Bio
My martial arts journey started in 1992, at 40 years of age, with Yuishinkai Karatejutsu. In 1996, when BJJ first came to Sweden, I trained both disciplines for some years, but then focusing only on BJJ. After the first trip with my son Johan Nyh, to Brazil in 1997, we started to teach at our home academy, which we both have enjoyed doing ever since. Not much for competing myself, unlike some of our students. At our Academy, BJJ section, we are talking about three possible BJJ “careers”, competition, coaching, instructing and plain physical exercise. I focus mainly on instruction and physical exercise. My main instructor in Brazil (now moved to the US) since year one has been Alexandre Paiva of Alliance BJJ, who have visited Sweden and Finland many times over the years. I have visited Alexandre’s academy in Rio de Janeiro a couple of times. Combining normal life with regular visits in Brazil, to train with my own main instructor, is however quite challenging, which really shows in my irregular promotion intervals. I am however very happy that the quality of BJJ in Sweden today is on a much higher level than when I first started training. As a teacher of BJJ, I'm also proud to say my students have an understanding of BJJ which in many ways surpasses my own at their belt level and are developing their own personal styles and specialities, which deepens my own knowledge. Myself, I would say I have specialized in helping students apply systematic and analytical thinking to BJJ. The aim is to better recognize, defend and apply techniques and strategies they have never seen before as well as filling in blanks when learning something new, and adding details and remarks to techniques the students find on the internet. Figuring out details beyond the face value of a technique and adapting it to their personal strengths and limitations takes them further than just copying what they see. Me, now a “senior citizen” and on the down hill slope ;-) , find a lot of joy in training the new generation of Martial Artists as well as getting exercise and challenges when sparring with a young, fast, strong student. That fosters my humility :-)

"Legit and I've known him for 40+ years (he's my father). Started training at age 46 and is wrestling 20 year olds still today every week, at age 71. An inspiration for the rest of us! "
Thanks Johan! Struggling with the 20 years old is tough, sparring with you is worse (but a pleasure).
