"BB must be from JD Shelley or otherwise, it's one year early based on the earliest date where Shelley could had promoted Munoz to BB (and when Munoz then could promote others to BB at earliest). Jacaré lineages (at least mine) also are more rather than less restrictive with degree required to promote BB:s (3:rd rather than 2:nd degree), so as the promotion history is stated now, I must unfortunately place a down vote. But if everything is cleared up and checks out, I'll more than gladly change it to an up vote, as I'm "lineage cousin" with your instructor."
Well November 24, 2015 is the day Hector was also promoted to 2nd. If memory serves me correctly JD was standing off to the right on this picture. Not much else I can say if you feel Hector needed to be a third. Hector and JD did not feel that way at the time of this picture. As all of those with me were Hector’s black belts.

If you continue to feel this way please remember to come back in November to up vote me. Thank you ahead of time for doing

Hector wasn't (couldn't have been) promoted by Shelley then? Just make sure all info is correct and I'll up vote you right away!

Yes sir, I guarantee you JD Shelley put the stripes on his black belt that you see in the picture. I was there and witness it. Was also there for Jd to promote hector each time except this last time to 4th.

I'm referring to Hector's promotion from brown to black, which couldn't (shouldn't) be from Shelley. Who promoted Hector to BB and when?
1 year(s) ago
JD Shelley promoted Hector to black. I do not know the year as I did not know hector at this time. But I know JD Shelley recently promoted him to 4th as well so at least 14 years ago. To my knowledge Hector has only ever trained under JD Shelley. Hector is one of the first black belts in Corpus Christi and had trained under Jd Shelley in DFW from my understanding. A quick internet search provides the following “ Hector Munoz received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the tutelage of JD Shelley at NDBJJ. Following his promotion, he established the Full Contact Fight Academy in Corpus Christi”. I will send out some texts in attempt to find the year.

Here is what I know thus far. JD promoted Hector prior to 2008. I met Hector in 2008 although did not begin training under him as of yet. I do know JD promoted coy clements to black belt as well in mid 2009. Would be a lot of black belts disputed in Texas if this criteria is followed strictly. I appreciate your depth of verification and you do what you feel is right, but it clear Jd did not agree with being a third degree before promoting black belts.

All of the dates I placed are correct. JD Shelley promoted Hector Munoz to BB in 2008. So I know what to tell Jd and Hector let me summarize; you feel Hector’s BB is invalid because JD was not a proper BB to promote H core at the time and thus Hector should not have them been able to promote me since he was not really a BB? If things not correct thinking please correct my thinking and/or remove the negative votes and/or up vote my verification. Thank you very much for your time and clarification ahead of time.

Haven't yet found evidence of Munoz promoted to BB, but Shelley is on Beltchecker and would be able to confirm. In either case, should be no earlier than October 26 in 2010. With confirmation from Shelley and that he also confirms a 2:nd degree BB for Munoz +6 years from that point in time, you have my up vote. You can also, if Shelley accepts and confirms on your profile, change promotion history to show Munoz as junior co-promoter, with Shelley as the senior BB promoting on nov 24 in 2015. That also works and would take away any need to look further into Munoz's BB promotion date (and if that means he was at most a 1:st degree BB in 2015), as he's currently not on Beltchecker in either case.

Let me point out a perspective here as a 1st generation Texas Black Belt. First, ibjjf was not established until 1996. As many of our now master coaches came to the Us with goals of establishing the art here, IbJJF had not gained any acceptance as the governing or accreditation body of Jiu Jitsu. It had still not yet seen wide proliferation. It would not be until 2012 that an “amended” promotional guidelines be set and widely disseminated. Now, with respect, I can totally understand the need to verify and validate everyone. But it should also be noted that not every single legitimate black belt within the community recognizes or embraces IBJJF. Even some of the more esteemed progenitors refuse to accept or recognize it as the governing body. It would seem naive and nonsensical to me for one to assume that everyone adheres to the same perspective as to who calls the shots. Especially given the fact that so many american black belts of my generation and before were promoted by literal GOATS of our art like Master Jacare Cavalcanti (Respect on his name). Many of those americans in the early 2000’s were promoted to black belts well before there would need to be any consideration for them obtaining degrees further down the line. I can personally say that noone in Texas from the early 2000’s had any idea of rules or a handbook, or guidelines for promotions. I can totally understand someone whom received black in the 2012 and after years assuming IBJJF Is the end all be all, because they have now gained wide acceptance as the government for jiu jitsu, but back when i was promoted, my first thought was “who is ibjjf?” The bottom line is Master Jacare (respect) promoted my coach at his own hand in Atlanta. My coach then promoted a cadre of black belts in the years well before ibjjf was noteworthy. If anyone feels those guys are somehow illegitimate after almost 2 decades of contributions to Texas Bjj an what many now see as the MECCA for the sport, then i have nothing else to say to them other than one word, conjecture . Sorry but i mean the preceding with utmost respect.
