Awesome thanks will do! I just send a ticket asking how to get our sport represented on their platform.
I just did the same; hopefully multiple requests regarding jiu-jitsu at once has some impact. I'll post their response here if I receive one.

Again, BJJ and submission grappling are already covered under the Judo program,
specifically their Freestyle Judo program.

Oh sorry! I missed your clarification on that. Thank you for pointing that out.

And this is why I try to avoid ever putting pictures of my kids on social media,
and why I have not allowed my kids to have social media accounts.

"Social Media Creeps" could probably not only be its own massive thread but site sadly, but would be a good area for folks to post their heads up. I know Women's Grappling Network shares the profile info of people that send inappropriate messages to kids.

Just wanted to say thanks everyone for the really strong conversations on this topic. I appreciate it and this list of orgs the that support background checks. I didn't know about the AAU, very cool, although since it doesn't list BJJ on their registration forms, guessing 'wrestling' would be the closest in registration (although my wrestling is sub par at best). Thanks, Shawn
Shawn, will you get this certification?

I contacted the AAU/USA directly and spoke with them about my own situation. I teach/coach "practical" self-defense -- effectively a blend of other martial arts that they DO list -- and coach and compete in BJJ. As was mentioned previously in this thread, they directed me to sign up as a "non-athlete" (coach) in their Judo program and to get "extended benefits." They said that typical submission grappling/BJJ is covered under the Judo heading, as long as we aren't doing full MMA-kind of stuff. This led to me learning a bit about freestyle Judo, which was pretty interesting, too.
Anyway, they did the background-checky-stuff and put me through a short-but-interesting online coaching course. It had some good points in it that were important for me to remember (having been coaching for about 25 years now). I put the approved membership card image up on my beltchecker image gallery.
It is/was a great way to get a good amount of general liability insurance, and a lot less expensive than other ways I have gone about it in the past. I am very grateful for the suggestion.
