pics.
As for the cropped diploma, it's from USFBJJ, which basically seems to be Joe Moreira selling you a certification diploma for some dough. The diploma says "The following are witnesses to the certification of the above named as Black Belt in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This day is officially recognized, their achievement officially noted". So yet another clever way of being able to distance yourself at will and not having been the actual promoting instructor. Not even having certified actually, only signing on having been "witnesses to the certification". And not disclosing if there has been any effort in checking the applicants qualification or if any submitted evidence has been manipulated.
Have to agree with Tatu on the absurdity of not bothering to document with any actual verifiable (non faked) promotion photos or photos with your listed promoting instructors (at least in presence of at the BB promotion) but pouring out hundreds of dollars to make sure to basically get belt certifications from every possible organization. Where I would guess that once you've duped one into certifying, thereby laundering a potentially fraudulent BB promotion, you could use that to facilitate getting certified by others. Or simply send in the same falsified information to all of them. If you are inclined to post falsified promotion photos on FB and Instagram for the world to see, simply falsifying a promoting instructor signature would be incredible easy and more difficult to spot than manipulated photos of persons. Especially since once approved, IBJJF and the likes aren't transparent who signed as promoting instructor. The person who the signature belongs to probably doesn't get any notification either that their signature has been used to certify a new black belt. Or the signature is real but they have been duped into "signing off". There are a lot of legit senior BB:s who are either dead or impossible to get hold of, so there is basically no risk at all falsifying diplomas from and promotion pictures with them. Perhaps there's not even a single picture of how they look online, so the person wishing to fake a belt could just dress their own cousin or friend in a gi and an appropriately striped black belt and have their promotion picture taken. Yet more reasons not to vote too quickly on Beltchecker.

The card is authentic, since he's also found in the database as a black belt, which requires certifying the belt (a much more laborious process). I also have an IBJJF card as a competitor simply by paying $45 annually and having our affiliation head professor signing it off every year. So a card is very easy to get. The way they (very cheaply) produce the cards makes all photos of them look 'shopped though.
As far as I know, one can register an academy/team with pretty much any name as long as you get your professor in the system to approve it.
Appears like there at least used to be a Ukrainian Top Team with a Bryan in Kiev pre-war, his email is visible in the academy event poster for contact purposes. (Many expats who worked in the city got called back when the situation got rapidly worse.) Entirely possible he has been traveling to Mizoram and trained with Sammy there (as the few authentic looking photos suggest), probably even grading him to purple as a brown. But the whole promotion business gets super murky with blatantly edited evidence and conficting dates/ranks reported.

Someone in Luiz Palhares Europe Association signed off on him on IBJJF. Listed as a BlackBelt under Palhares Team.
Him and Bryan Daly are the only two black belts registered under "Luiz Palhares Jiu-Jitsu Europe", and Daly as a 2nd degree, so it's likely Daly as the managing prof of Luiz Palhares Jiu-Jitsu Europe/Ukrainian Top Team signing off members. And there's one higher up in the Palhares/Moreira organization who has signed off Daly.
This whole thing wouldn't be too out of the ordinary without the 'shopped photo evidence. Somebody heading a team far off has found an affiliation to sign his belts off, without perhaps really training with them (or perhaps, in the art in general) as much as we'd like them to. Seems to happen quite a bit. The black belt would still be technically "legit" as somebody with enough pedigree has officially approved it.

Looks like "Bryan" was wearing a brown belt in 2019. For all I know he could have forgot his black belt and borrowed it though. We really don't have all the details.
