Bio
Started jiu-jitsu in 2001 with Alliance Helsinki after training in boxing since 1992 and kickboxing and Hokutoryu style jiu-jitsu for some years.
Got my blue belt from Lucio Linhares the regular way, but moved away to Germany and trained BJJ and Luta livre (Dortmund and Mülheim) there for a year around 2007 - 2008. Got my purple belt from Alliance in 2010, but moved away to Mikkeli and eventually got my brown and black belts from Brasa in 2014 and 2017 by never having a break unless due to an injury or sickness.
Then lived some years in Vilnius Lithuania, regularly taught classes at A-force gym where I was one of the local founders, before moving back to Mikkeli Finland to continue my journey. Over 30 years of martial arts.
If you want a vote from me, please have some sort of actual live sparring or competition footage against people you consider peers, as I want to verify person based on their technical level, not by certificates. I have loads of video's on my profile too.

"Bruno got his own BB in 2016, so wasn't legit to promote anyone else to BB just 1 year 1 month later (source: https://ajptour.com/en/profile/19355). If someone else was the actual promoting instructor, you need to change your promotion history plus add actual evidence (the evidence for the promotion from brown to black is the most important)."
If a less than 2:nd degree BB believes you earned a rank, they really should ask a 2:nd degree BB or higher to promote you or they'll put you in a spot where you have a rank which won't be universally recognised. Have you met and trained with Eduardo or Demian? Are you sure they are not the actual promoting instructors, letting their students represent them at the promotion?
2 year(s) ago
Juuso and Jyri are both 3rd degree black belts, I've rolled with them and their students, and they've seen me compete. I think their opinion is more relevant than Demian's, who I rolled with only as a blue belt. Teemu and Bruno had permission from above to promote me.
2 year(s) ago
If we adher to the established promotion standards in BJJ, Eduardo or Demian can't give permission to a 0:th or 1:st degree to promote anyone to BB. They can however let a 0:th or 1:st degree BB lead a cermony in which they are the formal promoting instructor while not physically present. You have a lot of very legit Finnish BB:s with 2:nd degree BB or higher though, so you really should see if you can get the formal BB promotion from one of them, if Eduardo or Demian won't agree to be the formal promoting instructor for 2017.

I think it's a good question, am I more valid because of a certificate given by someone who never rolled with me, or because known people acknowledge my skill based on training with me? Based on video's on my profile, do you think I have skills of a black belt?
2 year(s) ago
For me, it's the same thing as you being really good at e.g. programming and claiming to have a university degree. You can still have great skills but it does make a difference on you having a university degree or not if you have evidence of it, even it it's e.g. a diploma signed by someone who only indirectly knows of your skills. Another really skilled bachelor degree graduate can tell me you're really good at programming, while not able to issue a formal university diploma that will be widely recognised. On Beltchecker, I check your belt credentials, not your skills.

Bruno Reale (black belt under Eduardo Santoro de Camargo) and Teemu Matilainen (black belt under Demian Maia since 15.3.2014) gave me my black belt under Brasa in August 2017, which I accepted. They believe I've earned my rank, as well as many people here who I've trained with.
2 year(s) ago
I don't think you are making a good comparison. I can surely ask if I was promoted by them on behalf of someone else, does that bring more validity to my belt in your opinion? Do I understand right, your verifications here are not based on observed skill, but on credentials??
2 year(s) ago
Well, Finnish BJJ federation recognizes my 2nd degree black belt and Rodrigo "Comprido" Medeiros is the technical promoting instructor.
2 year(s) ago
Yes, if you were promoted by Comprido or another legit 2:nd degree or higher BB in 2017 and you provide evidence and change the promotion history to reflect it, that would validify your BB promotion as far as I am concerned (the Finnish BJJ federation reasoned similarly, if you're registered as a BB under Comprido there?). There are a lot of people who are very skilled in grappling without being a BJJ BB, so good skills is not the same as BJJ BB. Although the BJJ Globetrotters council of travelling black belts have ocassionally made promotions based on skills, which I have upvoted as they're based on promotions from 2:nd degree or higher BB:s in conjunction.
2 year(s) ago
Comprido has accepted to sign my promotions, I don't wish to force people to revote just to satisfy your punctuality. If you still wish to dispute my rank, let's just agree to disagree.
2 year(s) ago
I guess he signed as a promoter himself then and in either case, even well known instructors can't change by themselves that 2:nd degree promoting instructor is the prevalent standard. You do as you want, but with your skills, I'm sure you could get your promotion history legit in no time and later degrees only matter when you promote students yourself. If you do so without first getting the formalities in order, they'll unfortunately be put in the spot of not having universally recognised BB:s too.

I'm not quite following you, what do you think I should do for more credibility?
2 year(s) ago
Credibility for BB level skills, you already have as far as I can tell. But I think you'd need a formal promotion to 0:th degree BB with either Eduardo, Demian, Comprido or Jyri as promoting instructor. Plus of course evidence, if it should be possible to check the promotion on Beltchecker (but evidence can be that you write in the promotion history that the promoting instructor sends his regards that the validity of the promotion an invitation can be checked through contacting him directly through a reliable official way of contact). Personally, I don't mind if the formalities of a promotion is sorted out within a team with preserved promotion date even if the formal promoting instructor is switched, which would then validate your current degree.

With all due respect, I must disagree with this downvote. If you award a belt, a stripe or anything, you accept the past as well. I think the whole point of belt checker is to validate the skills by the community of practitioners, as Jiu-Jitsu is not all IBJJF. And even i their history, there have been countless promotions to black belt by zero degree black belts, if that would be a valid point we could argue who promoted the original Gracies to black belt. There’s plenty enough to conclude Jari is as legit as it gets.
